AUSTRALIA will play a Tri-Nations Test against New Zealand at Telstra Dome, Melbourne, in late October.
The Australia Rugby League (ARL) has recommended the match between last year's Tri-Nations finalists be played in Melbourne after stronger than expected ticket sales for the third State of Origin match at Telstra Dome on July 5.
Should the recommendation be ratified by the Tri-Nations tournament committee, it will be the first rugby league international staged in Victoria since Great Britain thrashed Australia 33-10 at Princes Park in 1992.
"We have looked at submissions from stadia across the country and we have given Telstra Dome the nod," ARL chief Geoff Carr said last night.
"It is yet to be ratified, but we are confident the match could be really successful in Melbourne.
"Australia has long been regarded as the best team in the world, and New Zealand is the defending Tri-Nations champion.
"Given Victoria's love of major sporting events and the large Kiwi community there, we think it is a very good fit."
The decision continues a major push by the code's power-brokers to bring elite level rugby league to Melbourne.
Despite strong criticism from Queensland and New South Wales, the third and potentially deciding match of this year's Origin series will be played at Telstra Dome.
Carr said more than 6000 tickets had already been sold for the game.
"We are really happy with sales given there has been no real promotion of the game yet," Carr said.
"We will hold off in that regard until after the Commonwealth Games and Grand Prix, but there will be plenty happening in the build-up to the game."
