General 2006-2008 NZ Warriors Jerseys and Merchandise

2006 home jersey 1.jpg

2006 ushered in a completely new jersey design unlike anything the NRL had ever seen. The jersey was sleek and minimalist in style using a new template that saw the boxed shoulder designs of past year replaced by a more ergonomic angled cut.

These jerseys sold well and are widely available on secondary markets.

As far as players jerseys went they were essentially the exact same of the retail versions but had a heat pressed number on the back. Gone from the previous year was the pronounced players cut taper.

The 2006 away jersey didn't sell as much as the home jersey but can still be found easily on secondary markets although many are in poor condition due to the light colour of the jersey.

2006 NZ Warriors Awen Guttenbeil Testimonial Jersey

2006 Awen Testimonial jersey 1.jpg

Made in honour of Awen playing 10 seasons for the club and worn in his 11th and final season at the Warriors. The design reflected Awen's Maori and Tongan heritage.

The actual match worn jerseys were handed out by inaugural captain and Warrior #1, Dean Bell on game day. A game that Awen would have missed due to injury if it weren't for the fact that it was his testimonial game. Heavily strapped up he made the field in heavy rain to help the team edge past the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks 12-10 at Mt Smart Stadium during their Round 22 clash.

Most of the match worn jerseys were auctioned at Awen's testimonial lunch which was organised by Sir Peter Leitch and held at the Ellerslie Convention Centre on 20 July with over $100,000 raised for various charities. MCs included Neil Waka of 3 News fame and comedian Mike King.

Awen actually had to fund the purchase of the jerseys himself as any involvement from the club or Puma would mean it counted as part of the salary cap. 54 jerseys were made in total.

A few facts about this jersey. The first and to date the only player given a testimonial jersey. First jersey in the clubs history that featured sublimated players numbers. First club jersey that incorporated Maori and Island designs.

Essentially the same jersey from the previous season with 3 key differences. The Vodafone logo was updated to the new version, Lion Red League was changed to Lion Red Beer on the sleeves and Nissan Forklift was removed from the lower back sponsor spot.

Players jerseys were simply replica jerseys with a large sublimated number.

Quite often its mistakenly referred to as the Auckland Rugby League Centennial jersey. Problem is the ARL was founded in 1909.

This jersey was actually made to mark 30 years since the Auckland team of 1977 beat Australia, Great Britain and France all in the space of just 20 days at Carlaw Park.

Below is an excerpt from an article before the 40th Anniversary held at Mt Smart and hosted by the Warriors.

Under the guidance of master coach Bill Sorensen, the Aucklanders delivered wins over Australia on June 1 (19-15), Great Britain on June 14 (14-10) and France on June 21 (17-0).

The achievement was all the more exceptional because it contrasted with the Kiwis’ uninspiring efforts in their World Championship matches against the visiting teams just days earlier with many of the Auckland players backing up from those Test matches.

After the Kiwis had lost 12-27 to Australia at Carlaw Park on May 29, Auckland – with five players backing up from the Test – provided thrills aplenty in beating the Kangaroos 19-15 on the same ground three days later.

On June 12, the Kiwis were abject in a 12-30 defeat by Great Britain in Christchurch but seven of the Kiwi side then fronted and excelled 48 hours later to help Auckland beat the Brits 14-10 at the beloved Carlaw Park.

And while the New Zealand side was unconvincing in a 28-20 win against France on June 19, seven Kiwis then helped Auckland complete the clean sweep with their 17-0 victory over the French.

In all 19 players were used by Sorensen in Auckland’s campaign with 14 of them either Kiwis already or destined to wear the black and white jersey. Five of them captained the Kiwis and five of them were inducted as Legends of League by the NZRL – Dennis Williams, Mark Graham, Kurt Sorensen, Olsen Filipaina and Bill Sorensen – while others who would have long Kiwi and professional careers were Fred Ah Kuoi, Dane O’Hara and Gary Kemble.

The 1977 team was previously honoured by the Vodafone Warriors in 2007, marking the 30th anniversary with a special replica strip the Vodafone Warriors wore in their last home match of the season against Manly. On a sensational day – with 12 1977 veterans in attendance – the Vodafone Warriors beat Manly 36-14 in front of 25,070 fans (the ground was sold out two days earlier).

Puma's jersey was taken straight from the 1977 jersey and was a faithful reproduction of the original from the colour and shade to the chevron detail.

Originally there was only meant to be a limited run of 300 made and offered for sale but due to the huge amount of public demand Puma made at least one more run.

Heres the team list from the only game they played in this jersey should you be lucky enough to get a players jersey...

1. Wade McKINNON
2. Michael CROCKETT
3. Jerome ROPATI
4. Simon MANNERING
5. Manu VATUVEI
6. Michael WITT
7. Grant ROVELLI
8. Sam RAPIRA
9. Nathan FIEN
10. Steve PRICE (c)
11. Ruben WIKI
12. Logan SWANN
13. Micheal LUCK
14. George GATIS
15. Evarn TUIMAVAVE
16. Epalahame LAUAKI
17. Wairangi KOOPU

2007 NZ Warriors Development Home Jersey

2007 development jersey 1.jpg

In preparation of the Warriors entering a team in the upcoming U20s National Youth Competition they formed a team of aspiring juniors in 2007 who toured the country playing games against Bartercard Cup teams and culminating in a game at Mt Smart against the Bartercard Cup All Stars selection team.

The squad was officially known as the NZ Warriors Allied Workforce Elite Development Team and had the likes of Russel Packer, Aaron Pawley, Jody Henry, Kevin Locke, Sione Lousi and Ben Matulino.

Unfortunately there is very little information about the team and as yet there is no match photos or video available.

From training photos it looks like the jerseys were worn by the NRL team as training jerseys.

These jerseys are not common at all and I have seen maybe 4 of both versions in total over the years. Despite its rarity they do not sell for much money as most collectors are only after NRL jerseys...

2007 NZ Warriors Training Black Jersey

2007 black training jersey.jpg

Released as a team issued jersey only this set was made in black and grey for opposed training sessions.

There is very little information on these jerseys apart from photos online showing them being worn by players and despite there being at least a small run (no idea on what that amounts to. You would think at least 15-20 minimum) of these jerseys out there almost none have ever surfaced in fact the only know photos are from Warriors training sessions in 2007.

2008 NZ Warriors Home Jersey

2008 home jersey 1.jpg

2008 was the Centennial year for Australian Rugby Leagues domestic competition. All teams jerseys across the NRL featured a special Centennial badge.

Centenary_of_rugby_league_1908-2008.png

The centennial badge was the only change on the front of the 2008 home jersey while there was a slight facelift to the Loadlift logo.

This jersey sold fairly well and is can be found easily on secondary markets.

Players jerseys had no noticeable difference from replicas apart from the sublimated number on the back...

This jersey for some reason can be difficult to get on secondary markets. It's not rare just not as widely available as the home jersey.

2008 NZ Warriors Heritage Jersey

2008 heritage jersey 1.jpg

As part of the NRL centennial all clubs were to make a heritage jersey.

The Warriors went with a remake of the 2000 away jersey.

The jersey was only worn once during the Round 6 clash against the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville. The jerseys were then worn extensively during training sessions throughout the 2008 season.

The replica jersey is common enough but player issue and match worn jerseys are rare.

Started by the NRL in 2008 the new Toyota Cup competition succeeded the Jersey Flegg U19.

The U20 jersey mirrored the NRL jersey template. Differences between the NRL and U20 wre the U20 badge, sleeve sponsor and lower back sponsor.

This jersey was actually first worn by the Junior Warriors vs Auckland Selection on February 10th as a warm up game.

The U20 jersey mirrored the NRL jersey template. The only difference between the home and away was the sleeve sponsor where Toyota was used instead of Allied Workforce. This would be a common occurance with Warriors U20s jerseys throughout their inclusion in the U20 competition.

Much like the 2007 training jerseys these were released as a team issued jersey only this set was made in black and grey for opposed training sessions. The key differences are the slightly different sleeve sponsor and the addition of a Puma/NRL centennial logo patch on the front bottom of the jersey.

There is very little information on these jerseys apart from photos online showing them being worn by players and despite there being at least a small run (no idea on what that amounts to. You would think at least 15-20 minimum) of these jerseys out there almost none have ever surfaced.
