NRL NRL 2025 General Recruitment Thread

Is Drinkwater still on the market? Get him and doesn’t matter where Luke plays lol

Do we know where Harry Inch is looking at playing yet?

If he's not going to be a full back, I wonder if using Roger's 600k and Berry's 400k to pick up Drinky for $800k and a 2-300k journeyman for 2027, given we now have AKP and a few young guys pushing for that wing spot.

This team is going to look so different in 2027

Wonder if the r360 players are requesting early releases as a way to avoid their agents from getting the 10 year ban. If they arent an nrl player when they sign for r360, surely the ban on their agents doesnt have a leg to stand on.

That's what I've been assuming. NAS, Paps and Lomax walking away from massive deals because they want to reassess life isn't a normal occurrence.

Papenhuyzen getting released from the Storm to figure out what he wants to do with his career after losing two Grand Finals was a bit stange. But, you could kind of believe it the way the journalists were saying "he's a bit of a deep thinker Paps".

NAS getting released where typically you'd expect a bit more negotiations on payout but instead it looks like the Storm don't have that salary on their books.

Now Lomax after one year with the Eels.

That is three of the names most commonly linked to R360. There is definitley some thinking behind this. Likely guided by R360 and their managers.

There is speculation there will be announcements regarding R360 soon. Can see that happening now with some familiar names announced.

Is R360 a genuine threat? Who knows if it’s real or if it’s a “cornflakes box” competition as ARL chairman Peter V’landys put it recently.

But the reality is that two of the game’s best players in Zac Lomax and Ryan Papenhuyzen have left the NRL with time remaining on their contracts.

Even if they aren’t R360 bound, has the prospect of that competition planted enough of a seed for some of the game’s best to start considering a move?

And that’s even before we get to the fact that Payne Haas is weighing up a payday which could see him pocket $3 million a season.

This move hasn’t come as a surprise to the Eels. Word of a post-game conversation between Lomax and fellow heavily-linked R360 prospect Roger Tuivasa-Sheck quickly made its way back to the Eels after Parramatta took on the Warriors in their round 26 clash in Auckland.

Lomax apparently made a beeline for Tuivasa-Sheck post-game where he wanted to pick the veteran back’s brain about a potential code switch despite the pair rarely crossing paths off the field.

Conversations also happened as far back as Origin camp.

In Lomax’s defence, he floated the prospect of joining R360 with the club months ago despite having three years left on his four-year contract worth about $700,000 a season.

Lomax had informally spoken about an immediate release with Eels officials in recent weeks.

That stepped up last week ahead of Lomax being required to return to pre-season training on Monday.

It turned into a formal release on Sunday night. While details surrounding the exit are yet to be fully revealed, the Eels won’t allow Lomax to play against them until his original four-year contract expires at the end of 2028 – although the NRL are threatening 10 year bans for R360 defectors. There has also been a suggestion of a release fee. Privately, Parramatta don’t know where Lomax will play. But the talk of R360 looms large.

Some at the Eels had been warned against signing Lomax given the way he exited the Dragons, but his form last year was so good they thought they had a match winner on a long-term deal.

He gave Parramatta good service but the reality is that it lasted just 19 games.

For the Eels, they have cleared significant money out of their cap. Lomax was signed as a centre under former coach Brad Arthur and new coach Jason Ryles was willing to give him a crack at his preferred spot.

But Ryles soon followed Shane Flanagan’s path from last season and realised Lomax was one of the game’s best wingers.

It is why Lomax made his Australian and NSW debut despite a reluctance to play on the flank at the Dragons. He didn’t play another game for Parramatta at centre after round five.

Parramatta’s interest in former Storm big man Nelson Asofa-Solomona is genuine and now they have some money to pursue the Kiwis prop.

They still have Ryan Matterson on their books with the one-time NSW forward due to return in a week for pre-season training.

As for the NRL? Well R360 apparently wants the players they have signed to start making formal announcements within weeks.

It could leave the NRL with the worst kind of Christmas present especially if Haas finds a big pay cheque under his tree.

I'd be surprised if NAS signs anywhere (NRL). This all looks to be lining up for R360 to have players to name when they make an announcement on the competition going ahead.

The questions would be:

How many from the NRL?
See how badly the competition would be hit.

How many union players?
It is supposed to be a union competition. The standard of play would be a lot better with players who are familiar with the sport.

We have gone from players not wanting to leave money on the table to players asking to be released. I wouldn't be surprised if they are getting signing bonuses that match the ammount they left behind.

He won’t cope with cauliflower ears. Think he’s one that does have genuine options, I think he’d make a handy boxer

To be fair though, he’s 30 next year and would doubt that he would return to the NRL after his stint at R360. Could see him playing 1 more season next year and then his NRL career is done

I reckon the majority of the forwards the competition gets will largely be from union. I can’t see many league players interested in the scrummaging side of the game if it’s union they’re playing? Money would of course twist a few arms

Interesting the only news we've heard from the union side is the international rugby unions getting together to try and stop r360 from being credible. No signings yet.

The comp can’t be entirely made up of ex nrl players, so where else? Haven’t heard of any super league players either? Plenty of union players go to Europe or Japan for the big money, perhaps this will be direct competition for that?

Thought this was an interesting discussion regarding Clinton Schifcofske who manages some players linked. Would be interesting regarding Bruce Sharrock in regards to RTS with him coming off contract and Sharrock managing union players too I think?
