Guilty of this with Latham in the past but was super impressed last night watching him
Reckon this kinda unfortunately shows that Southee may have been out of his depth as captain, but somehow everything is clicking with this group on tour, of India so weirdly!

100 more runs would be awesome, 150 the ultimate I think. India will come hard today.

Imagine if Patel got the same opportunities as Santner.
Yeah, Santner has been fantastic in the first innings but he has been largely ineffective on home soil.
His batting is handy but to only give Patel 3 Test matches at home is criminal.
Granted he took zero wickets in those matches surely we should’ve taken a gamble and played him in several Tests, what did we have to lose against the plus side of Patel developing.

This has been about the only international cricket this team hasn't come in cold for in 12 months or more, including the home season.

If that Afghanistan game hadn't been rained off they might have blown off the cobwebs and had a different result in Sri Lanka. May even be looking good for the WTC too.

Most important though is the change in mindset for this series. Positive cricket, it went away for a while.

I'd argue that what usually makes Santner successful in white ball cricket, but unsuccessful in tests is exactly what has made his outing here so good.

His strength is his accuracy, height and variation in speed. Without the revolutions on the ball, this makes him easy to see out and milk in test cricket. Here though the pitch is creating a huge amount of natural variation for Santner's accuracy and height. The same ball is pitching in the same place, but doing different things...consistently. It is a total lottery for the batsmen. He looked good a couple of years ago in the UAE for the same reason, but didn't have the luck to go with it.

Great knowledge and reasoning

In the white ball format he also has the advantage of scoring pressure and batsman having to create against his accuracy which has made him such a good bowler in limited overs, particularly in the t20 arena . In tests he isn't what you would call a threatening bowler unless he gets conditions like this test that help. Will be intriguing to see how the indians approach this fourth innings chase.
