Head coach Matthew Elliott has included a mix of NRL experience, NYC-eligible players, some who have been on trial and a 2012 Auckland Vulcans regular for Saturday’s opening 2013 trial against the Gold Coast Titans at Pizzey Park, Burleigh Heads (5.15pm kick-off local time). Photo: Photosport.
In naming his first team as Vodafone Warriors head coach, Elliott has named prop Steve Rapira as captain in a line-up including new signings Dominique Peyroux and Harry Siejka.
For Auckland-born and raised Peyroux (24), the match will be a homecoming of sorts. The centre-winger was signed in early November after 16 NRL appearances for the Titans in 2011-2012.
Apart from Peyroux – named to play in the centres – Rapira and former Penrith half Siejka, other players with NRL experience selected are Carlos Tuimavave, Glen Fisiiahi, Pita Godinet, Alehana Mara, Sam Lousi, Sebastine Ikahihifo, Sione Lousi and Konrad Hurrell.
The Vodafone Warriors’ most experienced players are all being set for the following trials against Penrith in Hamilton on Saturday, February 16 (4.00pm kick-off) and Brisbane in Dunedin on Saturday, February 23 (7.30pm kick-off). Three of them – Feleti Mateo, Shaun Johnson and Dane Nielsen – are all playing in Saturday night’s fourth annual NRL All Stars v Indigenous All Stars season-opener at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
“This trial is so important for us, as every trial is,” said Elliott.
“In this case it’s an opportunity for us to use our wider squad, to have a look at not just some established members of our group but to also expose some players who are still eligible to play for the Vodafone Junior Warriors in the NYC and players who have been on trial over the summer.”
Elliott also highlighted the selection of Auckland Vulcans utility Aaron Nootai on the bench.
Tuimavave starts at fullback, where he finished the 2012 NRL season, while eight-game Vodafone Warrior Glen Fisiiahi is on the wing. Fisiiahi was a Vulcans regular last year as was Godinet, who’s paired in the halves with Siejka (21), who featured for Penrith in each of the NYC’s first five seasons.
Players still eligible for the Vodafone Junior Warriors named in the squad are Ngani Laumape, David Fusitua, Siliva Havili, Trent Bishop and David Bhana while offseason trialists Suaia Matagi, Atelea Nafetalai, 2011-2012 Vodafone Junior Warrior Nathaniel Peteru and ex-Penrith NYC outside back Malakai Watene-Zelezniak are also named.

Wish I was still living on the GC, would be very interested in seeing some of these guys get a run. Happy to see Peyroux start at centre, as well as Konrad off the bench. A few people getting their wish with Matagi getting a start at prop. And thankfully the Fish gets handed a chance on the wing. The club has definitely stuck to it's word in playing a second string team.

Who's going to be at this game to fill out a report card? ;)

22 CARLOS TUIMAVAVE - interesting. Perhaps Carlos is seen as our possible 2ic for fullback.
2 GLEN FISIIAHI - prepare for a jizz-storm. Can he perform well enough to unseat the peoples' favourite winger, Billy Tupou?
3 DOMINIQUE PEYROUX
4 MALAKAI WATENE-ZELEZNIAK
26 NGANI LAUMAPE
6 PITA GODIENT - related to Pita Godinet, I assume.
27 HARRY SIEJKA
8 STEVE RAPIRA (c) - interesting to see Steve named as PROP and captain. Noone has been naming him in their starting teams, but perhaps he will indeed sneak in as Packer's replacement.
25 ALEHANA MARA
10 SUAIA MATAGI - this is the guy who interests me the most for this team. I'm hoping he has a ripsnorter preseason and makes the round 1 team.

Nice looking team imo. I'm glad to see Fish getting an early start on the wing and Siejka and Godinet getting a run in the halves. Happy to see Mara at hooker too, lets hope he plays well.

Really exited to see how this team named does, although I realize it's only a trial.

the excitement of tuesday has come around for 2013.

Im interested to see how Konrad's fitness is. This will be his determing factor to how many first grade games he plays this year.

I have the feeling that young carlos may be named at FB but i think he will slip into a few different spots to see where he fits best.

TBH without injuries, none of those players are in my starting 17. With the injuries I have Hurrell and Carlos...

That's okay I reckon. New coach, a host of new players...happy to let these guys have a shot for a trial. One of our biggest gripes over the past couple of years has been the lack of depth at centre and wing, so I'm happy to let them trial as many as they want there. Obviously difficult to read into anything in a first up trial, but I wonder whether Carlos starting at FB and Fish on the wing indicates Carlos is #2 fullback at the club? Happy for that to be so...but I'd be interested in seeing the other positions Carlos is trialled in.

Highlights for me are fish and laumape on the wings- laumape is a future first grader IMO and good to see we are looking at our options on the wing- an obvious weakness for us. Also Mara and ikahihifo starting- 2 personal favs, both need to take their chances in the trials- looking forward to seeing them play.

Harry is in my team, we need 2 people with better than good kicking games in the team, a bit shocked not to see Taylor in the team, he might have it sewn up already.
Have the club decided to persevere with Tuimavave at FB until the D is up to scratch, to be moved somewhere else in the near future? Couldn't have him in my team unless Locke and Fish go down, he makes Harry look like Friend.
After 18 years we finally have a long term spine, but there could be any one of 8 players in it, crazy

The thing Im most happiest about is the apparent shift of Glass to the wing. His defensive reads leave him as a liability at FB. Carlos would do better at FB than Glass IMO. I actually see Carlos as being abit of a Hohaia 'Mr Fixit' type. Not sure he'd like that but he can cover so many positions and unlike Lance can actually jump in the 2nd row.

Glad to see Matagi get a run. Hope he grabs this opportunity and shows ME what he's made of. Seems Steve Rapira is the prop in waiting at the moment. Captain too? Wonder how that happened? Of all the boys on that team he does have the most experiance and NRL gametime.

Also like Sebastine Ikahihifo. Got my eye on that kid. He may just make it to the first grade. Not as big as Sam Lousi but just as powerful and with alot more ball play and footwork skills...

Congrats to the bro Atelea Nafetalai finally going to crack it into the big time.
Same here bro. After all this time he's finally starting to fulfill his potential. How long has the Panama Rd rumour mill been going on about Ate being scouted for the Dragons or Knights or whoever. Thought he was also meant to trial for another NRL team but Im not too sure. He's a solid player and I wish him all the best. I know he'll just unleash once the whistle goes...

Yeah it's a fair rap for Carlos to be named at fullback, it shows how highly the club thinks of him talent wise, and his much improved attitude from his time in the 20's.....I just hope he doesn't get stuck with the dreaded utility label, as i definitely see him as a real right center prospect.

Totally agree. From the little I've seen of him, I think he has huge potential.

Haha, I hope Laumape's attitude towards the Warriors has changed dramatically since he first came here.

Mostly being a smartass, but he has indeed played 4 games of first grade already. I thought Sebastine looked promising. Perhaps lacking a physical presence, but seemed eager for work and wasn't intimidated. And yes, he has far better footwork than your average second rower. Perhaps he could go to Penrith and become a centre... ha.

It can be a blessing and a curse to have such versatility as Carlos brings. On one hand, he strikes me as a Joel Moon-style centre with better vision and a cooler head. But he's THAT adaptable that whenever a fullback or half goes down he will be high on the list to replace them. Carlos is pretty much guaranteed a career of being juggled around various positions. Hohaia did pretty well with this, and every team needs a good utility in my opinion.

Steve Rapira, really !!

i thought it was a mis print and should have been Sammy.

Steve in my opinion will spend the entire season in the Vulcans. Did nothing last year to show me otherwise.

Hopefully then after seeing this team, more of the first team will play in Hamilton next Saturday when im there !!

any profiles on these guys, read on here to expect big things but i havent seen them or no much about them yet.

SUAIA MATAGI
ATELEA NAFETALAI

Very Interesting team,be good for all of these guys to get some game time and show what they got
