General Time For A New Captain?

Far Away Fan

So here we were, round 10 approaches, 2 wins from 9 so far. The Warriors look to be settling once more into a depressingly familiar pattern of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

What I would like our captain to do is to inspire, to give the team a few choice words when the team needs it. I'm tired of seeing one of the trainers have to do this while our captain stands meekly at the back of the team, seemingly unable to say anything.

In my view, putting in a lot of metres and tackles and being able to handle press conferences isn't sufficient qualification for the captaincy. We need someone with verve, who when you see him on the pitch oozes grit and determination. In my opinion, this man isn't Simon Mannering.

It would be wrong to blame him for the current situation, but it is a fact that he has been captain throughout the team's fall from the heights of 2011's finals run. I believe that he's not inspiring the team when he needs to and that that's part of the problem.

Who am I suggesting should replace him? Nathan Friend. With his body, although we hope he will, he may not last beyond this season. He's here this year though and that's what's important. He has grit, he has determination, he has great skills, etc, etc - everyone admires him. He'd use his voice when he needs to.

In the future, Ben Henry could well be the one, but he's only 22 at the moment. Too young.

I'm sure there'll be other suggestions.

But I think it has to happen now.

I think the sooner Benry gets it the better. I remember watching the U20s GF when he had to sit it out and seeing his teammates wanting to celebrate the win with him. He was clearly an inspirational leader who the team wanted to please.

Perhaps it isn't such a good idea to dump the captain unless he is going to be dropped from the team. Maybe a joint captaincy deal like other teams are going with these days would work better. Have something like Mannering, Friend and Benry as co-captains. Mannering can talk to refs, Friend can yell at the boys and Benry can play the inspiration while he develops his leadership skills.

If we were to change captain I'd probably go with an experienced player like Leuluai or Packer, Sam Rapira did a capable job even though it was in his own silent way

I'm fairly certain giving the captaincy to Mateo would help up his game and make him a more consistent player heck even Shaun Johnson is the inspirational type who the players admire when he's doing his job correct, charismatic and well spoken, he could be an option

I doubt that changing the captain will change anything concerning who actually leads the team. If Friend and co are the leaders we all envision them to be, not having the letter C next to their name on the team list shouldn't have an impact on their roles as a leader. It certainly didn't have an impact on Luck or Wiki's influence so I see no reason as to why it should do anything to Friend etc, now. So, no, I don't think its the time to change captains.

Cool idea for a thread though...

No, He captained us to the grand final and is highly regarded by most. It isn't solely up to the captain to rant and rave everytime something nee (if tds to be said. There is a senior leadership group and I don't see any of them laying it down to the team in the in goal. What we need is everyone to take some personal responsibility and do their job. I would rather see more intense training situations where the guys are forced to make decisions under fatigue(if that isnt already happening). Maybe split them into two groups and do skill based competitions at the end of training. the winners get to do cool downs and recovery, the losers get a half hour wiki specail then put all the gear away. learn to pull out whatever it takes to win or have to feel the burn. So, no, keep Mannering, at least for this season

I think he has other things on his mind.

Kava?

I honestly don't think we will gain anything by changing captains right and honesty believe it will do the exact opposite of what we want. It would be counter productive and be too unsettling.

At the end of the day if Elliott wants Mannering to be more vocal then he has to make it clear to him.

There us always an option to change it up next year. Personally I'd like to see a co-captaincy role within the team. One could even be started now. It would definitely save face if their was a real need to change the captain...

Mannering is who we have and until there is someone else who is clearly head and shoulders above everyone else in the running to replace him he should stay captain. Captains who have stood in for him haven't done well and replacing him just for the sake of change will cause a heap of disruption within the team. Yes, maybe we need someone to put the hard word on behind the posts and ME could work on that if he has someone that the team respect and will listen to.

How can putting the letter C next to someone's name *not* have an impact on their role as leader?

Watching that last press conference ( the one after Mannering gave away insane turn over ball ) he has a weird ( incongruent ) grin going on.....you might describe it as sheepish.

It is irritating at best , signs of fraying around the edges at worse.

The cracks are showing. I actually feel sorry for Mannering these days.

I bet taking the Captaincy off him would prove a huge relief for Mannering when he sits down to watch a bit of telly at night.

Mannering will be a one club player so for me he stays has captain, benrey just has to bide his time he is the future of this club he has all the right attributes for a great captain. but needs a few years before been given the reins

The letter "C" being captaincy.

I think that if Friend or anyone of the leadership were to make a difference to the club's current situation solely through their leadership qualities, they'd have already be doing it by now, regardless of whether they are the official captains or not. Similar to how Luck was a leader on the field despite Mannering being the captain, or Wiki being a leader during the time when Price was the captain.

Elliot is fucking up and looking for excuses in all the wrong places now...if he carries on down this road, there will be a new Coach soon..The thing with Simon is he is a decent player, but the Captaincy is holding him back placing too much pressure on him and he is not an 80 minute forward that is why he gives up stupid penalties, fatigue, Lowrie also fatigues and gives up stupid penalties, that's why he was averaging 45-50 minutes at the Storm. Bellamy uses players effectively with the talents they have, that is why the structure is paramount at the Storm because structure allows the guns to do what they do best.

Is Mannering simply to paranoid about being penalised/binned for talking to the refs? I mean, obviously he can't quote Gorden Tallis and get away with it, but an occasional question or pointing out that that tackle looked high or late surely isn't going to upset the officials that much, is it?

I have banged on about this before but whoever is Captain is being undermined by the Waterboy giving team instructions. That info should go to Simon and he passes it on. At the moment there are 2 voices on the field. Mannering, and the other senior players do not get a chance to impose themselves on the team because of that.
