A squad of 36 players has started training for the One New Zealand Warriors’ return to the New South Wales Rugby League’s renowned S G Ball Cup in 2023.
It follows a 12-month search for Sky Sport Future Warriors prospects culminating in trials in both the North Island and South Island.

Over the coming weeks, the club will also be announcing players joining other preseason training squads for the U18 World 7s men’s and U18 World 7s women's competitions, as well as the elite U15/U16 summer training squad. Details regarding the coaching staff for these programmes will also be advised in due course.

Players to look out for (my opinion based on players I’ve seen play, not YouTube edits)

Ben Peni
Kayliss Fatialofa
Rodney Vea
Khalan Clyde ( could be any of the hookers really, it’s one position we look strong in)
Selu Helasima
Prestley Seamanu - Tigafua
Siale Suilagopo
Sio Kali
Tanner Stowers Smith

Players who I think could potentially play FG one day

Ben Peni
Sio Kali
Tanner Stowers Smith

Yup I agree with everything there

I’d probably go a team like the below:

1. Sio Kali
2. Nathan Salmon
3. Prestley Seamanu
4. Kaylis Fatialofa
5. Siale Faemani
6. William Piliu
7. Sefania Cowley Lupo
8. Ben Peni
9. Khalan Clyde
10. Tanner Stowers-Smith
11. Leka Halasima
12. Rodney Vea
13. Etuate Fukofuka

There's half a dozen QLD guys in there. Are they local boys who were just over there cause of the pandemic or did being stuck over there actually pay off in regards to us being able to scout guys we normally wouldn't?

Locals. As you mentioned it was due to the pandemic

Etuate Fukofuka is a huge get for us. Didn’t realise we had signed him. No idea what position he would play, potentially in the halves, hooker or as a ball playing/kicking lock? I think he’s got first grade written all over him.

I’d be giving Sio Kali the fullback jersey. He’s still raw as but he needs as many reps as possible. His ceiling is NRL superstar. Will only be turning 18 next year so could play another year of this.

Also didn’t know we signed Nathan Salmon who I’m a fan of. He’s the prototype of outside backs we should be scouting; extremely tall and fast. See a lot of Campbell Graham in him.

Those are probably my 3 future potential first grade picks, as well as Ben Peni, Tanner Stowers-Smith, Halasima, and Siale Feamani (if he can get to 2021 pre injury form)

They’re all NZ guys that went over. I don’t think any of them are elite prospects but they’ve somewhat been through the Australian development system which is probably attractive from our club’s perspective. They’ve all played at least some mal maninga cup I believe. But yeah I wouldn’t expect any of them starting round 1.

Just asked Peter Lang from the Weekender on Twitter and he said he has been signed but he’s not sure if top 30 or reserve grade.

This was a post from the panthers forum yesterday from a poster regarding Otukolo, though seems odd to go from a top 30 contract to a reserve grade one. Perhaps that’s what it takes to play for the best? Thinking about your statement that I’ve responded to, could this be why we are potentially letting such a highly regarded hooker go in Otukolo? Because we have some quality in the position coming up? Also with how Manuleleua has gone to the panthers and the amount of Aussie halves in that list you gave a run down on, has the club identified halves out of Aussie systems as what they will prioritise.
If Fukofuka is being groomed as a hooker, then he's a better prospect than Khalan Clyde.

Played halfback for St Peters 1st XV. But he's versatile as, could play halves in league with his kicking game and he's big enough to even play lock in league.

Tbf Otukolo had one of the best ever SG ball seasons, so its hard to predict how players will turn out.

Could make sense to move on Otukolo if we've made promises to Fukofuka around is progression into the top 30 or development list from 2024 onwards etc.

Incentivising someone out of ChCh or Wellington might help. Andrew Aumatangi seems to be doing a very good job out of Christchurch at St Thomas’s college.
If he can identify the talent early for the Warriors and get a financial reward for each grade they play?
A different set of eyes is also needed, or a wider network of scouts. . If it’s the usual suspects then it might need a rethink.

I personally think this guy is not the right man for the job. He’s been in this position for a long time , who was the last player from the South Island to play for the warriors.
I recruit for a local rugby club in Christchurch and our colts team would destroy the South Island 18s who finished 2nd in the nationals. Tanner Stowers smith wasn’t even on our radar before he signed for the warriors. At least 3 number 8s better than him in the crusaders competition.
There is some serious untapped talent in the sth island and I’m sure the lower nth island. When the warriors trialled here the 52 players in the crusaders under 18s squad weren’t allowed to trial. We need to get someone around the country and not just Auckland. This method obviously isn’t working. I’m not Auckland bashing either as there’s some serious talent up there.

Richie Tupua'ilei looks a great prospect but who are the other 2 #8's you rate higher? Seeing as Tanner Stowers-Smith was a regular amongst the top 25 Rugby Union players in country according to the High School Top 200 website & played for the Junior Crusaders there must be some other talent spotters who view his talents differently than your opinion. On the one occassion I saw him live this year he was best on the park when St Bede's defeated Christchurch Boys High

Interested in this. Was that because of the Warriors or the Crusaders?
Crusaders.
These 52 kids gets sold the dream of making the crusaders. In reality 10 of them will get academy spots for next year and 2 or 3 will end up playing super rugby in the future.
The other 42 will play club rugby in chch or Nelson. These 42 are the ones the warriors need to target.

Richie T is actually a prop , but played number 8 as St Thomas already had 2 quality props.
Harry Nossiter chch boys Nz schools crusaders academy
Matthew Lowe Nelson College nz schools crusaders academy
Cameron Blackwood St Andrews College
Hershel who does hstop200 does an amazing job , but his lists are very subjective. He gets a lot of his info off 1st xv coaches etc. He will even tell you he gets limited info from highlanders region , so not many of these kids get featured in his top 200. For example he has Ben Odonovan ranked number 10 player in the country and as number 1 halfback in crusaders region. As per the crusaders depth chart he’s ranked number 3 halfback and not good enough to get a spot in their academy.
Tanner is a good talent and I hope he goes on to play first grade. All I’m trying to say is there is a lot of talent out there. We just need to change how we find it. Cause what we’re doing at the moment isn’t working.

Have separated SG Ball threads so we can keep them in their year threads with 2023 seeing them play. The other thread has been turned into a general discussion thread. Any 2023 discussion about the team, players, team lists, game day and post match should go here.

Any unrelated discussion about the development of SG Ball in NZ, secondary schools, recruitment etc should go in the general discussion thread...
