The education and current legislation seems to be doing a very good job of reducing smoking. And the amendments that have been cancelled seems to be ignoring the data, particularly with our youth.

Older people and lower socio economic people are seen as having the highest smoking rates.

Our youth smoking has been in decline and youth who have never smoked has risen significantly.

Unfortunately youth vaping has had a dramatic increase...

But they're not really doing anything regarding vaping are they. Their play is directly from the tobacco industry. It's a massive win for tobacco, the world is laughing.

The vaping changes are tinkering around the edges. Why does this have to be an either or thing? It should be restrictive for all forms of addictive smoking.

Instead we've thrown away the chance to be world leaders and the chances to establish new health standards, and protect our population with a much lower health impact

An astroturf big tobacco campaign, recently. Part of the strategy is ramping up the fear around gangs and ram raids. Sound familiar?

Disgusting they're providing billions in profits and tax cuts and costing the nz public lives and billions in health costs.

That's what people on here don't seem to grasp - the Tabacco industry own vaping and will spend millions of dollars lobbying for vaping as they have done on smoking.

They fund the diary owners campaign "Save Our Stores" - They fund The Tax Payers Union.
They fund lobbyists to attack health campaigns on social media.

It quite possibly would to you.

This current coalition is getting a fair bit of flak, some warranted and some not so much.

The new Minister for Space (and a new Minister for Mental Health) should be seen as a good, progressive move for the country.
You have faith she is the right person for the job?

Should of gone for Maureen Pugh.

Guess I would be just trying to understand what would be involved with the role? The other ministers you mentioned are representatives of their sector which I can understand but a big part of roles in those sectors like agriculture or fisheries is negotiating trade deals etc which I don’t see a point for a space minister. It’s a fluid topic which I’m not totally up to speed with so just needs more understanding for the likes of myself to get onboard with. Not saying it’s a bad idea.

Similar vein to why I asked about why a new minister of mental health is a good idea.

I am not opposed to the move, I think it could be a good thing, the most obvious being a direct line to the Cabinet for funding for the mental health sector, rather than competing with the other health speciaties (Psych is a poor cousin of the total health budget, I could tell horror stories that would disgust people about Mental health patients funding and housing being removed because some professor wants a new super flash health center in the more sexy stuff like plastic surgery).

Early 1980s the Health board sold Carrington for seventy million, put the several hundred patients on the street with no housing, no follow up, no one to supervise their medication, no one to tell them how to use money or get benefits.

A dirty secret so dark that the World Health organization stepped in and commissioned a seventy page report on Auckland health cares mental health and homelessness crisis's and exposed that the Health board spent the Seventy million from selling Carrington on facilities in general medicine which they liked.

The story gets darker, a lot darker.

A truly very ill man in the long term secure unit at that time, had been telling staff that he cannot be let out or he will go and kill people immediately.

The Staff knew this guy, they knew he had no control over that, they knew 100% that he was just going to get out and go directly to kill people, because he had voices which he had zero control over and the meds did not work.

So four hundred staff protested, picketed the work site, the media were not interested.

That poor man walked out the day they let him loose, made it as far as Ponsonby where he picked up a large knife and just started stabbing people on the footpath.

Ergo our Govt commisions Judge Mason to do a report on these super max styled murderers living in doss houses and on the street, goes into a massive panic (frankly because Politicians are terrified of these people, they know if their family members get in the way their kids could get stabbed or have their heads cut off).

They built the Maxi super complex that we now know as Mason clinic, named after the Judge who did the report....and the Govt gave Forensic Pscychiatry close to an open cheque book (Forensics just literally means criminal in this context, criminal
Psych division).

I used to deal directly with the Minister of health in one of my mental health roles in forensics. This is because the special cases I dealt with were by law required to have direct oversight of their care by Parliament.

With this new move, I would be phoning and talking to the Minister of mental health instead.

Because a minister is not an expert in those situations, they defer to the countries top expert (Called the Director of Mental health, this countries highest ranked Psychiatrist who will be by default also the leading or close to Specialist Psychiatrist in forensics...the care of the Hannibals, rather than a garden variety psychiatrist).

The Director would then say something like "What Sup has asked permission for, to take Hannibal to Northshore Hospital in mechanical restraints plus seventeen staff escort has to go ahead in my opinion, please stamp the Fax and send it through to Sup at (undisclosed location) and so on.....

In functional ways like that, nothing will change with having a minister of mental health, they won't be calling any shots on the ground (as with any ministry that is run how it is supposed to operate).

So the only use I can see for a specific minister of MH is as it pertains to funding.

And these political parties are known as the health funding slashers (fact, working under National in the past in the health sector was appalling and scary and I won't bore anyone about more stories like not being allowed to stock pressure bandages in case someone cuts open an artery because they have a limited shelf life and therefore cost money).

Blatant corruption. Far worse than anything Labour ever coughed up.

Fascinating read. There are some dark chapters in the history of this country to where we find ourselves today.

Yes big tobacco are the ones that use the strategy of Cigarette sales in their vaping products.

They add the boosters to the nicotine to make it more addictive. Something that the mom and pop Vape shops selling home made vapes cannot.

Big Tobacco push the disposable vapes, the sexy looking little keep it in your pocket types, which means they are attractive to young people, they require more frequent and habit forming replacement use when they run out.

This is the same strategy they used when they sold ten Cigarettes in a packet, that was aimed at children, being more affordable to get you hooked and within the pocket money or part time minimum wage teens.

Ergo one of the most effective moves against Big tobacco was the banning of ten pack cigarettes, placing smoking out of reach for some teens.

The exact same strategies are used in those Teen age mixer drinks, high potency easy drinking for the child palate sweet fizzy pop Vodka to hook children young, hard and fast.

This is why the targeted protection of 13 year olds in the legislation which the Satanic Cunts in charge are repealing.

Literally they are saying thirteen year olds must have the right to be exposed to the worst form of Nicotine Tar, and other noxious poisons.

It is Fking corruption, actual corruption and we all know it, even those trying to gas light with Vaping arguments know it. They cannot lie about that part, that it is big tobacco lobby corruption.

They can lie to us about it but they cannot lie to themselves poor fools.

What about the Act MP Nicole McKee, who was previously the president of New Zealand Council of Licensed Firearm Owners, which has been funded and trained in PR by the NRA...

Pretty clear how easily the NZ political set up can be influenced by money.
Another example of the far right influence in this government
