The Kiwis aren't the only ones struggling for depth at five-eighths, with the Warriors also on the lookout for a No 6 for 2007.

They started the season with Sione Faumuina in the position, hoping he would develop into a long-term option, but soon reverted to Jerome Ropati.

But coach Ivan Cleary said "the jury is still out" on Ropati as a five-eighths and the club is understood to be searching for an alternative in Australia.

Ropati's future is not under threat, with the 21-year-old having proven a handy centre. The departure of Clinton Toopi at the end of the season leaves an opening there.

"I'm not sure if he's the man for the future," Cleary said. "He's shown some good signs but he's a little inconsistent. I think he has the ability to do it but I guess the jury is still out on him [as a five-eighths]."

The Warriors are keen to develop homegrown players in the key positions of the halves, hooker and fullback but will look to Australia in the short term.

Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said given the depth in the forwards, the club was focusing efforts on the make-up of the backs.

"We have around 19 or 20 players [of the squad of 25] already pencilled in or set in stone for next season," Scurrah said. "We have four to six spots up for grabs and they are the most critical so we are reviewing all our options.

"These will be made up from a combination of new players from our development system, options with current squad members unsigned and who is available on the market."

Brent Webb, Awen Guttenbeil, Evarn Tuimavave, Epalahame Lauaki and George Tuakura are all coming off contract at the end of the season.

It looks increasingly likely Webb will be replaced by Parramatta's Wade McKinnon, while Guttenbeil has also been told he can look for another club.

Negotiations with Tuimavave and Lauaki have stalled while their agent, Jim Banaghan, is in the UK. But Banaghan said the club had withdrawn its offer for Tuimavave after he was given a day to accept one on the table.

"We were told it was a once-only offer for 24 hours," Banaghan said. "Evarn has interest from all over the world and if the Warriors aren't smart, they will lose him because Evarn will have more homes to go to than [club owner] Eric Watson."

Today Ropati lines up against one of the game's best five-eighths, Brisbane's Darren Lockyer.

"Lockyer's the benchmark," Ropati said. "I've been watching a lot of clips of him and he's phenomenal."

If he can shut down Lockyer, the Warriors will have a chance and Ropati will have a better chance of convincing doubters he can be a long-term No 6.

Finally, we are actually looking for a good five/eighth that can do the job. I wonder who it is?

Right now I'm more interested in the news about Evarn. Don't trust a word Banaghan says though. he'd probably say the Chicago Bulls are interested if it meant squeezing out an extra dollar.

yeah banaghan sounds like a right tosser, i understand that he is trying to get top dollar..but lets be serious about it and not talk it up they he is...

i would like us to get john morris from parra, he is a very solid player and could play 6,7,9 if needed...

We already have a number of players who can play 6,7,9,13,4,3,1

ie
Sione
Ropati
Fien
Grant
Lance
Webb

If we are looking what about going for a specialist stand off/five eight?

travis burns and reni maitua are both off contract and would fit in nicely if we could secure them.....particularly maitua

haha yeah i noticed what i said after i posted it...oh well, reni would be asking too much i think...heard burns to the tigers..

I hope not, old and he doesn't do much more than Jerome does at standoff.

I agree totaly i've been watchiing morris he has a great kicking game, espicially short. He would'nt cost much either. Sign him. Travis burns is too inexperienced & hasn't had a chance to esablish a kicking game, reni would be asking for bundles plus hes kicking game is crap anyway. We need a kicker to help rovelli & the forwards. A good Kicking 5/8 should be our prority after fullbacks fixed.
If we lose evarn i'll have a seizure hes played crap for 3 years & when he stars producing we lose him, sign him for gods sake don't let this one get away. he can replace price when price goes he'd be a great invesment.

It's taken a while before the pros have realised how dodgy and crappy Ropati is!! Today was too obvius!

Yep if i was the Warriors i would be chasing John Morris, if we were to lose our favourite son Webb...we could possibly pick up Morris and McKinnion in a package like deal...

There is a rumour that Morris may go to the knights..and one that has Travis Burns to the Tigers and Reni to the Roosters..

it's not like we have any good halves in the lower grades at the mo...why not bring over a decent number 6? that way they could work with our young halves and help develop them.

Bring back Stacey! No disrespect to Buck, but the man is the man. Anyway, this iceman record was broke 3 years ago, and it still haunts me...Not contsructive, Put in the the best BC guy STRIDER. Sorry Ravs, you are too sexually biased. It's not all bad, but we don't win games...

Can't believe you just said that!
And as much as I am a Stacey fan I'd say no. Not because I don't think he's good enough but it's not like we were any better last year now we were with Stacey or not?

Actualy we were alot better in terms of winning games, we won 41% of our games last year we are winning less this year, if you don't believe me ask Leaguenut.
Stacey would replace Jerome Ropati he or Ravs would be the stand off.
With Stacey in the frame every single player on our team would be better.

Thank you for that piece of stat.
Yes, while the whole thing with Stacey might be all well and true, I just don't think one should go back on the past and hope it saves you. He's been and gone and as horrible as it was to face up to that's what's happened.
The trick I find with alot of fans lately is that they would love nothing more than having the 'good ol days' back. Hey, so do I! Those were the days you could run, scream and cheer like crazy. But those are moments in time which will remain forever, but you can't hang onto them for an enternity.

Yes I am a bias person in respect to things, everyone is bias in their own way. I'm jsut tired of people wanting all thise adoration of perfection to 'what was' or 'what could have been'

With regards to bringing back stace I think it could be a positive move he ould make a team better the instant he arrived on the field and off it. He is a walking breathing Rugby league New Zeland sporting ledgend.
