General Warriors Go Fishing For A Shark

THE New Zealand Warriors have launched a shock bid to poach Todd Carney, prompting moves from Cronulla to extend his contract before the season starts.
News Limited can reveal Warriors coach Matt Elliott met Carney and his representatives in Auckland last month.
St George Illawarra is also believed to be in contention for the 26-year-old, who has spent the off-season on the comeback trail from an achilles tendon tear.

Elliott, however, has an inside running for Carney's services from their time together in Canberra.

Although they left the ACT behind long ago, the pair remained in contact and Elliott unsuccessfully tried to lure Carney to Penrith in 2008.Appointed Warriors coach in November, he was quick to take advantage of Carney visiting Auckland for the Fight for Life charity boxing event on December 15.

Carney crossed the ditch to support girlfriend Lauryn Eagle and Sharks skipper Paul Gallen - who were both in action on the star-studded card.

But he also met with Elliott over the same weekend, with the Warriors in the market for a top-level pivot to partner young gun Shaun Johnson in the halves in 2014.

Thomas Leluiai and Harry Siejka have been recruited to fill the void left by James Maloney, who has joined the Roosters this season.

Elliott did not return phone calls yesterday.

However, Sharks coach Shane Flanagan said last night he was aware of New Zealand's interest and revealed a three-year offer had already been tabled to the NSW Origin pivot.

"We put an offer to Todd about three or four weeks ago and we're confident he will stay with us," Flanagan said.

"He's got everything in order since coming here, and it's fair to say he's been out of the papers for a little bit.

"He was also playing some great football before his injury. Todd and his manager have indicated they'd like to finalise something before the season starts, so I'd be very, very surprised if it's not sorted out by then."

Given he's now settled in a steady relationship with Eagle, it would take a special offer for Carney to shift too far from the Shire.

Based a short drive down the Bulli Pass, St George Illawarra would be a valid option - depending on whether the Dragons decide to extend Jamie Soward's contract beyond next year.

Parramatta could also come into calculations, given Eels coach Ricky Stuart is short on five-eighth options to link with Chris Sandow at the scrumbase.

Flanagan said he had no fears in offering Carney a new deal before his return to football, which might not arrive until Round One.
"When he comes back, the achilles will be as strong as ever," Flanagan said.

"It's also an injury that very rarely happens twice.

"He's just got to follow the right recovery process and we won't be playing him until he's 110 per cent right.

"If he's not ready for Round One then we won't risk him."

Cronulla also has Ben Ross, Nathan Gardner, and Anthony Tupou coming off-contract.

saw an article that Matt Elliot has met with Todd carney and looking to sign him to the Warriors.

Mate Loving that Carney would be the perfect replacement for Maloney.

I'm voting Yes for that.

I posted in the other tread that i thought Carney was the next captain ( should have read properly re 2014 not 2013 )

It has no bearing then unless they appointed an interim for a year.....but thats clutching at straws.

I am a little on the fence with this one. carney has skill but cant play under pressure. Being away from they sydney spotlight could really see the best in him as he can focus more on footy.

even if it doesnt happen i like that this has been leaked. More so it could serve as a good rocket up Shaun Johnson that he needs to perform or we start looking else where for a marquee half.

Wouldn't put much faith in what Scurrah has to say but I'd probably put the Herald a peg or or two above the DT on the credibility ladder, and with Scurrah being the master media manipulator I wouldn't be suprised if Carney's the smoke screen for another target!

Not one to have ever read Australian (especially Sydney) papers before, I was given a short sharp crash course in the BS drivel they spit during the whole Sheens/Flanagan/Kearney/Bellamy/Kidwell/Cleary's dog/ME new Warriors coaching saga. I dont believe a word of it. For all we know they just had a drink reminiscing about old days then some useless poor excuse for a journalist went straight from dot 1 to 100 without doing the necessary work in between. Whatever the case, I just dont see Carney coming over. If he's smart and he did have an informal meeting with ME then he's probably doing a Matai!

After reading several articles on the same story it does seem like this DID actually take place. The language used in this threads article leaves little doubt in my mind that Carney and his reps met with ME. Even the quote from Sharks coach Shane Flanagan states that he 'is aware of the Warriors offer'.

Either the article is rubbish, Scurrah is lying or he's been lied to?!?

I think that of the 3 options you have outlined above, I am most drawn to Scurrah lying as the most likely, as past history has shown us it is a hobby he enjoys.

Id like to see Manu in the backrow sooner rather later,Need a wrecking ball amongst our tacklebots.I think Big Ben and Feleti would appreciate someone else who has destructive go forward?.Other teams have wrecking balls

Penrith now has Sika Manu,G.C has Dave Taylor,Doggies have T-Rex and the Tank,Tigers have Pettybourne,we can have Manu and Feleti?

Putting aside all the talk Carney would be a great purchase for this club I admire his league skills, on paper it's All Stars halves material 6.Todd Carney 7.Shaun Johnson...class halves steer teams to premierships no doubt to me that would be a great halves combination but I'm content with Leuluai,Godinet & Siejka for now.

.sorry, but Shaun Johnson and carney in the halves together would be a disaster. two players who drift in and out of games, creative but cant control a match. they both need a solid half with them to do the contolling around the park while they puck and choose thier moments. a big no from me for signing carney. we have other issues like another quality outside back.

An annoying part about having Marquee Australians in a Warriors team, is that if the Warriors won the premiership the Goulds and Warrens would credit it all to a Carney / Matt Elliot.

However most of us couldn't at the end of the day give a toss if it meant winning a title.

I digress.....

By your logic if we did sign Carney then his selection would be V Johnson to pair Leiuluai ( I realise your not asking for that dilemma ) ......but if it were to come to pass would that not be a primo challenge laid down to both players to be the Master ?

It might just fix both players if they are set against one another to make first grade.......or not.....

This would be the time to do it. After psyching yourself up for boxing , a switch to the forwards in a league game is a cake walk

possibly, but it would leave a lot of cap space and talent playing vulcans for that challenge to happen.
