Update regarding TMM- He will be out for 3 months

AKP not named due to concussion protocols

Man TMM is a poor bastard. Every time he seems to get an opportunity he ends up injured.

2023 started the year as 6, injured after Rd 6 I think, only got a look in at the end of the year after LM gets injured.
Last year after getting a start against the Dogs, gets injured.
Now with the Halfback spot wide open he's out for 3 months. Man what an unlucky dude :(

I thought I’d get a bit of context of how we were tracking last season around the first trial and if anyone else wants to have a look, the trials are around page 13 in the Warriors threads. Interesting reading that we played a sharks b team described by some to a 12 all draw. By the looks we played Metcalf, JFH and plenty of our first team players too. I would say the comments largely mirror this trial, people had concerns about Capewell and Erin Clark after their first trial but a comment that stood out is none of our young players look ready. That’s a real contrast to what I saw on Saturday with the young guys being the most impressive I thought. Interesting was to look at Pasikala last year and the comments, all at sea sea etc. Complete contrast this time with Pasikala impressive I thought, probably best outside back in my view watching against manly. Both opponents well under strength in 2025 and 2026 so neither opponent worthy of consideration that was the harder game

Yikes. I've watched all five Warriors games so far this season and it's hard to overstate how poor the performances have been. From the Harold Matts and SG Ball through to last night's NRL trial, they've looked undercooked: slow, predictable, lacking in aggression, low on creativity, and less fit than the opposition. They also look, frankly, under-coached. Because the club has adopted Webster's philosophy and systems for alignment through the grades, the accountability starts with him. The current one-out, hit-it-up-the-middle tactics with minimal variation, risk, or ad-lib is brutal to watch, and it's showing up across the grades.

The frustrating part is that it's so clear that the game has moved on from that approach. Recent rule changes, including the tweaks this season, have opened matches up even further. Speed, support play, and off-the-cuff moments are now more dangerous than ever (as we've seen from other teams in both the trials and the junior grades), yet Webby seems to have retreated even further into conservatism. And for anyone arguing he's playing 4D chess and hiding some revolutionary attacking shape to unveil in Round 1, that's not how Webby has ever operated. The attack was bland and one-dimensional last season, and looked much the same in their initial hit-out. And yes, the Panthers and Storm also got hammered in their first trials. But they didn't field teams anywhere near as close to NRL standard as the Warriors did. Playing at home. In the wet. Against a combined NSW Cup/SG Ball team.

Webby may well be one of the NRL's best man-managers. The players clearly like him and management publicly backs him. That's a meaningful part of building a high-performance environment. But the serious question remains: can he actually coach this team to look consistently sharp and well-drilled? Honestly, aside from the heavily structured and well executed sweep plays in 2023, have Webster teams ever looked really well coached in the same way the Panthers do, or the Storm, Roosters, Raiders, and now the Bulldogs? I'm starting to wonder. The ultra-conservative game plan, embedded across the grades, plus the unwavering loyalty to players and coaches (assistant and lower grade) may end up being his fatal flaw.

I desperately want Webby to succeed here. I love his positivity, how he has embraced New Zealand, his drive to win. But he said something profound a while back that has stuck with me: you can’t win a premiership in the off-season, but you can lose one. Meaning, you can muck the pre-season up for the season ahead by focusing on the wrong things, not working hard enough, or pushing the squad too hard. I feel like something has happened here, one of the three has materialised. But I'm not sure which yet. If we see more of the same on Friday night, it's fair to ask whether this is a slow start or signs of a deeper issue manifesting.

After rewatching the second half (mainly to see how the pathways boys were looking) with a little less caring about the scoresheet, I actually think webby would be happy with the majority of the boys.

All of them looked fit and seemed dialled in, except from the expected rust. It was clear from his pre match interview he wanted everyone to get a run.

We definitely didn’t throw anything at them but I don’t think we were even trying to, more focused on individuals playing well. It looked like the fringe 1st graders were almost more subdued than some of the younger boys getting a chance.

The other big takeout for me was how depth we have in our backs now, compared to last year and the year before. Not just the new boys but the ones who have been here for a year or two ( Kali, pasikala, Hansen) all played way better than previous years. Motu particularly, he was green as anything last year, but looked solid this year.

    Highlights for me
    - Mellars has the athleticism to be a real problem on the wing eventually
    - pasikala and Kali are way ahead of this time last year
    - inch is a great runner, looks strong in bouncing out of contact and a good footy brain
    - RTV has the height and frame to be a monster and looks very aggressive.
    - junior Sikuvea seems very strong on the carry and tough on D. Looks promising as a replacement for Clark eventually
    - jack Thompson has some classy playmaking skills and puts his body on the line. Just needs to break 70 kg
    - Tafua looks like natural scrappy hooker, good instincts
    - tss was clearly a level above some of the other middles on the park. Again, awesome progress vs this time last year
    - putuko looks like a great OB prospect

It looked like we had the most energy and go forward in the last 20 when the young ins came on and had a crack.

    Rant over, Exciting times!

I am cautiously optimistic having had heartbreak like all of us. Could easily end in tears, after round 1 last year I was thinking a shit season was ahead so need to give them a game or two to settle in before writing them off. If we get 50 put on us in round 1, we’re fucked as you you can’t win the comp conceding 50 so the saying goes

It's funny but I am really upbeat about this year.

As I get older I change the way I enjoy the Warriors. In my youth it was always attached to the dream, you know the one....I won't say it out loud for fear of....

I recon a lot of men attach the success or failure of their sports team to their own identity. I say men because I am a bloke and I dunno how Women process being a fan.

But the point I am making is that defining yourself by the success or failure of the Warriors is really bad for your health. I'm one of the worst people at doing that. The ole ego takes a hammering if you blur the lines between the Warriors being losers and yourself by virtue of calling yourself a Warrior lifer - you are going to see yourself the same way.....that cliche about insanity comes to mind, you know repeating the same mistakes....yadda yadda....and then when things get really bad you are living the serenity prayer like an addict....accept the things I can't change blah blah blah

I recon that is why a lot of us fans get lost. We get trapped in this win loss rewards system, and miss the opportunity to understand this thing that we claim to be experts in...I mean really understand it.

Let me stop waffling and use my own example. So some years ago I started focusing more on having empathy for the players and coaches. I did a deep dive into where these 'çrap coaches, and crap players' were coming from - their origins, figuratively and literally. Long story short, we have fundamentally broken system in the sport here in NZ. And the NRL salary cap is broken, especially when it comes to a system that is outside of Australia, and so where these people come from is a poor beginning.

We have Cappy now and the top down bosses. Every year the excitement builds as Cappy's system keeps winning on and off the field. Last year it really took off with the arrival of Leka, Laban, Dimitric, EIT, and to a lesser extent Tanner. I mean WOW our pathways exploded, and too a man they were ready, they were finished products as undergraduates of the system.

Then you factor in Webster and the changes he made to Metcalf, and the way he uses a game plan that suits the limited talent we have in our backs.

So yeah, I am excited this year, I don't give a shit about the ladder right now, I won't get sucked into this 'we better win this week ' mentality (that is an example of ego - my team good/that team weak, if we lose my team sucks).

Excuse the lecture. I read your excitement and felt inspired.

Barney can easily command more than year to year extensions. The club will need to decide if they want to commit another 3-4 years to him.
Barney will be 33 when his current contract expires. He’s been relatively injury plagued and I feel Father Time has been catching up to him. He’s a smallish prop coming to the end of a longish career.

Signing him until a 36 or 37 year old isn’t what the Storm or Panthers would do.

Just watching the interviews from Webby & RTS etc, Jye Linnane should be available round 4-5 from his ACL rehab. Rocco's injury is separate from the one he had end of last year too where he tried to let it heal but didn't heal properly so had to have surgery. Mentioned Rocco will hopefully be back in April so round 4-8.

Also Webby named such a strong squad due to having so many players away for Allstars so instead of training with 6-7 players away they will get a good hit out in the first trial instead.

RTS reckons Ali gonna have a big year.

The person who I am most excited about seeing this weekend is Vaimauga. During the pacific tests the top tier elite power forwards looked incredible. People like Tapine and Whyte and Erin Clarke were beyond impressive. However young Vaimauga held his own and looked like he belonged at this level. People are talking up Leka as being a future star but I think we could be on to something as well with Vaimauga. He could be legit.
