Q & A with Kiwi Fern Annetta-Claudia Nuuausala

Annetta-Claudia Nu'uausala 5.png

Born & raised in South Auckland alongside my 12 siblings. Dad being Solomon Islander/Samoan & mum Chinese/ Samoan. I am the youngest of 13 - 6 boys, 7 girls. My partner has played for Otara mens side the last 9-10 years.

What was it like for you growing up in Otara?
I spent the first 7 years of my life in Mangere then we had moved to Otara in 2002. There was and still is so much criticism about Otara, however, there is also so much good that happens within our society. Just to name a few, there a community projects such as youth development, neighbourhood support where people within our own community gather to help feed those less fortunate, physical activity & healthy eating programs. This makes me so proud to be from Otara!

Where did you start and how you got to where you are today?
First league club was Otara scorpions in 2013 although I had been playing in high school too. The year after, I had moved onto another club as there were uncertainties of the Otara women’s team returning. From there, I started to develop new skills, and gained a lot more knowledge of the game! A lot of sacrifices had to be made in order for me to make the pinnacle of women’s rugby league. One of those sacrifices was leaving my friends to pursue my dream as a Kiwi Fern & thankfully enough, an NRLW player.

What clubs did you play before making the NRLW?
2013 – Otara
2014-2015 – Mangere East
2016-2017 – Marist
2018-2019 – Richmond
I had to move around in order for me to be able to grow. With the women’s game also growing, I needed to join a team that would challenge me & benefit my footy. I have now found that with Richmond but I am hoping that Otara put a team together so we can bring more success to the hood!

What is your message for our future who aspire to be where you are today?
Get comfortable being uncomfortable & never settle for less. You’ll be surprised where the journey takes you!

You’re journey in the game? Where have you played before?
I debuted for the Kiwi Ferns in 2016 as a second rower, got into a relationship and all of a sudden, I'm a prop. Went to the World Cup in 2017, played Test matches from 2016-2019. I was also a part of the first NRLW Warriors squad in 2018-2019 but was medically ruled out in 2020.
How excited are you to be a part of the first ever NRLW side for the Newcastle Knights?
So so excited! The Club has been so welcoming since I've arrived. I can not wait to lace up with the ladies and show everyone what we have got!
What’s your hopes and expectations for the season ahead?
To win. No pressure…
What are you most looking forward to for the season?
Building lifelong friendships.
Favourite movie?
Nacho Libre.

Best joke?
Unfortunately, I’m not as funny as Casey (Bromilow)...
Where did you grow up?
South Auckland, Otara to be exact.
Who is most important to you?
My family.
Greatest on-field moment?
Playing at home for the Warriors in 2019 in front of all my family and friends.
Any sporting heroes?
My brother – Frank. He created a pathway for us younger ones and opened our eyes up to opportunities outside of what we were used to. I’m glad I followed in his footsteps because I’ve found something that I’m passionate about. Even better, he now resides in Newcastle so I have a part of home here with me.

Broncos star Annetta-Claudia Nu'uausala facing lengthy suspension after wild NRLW brawl

Alyssa Bone
July 27, 2024 - 5.36pm

Broncos star Annetta-Claudia Nu'uausala is facing a four match ban after she escaped lucky to only be binned for an ugly brawl late in their NRLW season-opening loss to the Eels.

Three players were cited for their role in the incident on the charge sheet, with the Broncos set to be without their prop for half the season - given Nu'uausala accepts the early plea deal. If the Broncos opt to challenge the decision, Nu'uausala could face six weeks on the sidelines.

Kennedy Cherrington and Tazmin Rapana were charged with grade one contrary conduct and are facing a one-game ban, although both are eligible to opt for a monetary penalty of $400.

The melee was sparked by a head-high contact and hip drop tackle by Nu'uausala on Rueben Cherrington who was left laying on the turf.

Cherrington's sister Kennedy then rushed in and pushed the Broncos front rower out of the ruck, which caused tempers to flare.

"She's pushed her," Ruan Sims said on Nine.

A video replay showed Nu'uausala laid a punch on the Eels lock before engaging in some more push and shove, before teammates came to separate the pair.

"She might be spending some time on the line," Sims said.

"She's let one rip right on the chin of Kennedy Cherrington. Players came running in from everywhere after that," Drury Forbes called.

The incident spilled throughout both teams with Abbi Church's attempt to settle the dispute resulting in the Eels star becoming the next prime target for Nu'uausala.

Match officials acted quickly with Cherrington immediately given her marching orders for her involvement.

In a decision which left Nine's commentary team surprised, Nu'uausala escaped a sin bin and was solely placed on report for the hip drop tackle, with no mention on the punch made during the on field decision.

"She's sent not for the punch but for the hip drop?" Phil Gould asked.

"There is high contact with the head and then there is a reaction off the back of it," replied Sims.

"The referee is obviously trying to take some heat out of the game there, but I thought it was Brianna Clark with the high contact."

Earlier, the Eels proved they are ready to turnaround their wooden spoon season as they responded to an early try by Julia Robinson with back-to-back four-pointers.

Robinson's efforts saw the Broncos become the first NRLW team to score 150 tries.

Monique Donovan was next over for the visitors before Kennedy Cherrington found the line in the 59th minute.
