Those Kiwis aren't too keen to play for a NZ team aye.

Not getting back the majority of the big players from the original Warriors NRLW was a bit worrying.
Not luring really good Kiwi talent from other sides was not surprisingly, but I thought we'd do better.
A lack of succes swith NZ Rugby players is curious. I wonder if this has been encouraged by Union. "Yes, earn some money playing league, as long as it is not for our rugby audience competition in NZ - the Warriors?"

Ian Bourke is coming out of retirement to help Ron Griffiths with the Warriors NRLW side - but only attending all their games and giving advice to Griffiths based on that

I have heard that Mele Hufanga will be granted a release from her last year with the Broncos and will be coming over for this season.

Not exactly the half that the team still needs, but a great get nonetheless if it is true
Will she be playing in the halves though? She’s been in the centres at the broncos?

Maybe I didn’t word it best- Priority one needs to be getting a half, but here they are (potentially) signing a centre instead

Not to say Cappy isn’t trying to, or as a slight on Mele, but the team needed to sign a 7, like yesterday

The half this side needs is right here in NZ! Last year's NZ U18 Clubs & Linwood Keas', Lialanie (Binky) Muamua.

I still reckon the real one they should chase long term is Maia Davis. She was awesome in the halves in league.

I don't mind Lydia Turua-Quedley either. If the packs good enough and she gets a chance I reckon she'll suprise a lot of folks

Local product Avery-Rose Carmont has today been confirmed as the final signing for the Warriors’ return to the NRLW competition this season.

Out of the Ōtāhuhu Leopards, the 23-year-old hooker fills the last spot on the 24-strong roster as the Warriors prepare to assemble for preseason training ahead of their first NRLW campaign since 2000.

While securing Carmont for the top squad, Warriors NRLW head coach Ron Griffiths has also announced Aucklanders Sharnyze Pihema and Ivana Lautitiiti have been recruited on development contracts.

Both Carmont and Lauitiiti boast potent rugby league links.

Carmont’s father George had a decorated top-level career with the Newcastle Knights, the Wigan Warriors and Sāmoa while Lauitiiti’s father is the legendary Ali Lauitiiti who played more than 400 games for the One New Zealand Warriors, the Leeds Rhinos and the Wakefield Wildcats as well as representing the Kiwis and Sāmoa.

Griffiths said Carmont had been on the club’s radar for some time before being signed.

“Although Avery filled the last spot on the roster we had been in conversation with her and monitoring her performance since the middle of last year,” he said.

“When we arrived in Auckland we had the opportunity to watch her train for Ōtāhuhu and were impressed with her work ethic.

“We invited her to attend training with the NRLW players we had in Auckland and she was happy to volunteer her time.

“Avery fitted in with the squad and looked comfortable and has been rewarded with an opportunity to represent the Warriors.”

Secured on a one-year contract, Carmont has represented the Auckland Vulcans helping them to win the national women’s premiership for the first time in 2023.

“I was lucky enough to be invited to a few of the Warriors’ trainings by Ron while still in preseason for local club footy,” she said.

“I was excited at the opportunity to get a feel of what it was like training in a professional environment and took the opportunity with both hands to get as many learnings out of it as I could.

“Ron then approached me for a cup of coffee and I thought it was to give some feedback about how I had been training … no intentions of signing whatsoever.

“While chatting he offered me a one-year deal, catching me completely by surprise.

“It still feels surreal to be in the team but I’m so grateful to even be considered.

“We’ve struggled for pathways in New Zealand so for Ron to choose a local girl who still has so much learning to do is crazy but hopefully it motivates more ladies to stay home (in New Zealand) and trust their talent will be noticed.

“I just want to get in there, work hard and grow my game as much as I can.”

As well as representing the Auckland Vulcans, Carmont was selected in the Fetu Sāmoa squad for the 2023 Pacific Championships.

Griffiths said development players Pihema and Lauitiiti have much to offer.

“Sharnyze is a talented player who has a big future,” he said.

“She’s a robust ball-running back rower who has immaculate timing in defence.

“Ivana is a powerful middle who is talented on both sides of the ball. A defensive powerhouse with subtle offloading skills.”

The Warriors start their 2025 NRLW season against the star-studded Roosters at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Sunday, July 6.

First contract extension for the team

Atai's contract extended until 2027 season

Impressive One New Zealand Warriors back row forward Kaiyah Atai has been secured on an extended contract to the end of the 2027 NRLW season.

The 23-year-old will make her seventh consecutive start in the Warriors’ historic Indigenous Round clash against the Canberra Raiders at FMG Stadium Waikato/Home of the Tainui People in Hamilton/Kirikiriroa on Saturday (7.15pm kick-off).

Signed straight out of Auckland football, NRLW rookie Atai has been one of the Warriors’ success stories across the first six rounds impressing with her endurance and work rate.

On the back of her form the club has taken up an option in her contract for next season and extended it by another year.

Head coach Ron Griffiths was immediately impressed by what he saw of Atai playing in the Auckland club competition and for the Akarana Falcons last year.

“We are pleased to have Kaiyah recommit to the club,” said Griffiths.

“A local Richmond Roses product, her contract extension has come through her effort and her exemplary attitude.”

Atai has played the full 70 minutes in each of the Warriors’ six games so far, standing out as the team’s busiest defender with 147 tackles, an average of 24.5 a game.

“Kaiyah impressed us so much with the way she had prepared herself for the preseason,” said One New Zealand Warriors NRLW manager Nadene Conlon.

“She richly deserves this contract extension while she’s also an inspiration for local players, showing what can be achieved coming through the game at domestic level.”

A member of the national championship-winning Akarana Falcons last year, Atai was named the New Zealand Rugby League’s 2024 domestic women’s player of the year and went on to again represent the Cook Islands in the Pacific Championships.

Her whole family is in Auckland. So hopefully she's here for the long run and also helps to develop young upcoming players in a few years time.

I think her cousin will be a beast in 5 years time if she gets some height during her teenage years.

As I am starting to slowly know who these players actually are, apart from the easy ones, of the totally new Wahine this is a player that really stands out.

Good being able to say that about someone you know nothing about and are judging purely on what you have seen in action, especially when there are so many you can't tell apart on field, your judgement therefore is pure.

Hard running, hard hitting a genuine footballer, great move and she is a machine for work, still young.,

Long term should be chasing hard for Maia Davis for 7 or even fullback. Currently with the 7s team but gun league player too.
