Intervention Essay - When I was in my teenage years, I used to play cricket for my college’s first 11. One game we played away at Kumeu High School. We won the toss and sent the opposition in to bat on a gloomy looking morning. I was fielding at first slip and remember having some light banter with one of the batsmen who then proceeded to try and hit me with his bat.

When it was our turn to bat, I opened the batting in our innings. I did not have my own helmet so I borrowed the school gear bag one (it was too small and a piece of metal was digging into my temple on the inside of the helmet).

The opening bowler for Kumeu was a left arm fast bowler. His first ball he pitched up and I defended it down the wicket. The second ball he bowled a short ball and I ducked under it. The third ball was another short fast delivery and I attempted to play the hook shot. I missed the ball and it hit me in the head on the temple, right on that piece of metal digging into my head. I remember feeling this ringing in my head and I fell to the ground. I was out for around 10 seconds or so. Back then people didn’t care as much about concussion and head injuries so the opposition were actually sledging me when I was getting to my feet. I decided to play on. Next ball was another bouncer and I again tried to play the hook shot and luckily it just missed my head. I got out pretty soon after that and I couldn’t even tell you if we won or lost.

I went to the sidelines and took my gear off. Got the keys from my Dad who was doing the scoring and went and lay in the car for the rest of the game. Following that I ended up going to school on the Monday and I still had concussion symptoms, so the teacher sent me to the doctor who proceeded to give me a big lecture about not coming in earlier.

Anyway, there were no long-term effects from that (at least not that I know of!).
