I think we're still quite far off what's happening in the states but definitely not the utopian country we once thought we were.

If theres any political violence here I could see if coming from the far left or far right deeply invested in international culture war topics. The influence of that is quite insidious... not naming names.

I'm not so sure we are that far off to be honest but i agree with the rest of your post.

I was going to add to my previous post that we do have a rather large majority of people in the country that are relatively centerist - either slightly left or slightly right - which is keeping us on a level at the moment. But we are heading the way of partisan politics, much like other areas of the world, and the more the center are divided further to the left and right the worse we will be. It's a change that is gathering momentum and it has done so fairly rapidly elsewhere. We shouldn't be surprised to see it happening here and likely in the next 6 - 10 years I would think if not sooner.

Some countries might judge us like we judge the Americans because we eat meat or even pork - living animals. Or allow abortions. Or cut down trees (murderers!)

The biggest issue for America is that the cat is out of the bag now. The horse has bolted. Even if you got a vast majority of support across the country, there are so many guns already in circulation and to many borders to guard against them being imported illegally that I doubt it would make a difference.

That's why I am glad our laws are tight and we are isolated geographically. Once you loosen things like gun laws here, it takes so long to remove them again.

If gun laws were more relaxed there in Victoria would we be talking about a bigger problem rather than machettes? If gun laws were tighter in the US would we have less overall murders but a larger number of knife related ones?

It’s not only our world view, but a viewed shared by many Americans too. According to this 61% of Americans support stricter measures around guns, the problem is they have a very powerful lobbying group behind them

Yes. yes. But all that does is conclusively prove it’s not the weapon.

Despite being proficient in a LOT of firearms, pistols, bolt actions, semi, shotguns, machines guns, I see them as a tool and l actually think there should be more restrictions on weapons in the US.
