So, a season of some redemption in 2018. While there were still reservations about whether Kearney was the right man for the job or whether he was better suited to the one off type games in charge of the Kiwis, he managed to take the team within one game off the top 4 and equal top of the table with the minor premiers. And that despite several controversial decisions during the season that potentially cost us points. The team were playing a good style, defensively fairly solid, a forward pack that for the most part held their own and winning away on the road consistently. And who could forget the breathing circle! What happened to that? May have been gimmicky, may have been real, whatever it was it seemed to focus the boys, yet disappeared in a puff of, well, breath, never to be seen again…… We actually seemed to be rebuilding, putting some really good people in the right positions, providing actual structure to the club, a planned return to our original playing colours with much excitement from the fans.

Things certainly looking promising for the future.

So it seemed.

That is about where it all fell over. Getting rid of your star halfback prior to Christmas with no replacement and losing all of the attacking potential with it was never going to end well. And while Shaun Johnson may not have been the answer to all of the teams problems, I wonder if the club actually understood what the question was in the first place.

I could go over the 2019 season, but really apart from the post-SJ first round false dawn thrashing of the Bulldogs it was back to the same ol’ same ol’ for the fans and the club. Perhaps Simon Mannering, despite being on the obvious decline, may also have been the glue of professionalism that now seemed missing that resulted in everything becoming unstuck.

Which leads, obviously, to the 2020 season, and whether we can expect much different from this year.

The ARL have gone, they didn’t last long and I’m quite thankful for that. Stick to what you are supposed to be doing, growing and developing the game at the grass roots level, and supporting the clubs under your umbrella. While The Warriors should assist in some form and partner with the ARL (and what remains of the other league bodies in the country) the grass roots is where the ARL should be focused, not in ownership of the one professional League club in the country. I have always said that there is to much conflict of interest there. I also think that anybody using other peoples money seem to have less regard for it, just a personal opinion. So, I think that having a sole private owner in Autex is a good thing, well, a better thing than having the ARL involved in the club. Some might say anything is better than that!

While I felt that Brian Smith was a good pick up for the club, he was involved in letting our key playmaker go without a back up plan. So, I guess overall I’m not fussed either way that he is gone.

Alex Corvo. The man given credit for making us the fittest we have been for as long as I can recall. Apparently not all is as it seemed though. Or was it? Who do you believe? Who can you believe? So many conflicting stories. He was great. He was old fashioned with out dated training methods. Who knows? Regardless, the players have one less excuse for poor performance now don’t they?

Cameron George, the CEO. I don’t think he has done a bad job actually. The club has bought in a number of new initiative this year that were only let down by on field performances. Could he do better at not crossing over in to the coaches domain? Probably. But, he is the CEO, his choice.

Stephen Kearney. Love him or hate him, he is the coach this next season, or at least for 6 rounds of it. Still makes some incredibly baffling selection decisions and interchanges. I cant see that being any different. His man love for certain players is as confusing as it is disappointing to me. What I do know is that the first few games of the 2018 season were the blueprint for me for this team. Three biggish forwards and a dynamic utility hooker on the bench, a number 13 that was basically a mobile prop forward and control possession. I admire a player like Jazz with his heart but I’m sorry, he doesn’t actually fit anywhere in that blueprint. Unfortunately, I don’t think SK will have it any other way but stick to his standard favourites.

Those of you waiting for a big signing in the off season are going to be disappointed. With most of the 30 pretty much determined it will be unlikely that anyone of any significance will sign with the club (or want to). I would be interested to see how much space we actually have under our cap. I don’t think it would be as much as some may think.

At least we have a new sponsor in Swanndri :D But seriously, what is up with that monstrosity? At least there is some reassurance that we will start to have some continuity of identity moving forward. Check these out for comparison, despite not being up to date they sum up visually what most supporters are saying.

Having said all that, for me there are still some small glimmers of hope for 2020.

I like the signing of Wade Egan. Assuming he is and stays injury free then he will be really good for us. Of course he (and our halves) cant play well on the back foot, the forward pack will have to return to the sort of form it had in the beginning of the 2018 season – that’s a big ask particularly without us signing any decent forward of note that adds size and playing minutes to the current. I would love to see Egan start and have Lawton on the bench who can cover a number of positions and also provides that spark against tiring defences. And sorry, no room for Jazz apart from in reserve grade. I’m not sure how our halves will line up but Kodi will definitely be one of them. CHT, who will be much better for the experience this season, and Green may be played on a horse for course approach. We still have a lot of strike power particularly in our back three with RTS, Kenny and hopefully a fit again Fusitua.

So when you look at what we do have, there is that glimmer, that little spark of hope from memories of the odd good year of seasons past…….

But sorry folks, the reality side of me overrules that and says that SK will continue on his stubborn way and that this next season, while there will be undoubtedly some highlights, will ultimately be at best a season of rebuilding (yes again). Likely to finish scrapping it out for 9th – 12th place. If everything goes well and we get a bit of luck, maybe squeak in to 8th. Conversely we could very easily end up in the bottom 4 with a new coach mid season.

My team for round 1 next season assuming all fit and healthy and I haven't missed anyone obvious.....

RTS
Fusitua
Beale
Hiku
Maumalo
Nikorima
Green/CHT
Paasi
Egan
Ah Mau
Pulu
Harris
Blair

Lawton
Papali’I
Afoa
Burr

My time invested in this team will probably correlate closely with how they perform. I’m ‘All in’ if they are ‘All in’ But I cant see them turning around this season to any significant degree that will warrant me putting much in to The Warriors 2020. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think I am.

Given our lack of filling SJ and Isaacs key positions, not signing a coach focussed on offense (ie how we get over the stripe with so much red zone position), a CEO who is hell bent on messing with the team and signing off on el cheapo players not using the cap to buy quality players.

I think we will do well not to win the Spoon (for the first time?).

If some how we get a quality 9 and a 5/8th and an offensive specialist coach to help SK with his Process focussed mind, if the players truely value us paying fans and they take this "All In" accountability serious, then Id say top 4.

Pretty much agree with your team. But if Kodi doesnt produce consistently within the first month, Hayze Perham takes his spot, he cant do worse than Kodi.

My big concern is fitness. This blaming our players dis interest and lazyness on Corvo who made our 2018 look 3x fitter than any other team for 8 weeks, is just BS and the players wanting to go back to putting their feet up sucking up our money.

Yup, we're only a 6 and 9 away from matching the top teams.

His man love for certain players is as confusing as it is disappointing to me.
That and his inability to coach offense. Yes he is definitely more a National coach than a 24 rounds coach. He is TOO relaxed which makes the players lazy. We need a Toovey sort or Sticky throwing chairs at the wall when we are giving 50% at half time. Its one piece of why we will never be a consistent top 4 team.

The whole Kata thing did my head in. Why on earth CNK wasnt given a go then I will never know. The most intense player in the club alongside RTS on game day, with the talent to go with it, can play multiple position including obviously being a heck of a back up FB to RTS. SK doesnt play him and George just lets him go. Nobody could see what the fans and clearly other clubs could? We must have one hell of a seperation between 2nd grade and 1st. Clearly SK wasnt paying attention to 2nd grade or just didnt care.

I predict Hayze Perham will be the next CNK for the Warriors. Just when we need a quality 5/8th, not this rubbish Kodi plays.

I also predict all these el cheapo signings George was after will drive us to fighting off the wooden spoon.

I predict if the new owners are really watching hands on, they will sack SK and Boy George, put Brown in as care taker until we can attract a quality signing.

We may have had a chance at Cleary and Nat Cleary along with James Maloney who is headded to the UK. That would have been a hell of a signing from Penrith who are flailing, so we go and buy their very average hooker.

Yup, we're only a 6 and 9 away from matching the top teams
I said quality offensive coach, the players buying into the All In accountability. Those along with a quality spine signings are a major difference between making the 8 or 4.

Love your post Inruin. I agree on Egan, he could be the organising dummy half we need. Tohu should be firing on all cylinders and am hoping he can make a good pairing with CHT. Pulu finding 2018 form would be great but I am doubtful we are covered to some extent with some promise coming through the 2nd row with Katoa and Curran.

Still missing the Leader Prop, plenty of good kiwi props in the NRL so hope we can unearth another one because signing one seems unlikely.

We sign a Silverback at front row and we are all gonna get excited but even if that doesnt happen still some things to look forward too.

Seriously we have been saying about signing a marquee prop for the past 6 years. We have not had a proper pack leader since the Price/ Wiki days or at least since the Packer/ Matalino/ Rapera/ Lillyman combo were firing around 2011.

Our lack of forward dominance had directly impacted our results over the past 8 years.

We have been linked to plenty of props lately that never happen. Why can we not sign a dominant prop???

If anyone can't see that the "All In" video extravanganzas are the club's way of distracting fans from the real mess it's in then they are kidding themselves.
The truth is Kearney and George have constructed a club no one wants to come to.
They know it but will milk whatever $$$ they can before they are booted through the exit door. Hopefully sooner than round 6.
The only reason I am not tipping the spoon is because we always seem to manufacture a way to avoid it. Doesn't change the fact the club is in the most embarrassing position it's been in since 1995.

I went 12th to 15th.
Could end up a bit higher- could also find ourselves with the dreaded spoon which would be disastrous.

Ftr this is the way Sportsbet sees it...

$41 minor premiership.
$7.50 top 4.
$3.25 top 8.
$7 for the spoon.

You are onto it. I really hope Robinson sees what we all see and does it. Id rather rip the plaster off now than wait till end of year and another season gone, along with you can recover from 1/6. :)

I thought our Props were pretty good, Passi, Afoa, Ah Mau, of those only Ah Mau is prob considered close to a silver back Burr and Lisone would be our biggest concerns On forwards think Harris has been a big disappointment, much like all forwards who join the Warriors it seems. We do need some more size I will admit. But the modern 2nd rower is an 80 minute player who eats metres and is often over 40tackles. I dont think many of our second rowers fit that bill.

4 of them are kiwis and 3 of those came up through the Warriors. Its always gonna be hard to bring them to NZ from Australia so I think we need to focus on fixing the problem of why we cant produce them or keep the ones NZ does produce, the ones that come here from Oz are a bonus .

Hard to be excited about the coming season and we look like a bottom 3 squad.
A couple of injuries and the squad depth will be tested to say the least, RTS goes down for a long period and it will be grim.

The obvious lack of pace will see a dour process driven sleepfest where we struggle to get up field due to our lack of genuine kicking options,

Kearneys 1st team naming will be very telling.

Offensive coach won't do shit, it's still the style of play Kearney dictates.

And who cares about the difference between 8th and 4th. Need to figure out how to crack 10th first.

The origin period will most probably save us from the spoon, I think 14th by the time Kearney gets the arse and finish around 10th

Lol true. But to do that we need a coach who can produce intensity on game day, and we need to convert our high red zone statistics. If SK is over ruling a part of the game he really lacks skill in then, I think we need a new coach.

Going to be a long painful year, a Dud CEO trying to fool the new boss to save his neck, a coach doing the same, a team with too many el cheapo players in key positions, the 2nd hardest draw.

It could be our year for the Spoon. If we cant win a Prem may as well win something. haha.

Well on the plus side we wont have a Rookie 7 moved to 6 and Tohu Harris moved to 7. That was absurd. All caused by George booting SJ, then releasing CNK, Lino and others who could have played half better. Why Hayze Perham wasnt blooded during that period instead of later on when he got 10 minutes made no sense, keep both rookies in their native spots, Chanel at 7, Hayze at 6. Boy George has been the biggest F up in the history of the sport.

I hope we get to 15th.

From what I saw this year, unless we play CHT every game, we will not improve. our coach too often plays favorites and we lack genuine pace...

Playing style will be the biggie for me next season. While we would all love some top signings there is still in my eyes some talented guys in the team. A fresh start with the injection of some young guys could do wonders. I’m looking forward to the ‘All In’ episode where SK stands in front of the playing group and says’ Guys, I got it all wrong last year, the playing style I tried to implement didn’t match the skills you all have, and I probably the selection balance wrong too, but this season we will correct that, there is talent here and we are going to use it “ .... then rambles into the game speech from Any Given Sunday 👍🏽
