It is an idea I have heard discussed on podcasts a lot.
Btw who knew the first Science fiction writer was Syrian and from the second century (the Roman Empire no less).
This idea about Aliens reminds me of a comment someone made in the Trump thread about the human race needing a unifier like the arrival of Aliens. My first thought was, perhaps we are building the Aliens right now, and that will be the unifier of humanity (hopefully for positive reasons and not in a resistance against the machines kinda way).
The latest interstellar object is getting a bit of attention.

I opened Facebook, which I hate doing because it's overrun with AI and kremlin bots, and that article came up in my feed ironically. Must have joined that group years ago.
We could be a cul de sac in evolution that evolves to create AI then goes extinct. Gotta look on the bright side though Sup, we might not be.
Big weekend of viewing coming up, Pacific Cup, Ashes test, No Kings marches for our American cuzzies, liberals and conservatives coming together against the big club we're not in. Could be a trap though, it's a powder keg over there.

I cannot believe that people think we won't cope with not having to work. Wot a load of bollocks. If there is an excess and comfort, food and shelter, people will happily find other meaning, shit there is a whole planet to explore, a solar system, a galaxy and so forth.
Plenty of folk will enjoy learning interesting shit, not for a job or a degree, but because they like to know shit.
And there will be the doers, doing shit, you just wont have to listen to some wanker telling you your performance appraisal is on this Wednesday.
Just have to hope the tech bros have our best interests in mind and not the Orwellian dystopia that Bowie warned us of on Diamond Dogs. On that subject, why does Peter Thiel look like he's made of cheese?

Thing is though, if this stuff really goes all the way and we end up with a super intelligence, the tech bros will have no say in it.
Kind of like the days when the interweb came along, telephone companies used to charge you your left nut to communicate with people in other countries.
There was talk that they (the telecoms) would monetize the Interweb so we would still get charged for voice calls with people per call....the technology itself surpassed that kind of control.
I sense if we are gonna be ok, we just need to survive that envelop you speak of where the tech bros are still in charge, get through that without them influencing the machines to kill us and the machines will take over and human corruption will have no relevance.
