Interesting!! - Did not realise that the warriors had signed Phillip Makatoa. He is SBW cousin and is a pretty talented kid. Not seen a lot of him but heard he has a lot of similar traits to SBW.

Unfortunately he was just not that good. He struggled even in the U20's.

Still can't believe they selected him in a first grade trial as an 18 year old a couple years ago. One of the most bizzare developmental moves this club has made in recent years. Especially for a club that has done well recently with the development of Hingano and Papalli, and are on the right track with HarrisTavita, Perham, Soosemea etc.
'Bizarre developmental moves'??? Mate that's a bit harsh. You need to do your research on this kid first. In the Junior Warriors 2016 & 2017 season this kid was the Warriors top points scorer not just because of his kicking ability but mainly because he was in their top 3 try scorers. He was also in the top 10 stats overall for the whole of the 2016 NYC year, not bad when you have approx 460 + junior players in the comp so there must be something there. Oddly enough the trial you were referring to which was at Toll Stadium, Whangarei against Gold Coast - I think he only got on for the last 5 or so minutes however he managed to make a break & set up a try?? The problem with the Warriors development is they restrict kids from using their natural talents & then ruin them by thinking they know best and try and play them in different positions. It doesn't help either when they keep throwing 17 yr olds week in week out to play against 20 yr olds, now that's what I call a 'Bizarre development move'. Inside word from last years U20's Coach Grant Pocklington was that these players were not up to it physically and especially mentally. The stress on their more senior players in the squad like Chris Sio, Kane Telea, Chanel Harris-Tavita, Lewis Soosemea, & Kenese Kenese was starting to take it's toll midway through the season. Warriors need to take care of their players alot better, simple as that.

Word from players was Grant Pocklington wasn't up to coaching at that level. He was almost completely bagged by the whole NYC squad in the end of year reviews...

Lets be honest, the kid was hyped up on this forum but ended up being well below average. Before he even played a game people on here were saying he would be better than Brad Abbey which was a terrible call. Show me something that says Kane Telea was in the top 10 in the competition in anything. The warriors U20 were trash in both 2016 and 2017 and I remember Kane Telea being a big part of that, so I very much doubt the stats you're throwing out here.

The problem with that U20's team was definitely not the younger players. It was the senior players. The likes of the names you mentioned; Kane Telea, Chris Sio and Kenese Kenese. None of them were even up to U20's level. Hence why none of them are with the club now. Adding to the issue was that the coach had no clue what he was doing. I don't doubt that Pocklington has talent as a coach but the inside word was that he had no experience in a developmental role and didn't know how to bring these kids along.

I think our club has by far the most talented group of players born in 1998/1999 than any club in the NRL, including the likes of Chanel Harris Tavita, Lewis Soosemea, Joseph Vuna, Preston Riki, Israel Ogden and Tyler Slade who were all young players on those terrible U20's teams, so the issues definitely did not come from them

Gritty defence earns win over top-ranked side

A gritty second half defensive effort carried the Vodafone Junior Warriors to an outstanding 14-12 win over second-placed Penrith in today’s 18th-round Jersey Flegg Cup clash at QBE North Harbour Stadium in Auckland.

Despite the atrocious weather conditions, the Ricky Henry-coached side put together three tries to take an impressive 14-0 lead into the halftime break.

Loose forward Phillip Makatoa opened the scoring before centres Siave Tupou – on debut – and Casey Smith also snared four-pointers with Eiden Ackland supplying one conversion.

The second half turned into a defensive examination for the Vodafone Junior Warriors as the Panthers came out of the blocks fast, netting an early converted try to cut the margin to eight points at 6-14.

For a long period, the Vodafone Junior Warriors succeeded in preventing any further scoreboard damage only to be breached in the closing stages.

Leading just 14-12, the Vodafone Junior Warriors were then under siege in the dying moments but a Penrith error brought about relief and the ultimate glory of a key victory.

It was only the fourth win of the season, lifting them to 10th place on the ladder on 14 points.

Warriors have some very good props coming through. Been super impressed by Wesley Veikoso. Not a Nas type of Prop but built in the Fuifui Moimoi mold and super hard to put down. Could go on to NRL this kid as well. Think he has had a couple of runs in reserves this year as well?

Is this the hottest rugby prospect going around?

Siave Togoiu, the hottest prospect in Auckland and New Zealand rugby at the moment.

Siave Togoiu might just be one of the hottest rugby prospects in Auckland, if not New Zealand right now.

It took the Mangere 17-year-old, better known for his rugby league feats with national secondary school champions Southern Cross Campus, just one international sevens tournament to have agents, provinces and super rugby franchises beating a path to his door.

Auckland and the Blues, the teams the teenager confirmed he'll be playing for, were the first to court the winger. Waikato and the Chiefs also expressed an interest.

1485146876552.jpg

Siave Togoiu, right, with Junior Poluleuligaga, the coach of the Samoa schoolboy sevens team.

The frenzy erupted as Togoiu set alight the inaugural World Schools Sevens Championship at Sacred Heart College last weekend.

He had a sensational two days. He led Samoa to the finals where they lost to Australia 24-19 and was named player of the tournament.

Togoiu has been taken aback by all the attention.

"I'm surprised by all the attention. I never expected anything like this. I've been receiving calls from agents nearly every day since the tournament finished. All were prepared to sign me up, if I didn't already have a manager.

"It's exciting, I've always wanted to play professionally. This is my chance."

Togoiu hasn't put pen to paper yet but confirms that he will sign for Auckland and the Blues with whom he rubbed shoulders with at a training session at Manukau Rovers Rugby Club late last year.

He was seen in discussions with Tom Hanks, the Blues high performance manager, rubbed shoulders with Blues players and even got to talk to head coach and All Black great Tana Umaga.

The irony of it all is that Togoiu wasn't supposed to play in the tournament.

He and kid-brother Kakoi , the player of the tournament at the national secondary school rugby league championships, were roped into a make shift Samoa team just days before kickoff by Papatoetoe Rugby Club director of rugby Junior Poluleuligaga.

Poluleuligaga was asked to stitch a make shift team of Aucklanders together less than a week out from the tournament when Samoa couldn't send a team.

The rest is history as the scamble for Togoiu signature began before the tournament had ended.

Poluleuligaga, a former Samoa, Auckland and Blues halfback, says he has never seen such a frenzy before.

"Siave is the hottest rugby prospect in New Zealand right now. Everyone, from agents, provinces and Super 15 franchises want his signature.

"It's his speed, foot work and balance that sets him apart," he says.

But Siave says his first aim is just to crack the Auckland under-18s.

Have to say the Warriors may be entering soon into a true golden period with the junior talent they have signed up on the books. It really is the envy of the NRL and will grow even more so. The Warriors have two standout twin brother props on the books who already are giants at just 16 years old and have a very strong resemblence in their playing styles to the great Petero Civoniceva. They are simply awesome to watch taking turns smashing into the line. Watch out for these guys in future years to come - Vailingi Kepu and Otukinekina Kepu

Also Kakoi Togoiu is a gun! Big monster 2nd rower. looking at that Jersey Flegg side is insane!! so many players with enormous potential. Incredible crop of players coming through.

Had a look at the Oz secondary schools championships held over the past week and there was some real talent on show. Was awesome to see a couple of young fullas with kiwi heritage amongst the standouts, Star Toa who's at the Knights and Frankie Pele who's down at Cronulla. Wouldn't be surprised to see either of them pushing through to grade in the next couple of years.
