General Would An Nrl Magic Weekend Work In New Zealand?

What Do You Think Of Playing An NRL Version Of Magic Weekend Played Across New Zealand?

This weekend in Super League they have Magic Weekend. Basically they play an entire round of football at one stadium.

It started off in Super League as a way to try and expand the game. Now, they just play it in Manchester.

I wrote an article on my web site suggesting the concept could be adopted by the NRL but on a bigger scale. Play an entire round of NRL football across New Zealand. Here is this link: https://www.leaguefreak.com/an-nrl-...end-play-an-entire-round-in-new-zealand-4450/

How do you lot think it would be received?

I tend to think it would be a great way to kick off the season. It would be the perfect way to welcome a second New Zealand based NRL team into the competition. I think it would be a fantastic boost for Rugby League in New Zealand.

Am I right or wrong? Would it work?

There was a similar plan, which I believe was meant to be this year when it was suggested a couple of years ago. 3 at Suncorp, 3 at ANZ and 2 at Eden Park for Round One

See I don't see any benefit from playing games at just a few stadiums. Its not like NRL fans travel in huge numbers, the geographical scale of the competition just doesn't make it practice.

If you're going to do something like this you have to accept that most fans aren't going to travel to see their teams play. So you'd better make sure where ever you play the games, they are going to get decent crowds.

I think you'd get the ideal scenario playing these games across New Zealand as opposed to just a few stadiums that would only lower the aggregate crowd anyway for no real benefit.

porbably better in sydney. i dont know how much interest in teams outside the warriors there is in nz. would people have to pay for every game?

Of course they would, its not a charity event!

There would be ZERO benefit playing an entire round of games in Sydney. We play most games in Sydney anyway!

Playing a proper version of the magic weekend would be great. I'd go anywhere in NZ for that.
Just playing a whole round in random locations around NZ just seems daft.
I can't see many people in say Christchurch for example turning up to see two teams they don't give a toss about playing.

Expansion of the nrl imo should not be in NZ, players don't want to come to Auckland there's even less chance they'd want to go elsewhere in NZ.

I'd say this would work if the Warriors were any good, and i say no to another team in NZ atm..

I think that having it solely in NZ wouldn't work. I think a better use of the time would be having games in Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Chch (or Dunedin) and Wellington all in the one weekend
