St Paul’s win back-to-back SAS College Rugby League Championship title​

St Paul’s College have claimed the Championship title for the second straight year, edging out season debutants Wesley College 23-10 to win the SAS College Rugby League grand final on Wednesday night.

It was straight out the gates for St Paul's College with back to back sets to start the game.

Prop Sione Ngahe opened the score, storming over the line and under the sticks with standoff Dylan Tavita adding the extras for an early 6-0 lead.

St Paul's dodged a bullet when Wesley's standoff Adam Pompey kicked the ball high before Sione Hafoka crossed over, only to be denied points with a knock on.

That counted for little in the end with Wesley shifting the ball quickly to the left and an opening try to wing Saia Latu.

With the conversion flying wide, St Paul's led 6-4.

Further St Paul's tries to wing Duken Williams and hard-working fullback Star Toa took the lead out to 14-4.

Tavita added the extras to give his side a 16-4 lead at the break.

While St Paul's held a points advantage coming into the second stanza, Wesley have history of showing up in the second half and producing better efforts.

It took 15 minutes before points were scored. Wesley accelerated down field before hooker Larenz Tupaea crashed over from dummy half.

Pompey converted to get up 16-10.

But St Paul's hit back with an offload from prop Zephaniah Aerenga and a shift to the right.

Fullback Star Toa proved just why he's worthy of being named in the 1st XIII team of the year, storming through the pack to fall just short of the line before Tavita reached to extend their lead 20-10.

Eventually it told, putting the game beyond doubt with another conversion and drop goal to Tavita winning 23-10.

The victory was met by a loud applause from the full house of travelling fans at Mt Smart Stadium #2.

St Paul's coach Junior Fiu said he was incredibly proud of his team's efforts and their undefeated season.

"I'm really proud of the boys and their performance tonight," he said.

"They had camp in March and they've worked really hard to defend this title."

But Fiu admits it hasn't been all about the physical training, with education being a major key to making the team.

"Obviously the physical training is important, but they had to work their butts off at school if they wanted to make the team.

"Education was always a priority before taking the field," he said.

The rugby league season isn't over for the central Auckland school who now shift their focus on playing in the NZRL Secondary Schools tournament later this month.

A last-minute penalty rescued a draw for the Auckland Maori U20 against Toa Samoa Invitational U20, in the curtain-raiser at the 2018 Upright Access Mann Cup.

Samoa opened the scoring at Mt Smart Stadium on six minutes, via powerful prop forward Lene Neemia, but found themselves down 16-6 at the break as the local side struck three times, through fleet-footed half Taane Paki, centre Iloa Ma’afu-Roberts and forward Isaiah Vagana.

Three minutes into the second period the Samoans had a golden chance to claw their way back, after winger Setu Tu burst 70 metres down field, but they couldn’t execute and the gap remained 10 at the final 20 minutes approached.

At that point Toa captain Dylan Tavita took matters into his own hands, stepping his way through for a try, although it was quickly cancelled out by Casey Smith’s four-pointer at the other end.

Tries to Johnny Falelua-Malio and Jachim Tumu-Makara – both of which were converted by Tavita – gave the Samoans a 24-22 lead, which they looked set to win the game on, before a penalty with a minute left gifted Smith with a kick in front of the posts to tie the game.

AUCKLAND VULCANS & COUNTIES MANUKAU STINGRAYS LOOKING TO CLAIM NATIONAL MEN’S PREMIERSHIP​

The NZRL Men’s National Premiership finals take place today 2:00 pm at Pukekohe’s Navigation Homes Stadium, between the Auckland Vulcans and Counties Manukau Stingrays.

The Auckland Vulcans enter the final, contending to claim their first National Premiership title, having earned promotion after winning the 2022 Men’s Championship. Counties Manukau will play in their first Premiership final since 2020, when they narrowly lost to the Akarana Falcons. Both teams enter the final unbeaten and will feature National Championship and Premiership veterans, alongside young talent in their debut men’s representative seasons.

Most notably for the Vulcans, prominent former Junior Warriors Dylan Tavita and Francis Leger will steer the side as they have skillfully done throughout the team’s campaign. Young Warriors SG Ball and NSW Cup players Sefanaia Cowley-Lupo and Makaia Tafua have had stellar performances for the Vulcans thus far and are ones to keep an eye out for.

For the opposing Singrays outfit, their formidable forward pack is bolstered by hardy ball-runners, including brothers Manu and Robert-Alan Fatialofa. The former Cook Island International Reece Joyce will take his position at halfback, while young up-and-comer, Warriors SG Ball player Phranklyn Mano-le-Mamea also laces up for the Counties side.

The Premiership final will be hotly contested as Counties secured their spot in the match-up by beating out the 2022 champions the Akarana Falcons last week. They will look to take that momentum into this contest against an experienced and talented Vulcans side.

The Canterbury Bulls and Waikato men will also play at Navigation Homes Stadium at 12:00 pm in a relegation match to determine who will move into the National Championship for 2024.

Dylan Tavita comes in at halfback for the unavailable Paul Turner for the Vodafone Junior Warriors’ sixth-round NYC clash against the Parramatta Eels at Mount Smart Stadium today (1.45pm kick-off).

Turner (17) was originally named to make his NYC debut but has been ruled out.
