Yeah i mentioned something similar in the game day thread.
We've been screaming out for quality halves at the Wahs for years and while we have a plethora of young exciging halves coming through, if CHT has another similar year I cant imagine that we would be getting rid of a half thats had 40+ try assists and tries in 2 years, where we finished 5th and hopefully in the 8 this year?

CHT is starting to find his way towards the top of the 'first picked list for me.
To win the comp you need some out and out stars like Metcalf, but you also need a fair few middle men - the ones who don't cost the earth, are consistenr and provide a platform for the bigger stars to shine. CHT and Ford are perfect examples of this kinda guy
And Chitty got two pies and laid on that beautiful no look short pass for Capey.

Then he has turned his ugly kicks into actual weapons. And he played both sides of the field.

    But this........and this is big.......

Chitty has ace personalised hand shakes. That Tanah try hand shakes was bad ass.

    Ten Observations from the game:

    1) James Fisher Harris is money in the bank for protecting a lead in the last ten minutes. He is an elite prop and better for this team than AFB was.
    2) We find out where we are at next week when we take on last year's minor premiers. This is going to be a battle up front. Tapine single handedly intimidated us last year but this time we have Fish and Barnett back. Will be one for the ages. But beating the Roosters is a great scalp.
    3) Laban had / has really bad ball security. I don't care that someone is putting hands in there and pushing the ball out illegally. Hold the ball anyway. I started watching ball security during the match and both TSS and CNK are like the bank of England at ball security. No one can pry it free from their clasp no matter what antics they try. Would really like to see Laban work on this.
    4) Boyd played at new levels he has never gone to before. He is starting to believe (Matrix reference).
    5) No comment on Ali's defence as it has already been quite rightly said. He either wants to be a part of the NRL or he doesn't. Commit to the tackle young man.
    6) CHT was great. Loved the partial return of Jungle ball. It is in our DNA let's play this way.
    7) The winning of the game was the crowd. Great support if you were there. I am going to the Warriors game in Wellington. We can only hope to come close to what Mt Smart put out on Friday. It really helps with referee decisions. Keep it up.
    8) This game was won up front. Jackson Ford. We always said about him that the knock was his pathetic ill discipline. And people said just let him get older. Well now he is 28 years old. Has he arrived? He very much is the type of forward you find making an impact for a top four team. You don't find a forward like him playing for a bottom 4 team or they would not be in the bottom 4. He looked legit.
    9) CNK looked a million dollars. Can he keep this up all season or will he fatigue by round 10. Let's hope he is back.
    10) All our attacking succcess barring the CNK try is coming down our lethal left edge. Take a bow CHT/ Capewell/ Pompey/ Roger - these guys are the engine room of the team. I bequeath that name to this edge. The left edge is the engine room of the team especially offensively.

Great win - our PD already off to a flying start.

I mean if your child’s health is priority why wouldn’t you just leave asap??
Everyone needs to stop speculating on this part. It’s kinda gross. No one need to know precisely what’s wrong with the kid to justify the personnel moves in their head.

There’s 1000s of different health conditions requiring 1000s of different interventions. Could be daily, weekly, monthly, or just monitored by a very particular specialist.

So CHT is still off contract? He is 26? He could have another close to a decade of footy left, he’s actually becoming a premier 6 under Webby, they need to extend him asap, local boy no compassionate issues either

Interesting Webby was quick to rhetorical deny his own statement saying 6 and 7 are interchangeable and he’s not suggesting anything. Boyd stepped up from the last panthers game again and if he continues like this Luke could be playing 6, but CHT is growing rapidly so maybe off the 6-men bench until injuries or other teams work us out? FB and CNK to centre? 😂

TMM’s probably gone next year we have so many halves

Great game, reminded me a lot of our 2023 game plan with bodies in motion and Boyd taking on the line.
Boyd looks better on the left so maybe he slots in there when the messiah returns?
As much as I like Leka I'm beginning to get "Hurrell" vibes, hope he tames it down.
Man people take CHT for granted, hard out. Two tries and a beautiful pass to set up Capewell, he was the equal of Boyd at least.

Just on the Capewell try the off the ball movement in this spread is elite and really does reinforce these guys weren't just running sand dunes over the off season.

Boyd receives it on the run from the ruck, drops 2 forwards under, accelerates to get outside his man (his speed off the mark is a tad underestimated i think) then has Ford running a hard front line and goes out the back to Chanel. who has Pompey out the back and Capewah running that hard Briton Nikora like out to in run.

@Dannevegas u wouldve enjoyed that? U were commenting on our decoys lack of intent,,,,,the key i think is that nobodies really a decoy.....all runners are live and thats the way they should be expecting it,

Incidently Egans crisp service from dummyhalf doesnt get enough mention. Have another look at Tannah's try where he strolls through. Recieving it from the ruck on an out line, that pass is flat and bullet like from Egan which puts him straight away on the outside of his man.....looks simple but executed perfectly.

A pt about Capewah: I have never seen him run such a good line like he did tonight. Maybe we are just used to him being such a defensive rock and an important leadership ingredient that we forget that he is also a great footy player. Hopefully we see more of that for the coming weeks.
Yeah when we lost Metcalf we magically lost Capewells line breaks and support play on attack.

Last night was a return to the form the Warriors found in the last game 2025 vs the Panthers.

I cannot stress how important that statement in bold is:

The biggest problem of the Warriors club is that they can randomly get up for one off high adrenaline games like a finals game against the Panthers, then a week later come out flat and get a hiding.

We have never seen this club an offseason later come out and smash a team stacked with more famous NRL players than our makeshift halves last night.

Andrew Webster is starting to correct a lot of life long imbalances at this club.

So what has that to do with Capewell? well that attacking game last night of his was on display without his familiar combination with Metcalf....so Webster has done some amazing preseason work/transformation of these players....unbelievable....truely was the best preseason ever....

He gets caught in that grey area where you’re hesitating to commit to the tackle, he’s holding off waiting for the right opportunity because once you commit you either make it or not.
So ye he holds and holds then just ends up getting burnt on the outside.

Having watched Ali's defensive issues closely over multiple seasons.....you have outlined the mechanics of what he is doing.

Problem is, lets be brutally honest here, the reason he misses tackles is that he is looking to avoid the contact period, that is the fundamental problem of why he hesitates.

And I am not making this up. Why are we even trying to find excuses when ALL of us should have seen this movie before.....with countless young Warriors star hopefulls (especially pre Webster/ Tangata Toa).

What Ali does, is what Hurrel did. What Carlos Tuimavave did. What dozens of Warriors made products have done time and memorial. They coast through Juniors and Reggies carving up on attack while hoping to get away with it on the defensive side.

Ali's problem is not technical, it is psychological.

You know how I know this 100%? Because the exact same very talented player types from our system also avoid doing the dirty work when we have the ball, they either pass before the line without drawing players, or they frankly hide when a dummy half run needs taking.

When you see that off the ball behavior in tackling, and you see it on the ball....you have a syndrome....you have a undeniable pattern of avoidance of contact and extra effort.

I wish people would stop suggesting all these types of players "to give us more Xfactor" without squaring the ledger of these claims with actual solutions for how are you gonna put star attacking player X in there when this sport is won through defence....not Try's (ever wondered why the Dolphins are not a Top NRL club? the Titans anyone?....or Stickies old Raiders - now using defensively sound rounded attacking players).

Ali will not come right with coaching. He has had that all his life, he will get it right when he is put in Cup and told, this is it mate, start tackling and running the ball up or your being pulled from NSW cup and what you do from there probably should involve your manager.

A+ from the referee too I thought in that game. Yes we got the bounce of the ball and 50/50 calls etc but there weren’t any howlers. And I loved the way he dealt with Tedescos bratty whining. Like any good parent should - tell them they’re wrong and then turn your back on them and leave them to cry in time out.

Dear NRL, Can we please get Wyatt for all our home games? 😂

How good is it waking up on a Saturday after a big win on Friday night. So good!

On reflection, we really did get the bounce of the ball last night. I would say 70% of the time last year, either that Pompey try isn't given by the ref, or the Charnz put down/DCE try would have been given, or both would have gone the other way.
Both of CHT's tries had an element of luck about them, and on another night that ball hit Lindsy Collins on the chest and he scores under the post, with only 6 points the difference with 5 to play.

That's not to say we didnt play well, or didnt force the Roosters into many of their errors. Its just rare that the bounce of the favored us on almost every occasion. Even the challenges, our successful one and their unsuccessful one, ive seen way worse ones given/not given. We were on the right side of both....so fortunate

I think it would have been a great game learning wise from our younger players. While there were some great moments, I thought generally Ali, Laban, Healey, Vaimauga, Leka and Tanner all had errors and issues in their game. The bench and energy they bring usually is a positive momentum switch for us, however we seemed to stagnate in that 30-60 min period or so.
Im really hoping that if Barny is back in the next few weeks hell help with that period, having a seasoned vet like him coming on will help steady the ship.

Overall, really really pleasing start to the year and something we can hopefully improve on

We added the offload in the offseason. Didn't overplay it, and I think it's a much needed addition.
And also keeping ball alive. In prior seasons we would hold the ball rather than going for speculative passes, but they just seem to stick and players were around. Only round 1, but quite a few positives to take from that match.

I do echo Webster's sentiments post match that i think the scoreline did flatter us at the end, and despite us having strongholds at certain points, we let them back in very easily. Roosters are a good attacking team so its not an easy feat to contain their threats, but we really need to work on some areas, especially's Ali's (lack of) defence. Noone questions his attack, but his defence is a worry, especially after his trial performance where you would think that would have been his primary objective to show how much he has improved in that area since last year. First grade start on the back of that showing, and then the same dished out last night indicates that he is still not ready. We are all in his corner and would love to see him succeed as we desperately need a centre with his attack, but his defence is such a worry, and surprised he didnt get targetted more.

But to be honest id rather talk about that Pompey step! Such an unsung hero! Chanel, im really warming upto. Maybe he isnt just a "fill in". Capewell turning back the clock and his line running. Ford was just excellent. Best game for Tanah in the jersey. He was awesome. Lots to like, lots of improvement still to be had also.

This game will be a great confidence boost to the team. We can score points!

I feel you can tell a lot about a team in the first 3 weeks, as the preseason conditioning sets you up for the season.

To me we are fitter again but what impresses me most is the sharpness and reaction time from each player. It’s the Bellamy secret sauce - all his players are super sharp with super fast reflexes which when played out across a game make a massive influence in the outcome as winning minor moments accumulate.

It comes through in higher completions, freak passes sticking, getting a hand on a player in defence where previously you wouldn’t, things just look easier because your operating at a slightly faster speed. It also hopefully results in less injuries!

My big picture take away from the game is we have the conditioning and sharpness that’s been missing in the past and is needed to get to the very top level.

We may win and lose some games and form go up and down but the underlying player conditioning Webby has set us up with is seriously exciting.

they are off their head if they think they were hard done by. If anything, the ref has to be taken to task for not having the balls to hand out a sin bin (probably should have been at least 2). At the ground you could see how cynical their tactics were. I have to assume that this is a deliberate coaching tactic as the chooks have always been an ill-disciplined team under Robbo. So maybe Robbo needs to look at himself in the mirror.

Ali’s defence was bad - someone needs to work with him on that .

I watched Healey with interest and his service from dummy half is not great - again another work on .

It was good to see Mark Peard back behind the mic tonight !

Unfortunately, what Leiataua showed on defence tonight was nothing new. It was my biggest worry leading into the game. This is his 4th season around the FG side now. Sure he has had a lot of injury disruptions, but for a big body his contact on defence is very poor. He reminds me of Peta Hiku, but Hiku could score or set up a brilliant try for every one he let in.

I'm not for him working it out in FG personally. He needs to go to reserve grade, do the hard yards and dominate the opposition on defence. You can't hide defensive liabilities in FG. Granted we are low on options.

Just got back from the game. What an atmosphere it was. Warriors fans are the best. Some observations I made from the game.

Our ruck defence is still shit. Players falling off tackles, etc.
Leiataua and DWZ can't tackle and defend for shit.
Jackson Ford is a machine and made some good runs tonight.
CNK is not the player he once was. I don't think he should be fullback moving forward.
Boyd and CHT had good games.
Naufahu Whyte was a handful all night and most improved.
Tedesco is a tackle breaking freak.

We won is all that matters.
