Webcke Wants Win
Brisbane enforcer Shane Webcke will be the centre of attention at Suncorp Stadium following Sunday’s clash with the Warriors but in true Webcke style he’s more concerned with the win and the next step into the finals rather than his farewell to the fans.
Webcke will retire at the end of the season following a stellar career that has included 20 test matches, 21 origin games and 3 Premierships with the Broncos and Sunday will be his last regular season game at the ground.
“In the football side of things it is just another game, all be it a very important one for the club.
For me personally it’s another game of footy and the special bit comes at the end of the game, because that’s when I acknowledge the crowd and the many thousands of supporters who will be there on that day and indeed over the years but might not be there on the day. It’s just my chance to say thank you.â€Â
The Raiders farewelled a number of veterans on Sunday in Canberra and 17-year veteran Jason Croker said during the build up he expended a lot of nervous energy and that’s something Webcke is looking to avoid.
“He’s right, it’s only natural I’m going to have a lot of that nervous stuff going on, that’s only to be expected but I’m sure I can control that to a certain degree.
I’ll just try to keep things as normal as possible, obviously there will be a lot of media and things I have committed to this week, but I’ll do that early and slip into my normal routine.â€Â
The Broncos have put together back to back wins, not conceding a point along the way, with Brad Thorn also returning to his best but Webcke says they’re not getting carried away.
“Great to see him play like that again and I think we had a few like that. It was a really good performance but tempered by the fact it was an under strength Parramatta side and after a long winning streak they’re entitled to have an off day.â€Â
Many believe that to go to the Telstra premiership decider the top teams must continue to improve from week to week at the business end of the season and Webcke says the Broncos have room to improve. Despite two good wins over top 8 sides.
“We’ve got plenty. We’ve had a couple of good games but you’ve just got to keep inching away, in terms of momentum, you’ve got to keep it going.
Because the one thing you need in a finals series is momentum, if you’ve got it you can do something in the finals.
If you don’t have it you can’t do anything. It’s just about each week that execution being that little bit better. It’s just the little things; just little advances are all that’s required.â€Â
Webcke says the Broncos will need to continue that improvement on Sunday against the Warriors and not just rely on the emotion of the day.
“They’re going really well, we face a battle alone in the game of footy regardless of the significance for me; personally we’ve got a fair job on our hands.â€Â
The big prop says despite the Warriors season being over they always aim up against the Broncos and won’t just be going through the motions.
“No they won’t. And I’m sure in some way they’d like to spoil our party a little bit and I’m sure they see that as an opportunity to do so.â€Â
A veteran of 12 seasons in the NRL Webcke says he won’t be watching any other games this weekend to see where in the 8 they might finish, nor will he check out the form of rival clubs.
“You can only play what’s in front of you. We’ve got our hands full with the Warriors this weekend; it would be folly to start looking too far ahead.â€Â
Webcke will be 32 in Grand Final week and already has his immediate life after football mapped out.
I’ll have a role at the club and stick my head in now and then. I’m ready to move onto the next part of my life it’s not something I’m daunted about. I’ve loved being a footballer, I’ve enjoyed my career but it’s time for the next step.
I’m in the fortunate position where I have a lot of avenues open to me and I’ve already sorted out some media work for next year, my role with the club and my own business interests.
So I have no problem at all with my life after footy. I just want to enjoy the last phase of it now and get on with the rest of my life.â€Â
While Webcke is confident of blocking out the emotion in the lead up to and during the clash with the Warriors what will happen after full time is less certain. In fact he won’t even rule out the possibility of shedding a tear.
“I hope not. It might shatter that tough image I’m trying to portray.
Any sort of emotion like that that I feel I’ll try to deal with privately and move on.â€Â
And any thoughts f the fairytale ending with a Grand final win are quickly ruled out with an emphatic response.
“No, I don’t dare to dream about the fairytale send off. I’ve had my perfect send off in a lot of ways with the career I’ve been lucky enough to have with such a wonderful club and be part of such wonderful things.
If I don’t get the wonderful last day with a Grand Final win I’m not particularly worried. I’d always want it for the greater good of the club and the players who remain there.â€Â
