The Warriors have dealt a major blow to the player market with halfback Luke Metcalf inking a two-year contract extension to remain at the club.
Metcalf was set to be one of the most in demand players come November 1 with the likes of the Dragons circling. However he has decided to stay at the club for at least two more seasons.
The Warriors offered the 26-year-old a two year deal worth a little less than a million dollars a season. It is almost double what he stands to earn next year in the final year of his contract.
Metcalf had strongly been considering hitting the open market after recently having a baby and getting married. The desire to return to Australia was a consideration however he has opted to re-committed to the Warriors without exploring options elsewhere.
His season ended in round 17 because of a knee injury with Metcalf sitting on top of the Dally M leaderboard.
“Luke’s signing is really important for our club’s future,” said Warriors head coach Andrew Webster. “He showed this season the impact he had on our side and, with the right luck with injury, I know he’ll improve again and be dominant.
“I’m so happy he and his family have faith in us to go to the next level.”
Metcalf, who is in Fiji for his honeymoon, said he wants to lead the Warriors to their first title.
“I’m so lucky to have a coach like Webby (Webster) and a CEO like Cam (George) who trust and believe in me,” Metcalf said. “They gave me the chance to be a halfback and gave me the keys to the team. “They trust me to guide this team around and get to the ultimate goal that we’re chasing. That was massive for me to have that. That’s something I’ve only ever wanted in my career.”

Daily telegraph reporting that his new contract is “almost double” that of his previous contract which was 500k/season.
900k-1m for 2 extra years is not a bad deal by us. Surprised he'd back down from a rumored 1.1m for 3 years from the dragons if that's all that was offered. Think he would of gotten higher and we would of (for good reason) not gone for a 3+ year extention.

I think its a fair deal for both parties, all things considered.

I also think the market would have indicated that as well.

If it’s a little less than a million a season, that’s a great outcome for the club

One thing I love about Luke being here is that is he is an out and out footy head, he lives and breathes the game - it’s an important thing to have in the squad. Going back a decade I would be surprised if half the team even watched other NRL games.
Dont even need to go back a decade. Remember when Walsh was here and how he was surprised noone else in the team watched any NRL games?

And Walsh was the rookie...
