I know this has been brought up a million times before but I just dont think we can igonre the problem any longer. I think its a very logical conclusion to draw that the warriors are never going to be consistently competitive in t he NRL without a premiere league team.
Yes Ive heard its too expensive but it needs to be viewed as an investment not a expense. A premiere League team in theory would create a stronger pool of players, giving our juniors a taste of the speed of the NRL, this in theory will boost the performance of our NRL team. This in turn means more bums in seats, more merchandise sales, more advertising, more sponsorships.... in conclusion more $$$$$
Dont get me wrong the Bartercard is a great breeding ground for NRL teams to come over and poach our talent, but its not a great environment for plucking players out to fill in for the Warriors when injuries strike, pulling a player out of a premiere League team would be different.
It may also prove to be a good way of retaining youngsters. At the moment I just dont think there is a light at the end of the tunnel for our juniors in the NRL. I think putting these guys in the premiere league gives them a taste of NRL footy and gives them something to work toward.
Why do players who have played Bartercard cup seems to dissapear and then re emerge over in the NRL years later as superstars? Its coz they got the crap outta Bartercard, started playing in competitions like the Premiere League and gradually progressed into the NRL. This seems to be the best way of breeding superstars, not plucking them from Bartercard and shoving them straight into the NRL, which at the moment is the Warriors only option.
To be honest the Newtown Jets would probably put 30 points on their opposition on a weekly basis in Bartercard.
It would seem to me at the moment that the very motivated Kiwi juniors see the greatest opportunity to advance their league career lies in Australia, the ones who stay here seem to be the ones who are more worried about moving away from their families and are more happy with the status quo. It doesnt seem to me to be a good look that its our best and brightest who leave our systems, it should be our cast offs and players we do not view having a future in the game.
If the cost of airfares are the problem then base them in Aus, build a strong Warriors Premiere League team brand, give them a snappy name, design and sell some jerseys. These are strong minded succesful businessmen running our club, Im sure they can think of a way to get round this or have the vision to see the benefits in getting something like this up and running.
Once again I think that the Bartercard is an important part of NZ league but we need to be using it as feeder to a Warriors Premiere League squad not the Warriors first grade squad
