So here we were, round 10 approaches, 2 wins from 9 so far. The Warriors look to be settling once more into a depressingly familiar pattern of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
What I would like our captain to do is to inspire, to give the team a few choice words when the team needs it. I'm tired of seeing one of the trainers have to do this while our captain stands meekly at the back of the team, seemingly unable to say anything.
In my view, putting in a lot of metres and tackles and being able to handle press conferences isn't sufficient qualification for the captaincy. We need someone with verve, who when you see him on the pitch oozes grit and determination. In my opinion, this man isn't Simon Mannering.
It would be wrong to blame him for the current situation, but it is a fact that he has been captain throughout the team's fall from the heights of 2011's finals run. I believe that he's not inspiring the team when he needs to and that that's part of the problem.
Who am I suggesting should replace him? Nathan Friend. With his body, although we hope he will, he may not last beyond this season. He's here this year though and that's what's important. He has grit, he has determination, he has great skills, etc, etc - everyone admires him. He'd use his voice when he needs to.
In the future, Ben Henry could well be the one, but he's only 22 at the moment. Too young.
I'm sure there'll be other suggestions.
But I think it has to happen now.
