General YOUR 2023 WARRIORS TEAM

If you were to name a team now, it would go like this:

CNK

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak
Vailea
Montoya
Kosi

TMM
Shaun Johnson

Addin Fonua-Blake
Egan
Barnett
Niukore
Harris
Curran

Tevaga
Walker
Afoa
Ben Murdoch-Masila/Ale

I think the backline picks itself. I think Walker was bought for cover. He has utility value. They want to end up with Vailea/Berry in centres. Berry's defence is still crap. He is indecisive. So Montoya at centre makes sense for now. Niukore at centre is nowhere near as good as him at second row. Harris in second row because we need some running skill there. Barnett is solid. But teamed with Niukore may not provide enough variety/flair in second row.

1 CNK will definitely be fullback
2 Dallin
3 Walker
4 Vaillea
5 Montoya
6 TMM or Metcalf I think they will pick Martin
7 Shaun Johnson
8 Addin Fonua-Blake
9 Egan
10 Afoa
11 Barnett
12 Niukore
13 Harris

14 Lussick
15 Curran
16 Ale
17 Jazz - to come on at 13 and Harris to prop

NRL Level Depth Players
18 Ben Murdoch-Masila
19 Metcalf
20 Volkman
21 Kosi
22 Pompey

If getting really short
23 Pene he needs to step up next year even if just as a tacklebot
24 Sironen I am lost for words for what he needs to do
25 Otukolo needs to improve his service

If desperate
26 Kepu - get bigger only just turned 20
27 Kepu - get bigger
28 Berry - Improve at tackling

I think walker should be a centre next year rather than a utility off the bench
The warriors are short on talent and he needs to be a starter
Changed my mind
With the lack of forward depth walker canā€™t play centres all next year
He needs to be in the pack

that's a hot team - encouraging. Would be even better if we had another first grade prop ... i have faith we will get someone, or one of the development players can start a break out year

Iā€™m getting a feeling, just a feeling we will be this years cowboys. Roger Will come home to get one last crack at a premiership for the Warriors, after realising Union is shit. Thereā€™ll be a real strong vibe around the club that we can do something ā€œ2018 esqueā€, Webster turns out to be a gun coach and get the most out of the boys, Johnson to say enough is enough and find 2020 form and take us to top 4ā€¦.fair game from there.

In Origin they pick the best 17 and just find positions for people. E.g. Fullbacks play at centre etc.

With that in mind I say we use next year as a rebuilding year and play Vaillea, Taine, and Metcalf as much as possible so they are ready for 2024. All three of them have mastered ISP level and have nothing left to learn there.

1 CNK - has to be him as we had an offensive fuillback in 2022 and that was a disaster.
2 Dallin
3 TMM
4 Taine
5 Vaillea
6 Metcalf
7 Shaun

Your centre pairing arenā€™t centres?
Walker and Lussick on the bench?

Latrell and Turbo played centre at Origin level and they are not centres.
I am using Walker as a second row / lock in my squad. He will come to Lock and Harris will have a spell at prop at that point is my thinking.
Benji played centre for Souths last year and he is not a centre.

Latrell and Turbo and big bodies and also world class players, could play them anywhere in a team and they would do well TMM and Taine are tiny and lack the physicality for center, it would be a disaster on defense and would nullify there best attacking attributes.

I like your general point of playing your best players but I don't think this is the way to go. I would go CNK and Vailea at center with Taine at 1 and TMM at 6 if we were to go that route. Personally I would have Taine start the year in NSW cup and bring him in slowly.

TMM and Tuaupiki arenā€™t Turbo and Trell?
Benji came off the bench
It's a matter of scale. A normal NRL match is a scale down from Origin so our candidates for centre don't have to be the best players in the world like Latrell and Turbo are.
But we can learn from Origin by playing two fullbacks at Centre like NSW did and Taine and TMM are fullbacks just as much as Turbo and Mitchell are.

My hesitation with putting them at centre is their size. Both Taine and TMM by memory are hovering around 5 foot 10 and 85kgs when soaking wet. Many other centres are a bit bigger and maybe 90kgs.

There are two schools of thought for picking a team
1) Pick the best specialist player for each position
2) Pick the best athletes and force square pegs into round holes if necessary

They definitely do option two at Origin level. I would be keen on us playing our very best backs in our starting 13 and being a run and gun side next year, No point being conservative and finishing 12th,
Option one pick the best specialists works well when you have a wide catchment to pick from like the Kiwis national side.
