Looking towards the future, wouldn't it be great if John Ackland became the Warriors coach.
I think the guy is what we need in terms of using our development players and chancing his arm with players who are up and coming and turning them into super stars.
Also it would be great to have a Kiwi coaching the Warriors.
I think personally and too many times we have looked for coaches who are from across the ditch to bring a harden mentality to the side and turn our polynesians into skinny safety first footballers. It would be nice to back a coach who has done the hard yards in Bartercard Cup and worked hard in the grassroots and actually understands how different players polynesian, maori and pakeha function on and off the field.
I know some would ask but why not Tony Kemp?
I dont think Tony Kemp ever did the hard yards in Bartercard Cup or had respect of nearly every single Bartercard Cup or Warriors Junior player.
Most times I think coaches have trouble capturing the interest of some of our players and I think its a big mistake saying they lack the concentration of say a pakeha player, its just that their potential has not been realised yet. If you capture the interest of a player and motivate him to perform you get a Sonny Bill Williams compared to a Lauaki.
I just hope if 2006 is going to be a developing year that we do give John Ackland a chance to become the head coach and let him have atleast 10 games in 2006 to work out some combinations. The reality is that in 2007 and 2008 if we want to be succesful the Bartercard Cup players are going to lift the Warriors on their shoulders and take responsibility in getting us to the top 8 and beyond. With the salary cap issues our faith in them will become default and not a choice. I think the best man to lead that change is John Ackland.
