General Warriors vs Auckland Vulcans trail..

I think ivan is just trying all his options in the games that are left before the season starts. I think hohaia would be found out positionally at fullback, it's very different to even playing centre. while he could be hany on attack someone else would have to drop back on defence and in that case I would rather just go for a specialist fullback.

If he did have a weakness on defense (which i don't believe he has) Lance could take heart from what arguably the greatest fullback to ever play used to say, Puig Aubert would say "he isn't there to tackle, there are 12 players in front of him that should be making the tackles".

If defense is his Con, when has he been beaten in defense?

My memory's vague so I can't give you other exact games at the moment other than when we played the Bulldogs at home last year; that game I remember well. Hohaia got trampled in defence at least 5 clear times to memory, not including when Andrew Ryan smashed him out of the way. However, with our style of play, when we do win it is usually by big margins so in those games he will probabaly run riot & score tries at will; it's just when a game turns into a grind I have doubts that he may cost us the game if he is at fullback.

There are 12 players in front but how many times has a fullback tackled a runaway player just before the line, or made a one on one tackle to save a try, which Wade did multiple times last year.

Did Lance need to make any try-saving tackles in the trial? I don't know that he'd have enough speed to make cover tackles when the opposition breaks the line, fullbacks seem to be out and out speedsters now.

Stacey has coloumn in RLW now and said he'd been spending a lot of time with Grant at the Warriors. Seeing as how Stacey was backing a move for Lance as his replacement at Les Catalans I wonder if he's spending the hours with Lance as well?

Going by the photos of Stacey's kicking training on the day his signing was announced, Hohaia was one of his studies. Rovelli, John, Fien, Witt and a few I didn't recognise were also kicking.

I doubt that quote will be very comforting when those 12 payers fail to stop a player breaking the line... ;)

I actually rate Hohaia on defense. He has one of the best tackling techniques in the NRL in my humble opinion, and I've seen him punch above his weight numerous times. (I remember vividly when we were playing the Tigers a few years back. A Tigers prop had the ball. He palmed off Guttenbeil, spun out of a Betham tackle, and then got picked up and dumped onto his back by none other than Hohaia.) But fullback is not his position. If he gets to the man, he's likely to stop him. But it's the getting to the man that is most difficult as a fullback. Having said that, one of the best positional fullbacks of recent times is our coach, so if Hohaia does end up in the number 1 jersey, hopefully Cleary can help him out.

It doesn't matter if you've got the frontliners doing it, the fullback still has to do it regardless. The front liners do miss from time to time (keep on tackling and you are bound to miss one). I think it is a lot to ask for him, but he's proved lots of time he can do just about anything so I don't think we can say he would be totally crap or that good. He's just middle ground perhaps. Even so he will get found out. Even specialists can get found out at times. One thing he has in his favour, having played so many positions and the experience he has, don't underestimate.

Seb, I was there at that Bulldogs game and we were one man short if memory serves me correct. The Bulldogs might be mongrels but to be that you have to cunning as well. So what do the the Bulldogs do - they run at place on the field where the Warriors are short on Defence. Hey even the biggest and best players have trouble with Sonny Bill - so when did Lance become Superman and be expected to stop him and the 3 other support players he had coming at him all day.?
