General Soccer World Cup 22

One question.

How the faq is this being played in Qatar?……
When it was first announced to be going to Qatar I was commuting a lot more. More time to listen to Radio Sport.

That was 10-plus years ago. They had correspondents from different parts of the world. I remember one of the English correspondents bringing up how it was the usual FIFA politics and backroom deals. He pointed out that the time of year the World Cup is typically played the temperature in Qatar wasn't really ideal for football. I'm not sure what has happened with that since then. There have been other issues more recently around the event that have created more attention.

Although I used to play soccer or football when I was young I haven't been a big watcher. After watching a round of NRL matches on a weekend it's a bit hard to squeeze in other codes. I do often start watching more when the World Cups come around.

What amazes me is the passing. Ok, I stopped playing at such a young age so our passing was terrible and it might have improved if I played another year or two. But still watching them cover a lot of ground while moving the ball between teammates just with their feet and the amount of control they have is impressive.

My ridiculous $20 multi on all the qualifiers getting through the group stages is already looking shaky with the jitters from some of the big boys in their opening games. I had Australia as the dark horse to qualify to up the stakes to a $17k-ish return, now it looks like a whole slew of outside shots stepping up!

Damn, so my dark horse actually worked, pity a couple of the other "more likely" picks already failed 😅

In any case, hope Straya goes well in their knockout match, it will be Poland or Argy right?

As sports tragic Germany looks a good bet at those odds
Yeah they always seem to do well in world cups.
I can’t go past Brasil/ France/ Spain.
Argentina look wobbly- outside of that I can’t really see it- they’d all have to play four outstanding games from here on in.
Yeah maybe Germany the dark horse… or England…

Brazil needs a strong on field leader, like Socrates in the past, do they have that? France and Spain are not at their best imo.

Germany will be relentless and will be hard to break own, not pretty, but pretty effective. England have the team, if they select with trust in their Defence, and the Defence performs.

Good on Japan, Plays with determination and are good to watch. What are their chances moving on? Is it my imagination, or is there an inordinate number of shots hitting the post.

Holly shite- Morocco just knocked out Spain in a penalty shoot out!

Not only could they not score a goal, but the winning kick was scored by a Spaniard just to rub it in! Good to finally get an underdog win in the knockout round!

You do have to wonder how many top-level players are holding something back, knowing they've still got to finish their club commitments.

Was hoping Switzerland would smash Portugal so the Man United Crybaby could do home and sulk, but at any rate it was good to see Portugal obviously didn't need Ronaldo. That might wake him up...Probably won't, though.

Horrible day here in Brasil.
Had a massive night so was hungover as so got to the pub we were going to watch the game late and couldn’t get a table as it was packed out by then so we went home to watch it- as soon as I sat down I fell asleep and missed the whole game.
Woke up to tears… had really been looking forward to watching the games over here.
Then to rub it in Argentina (who we were all death riding) won on penalties :banghead:.
Would like to see France or Morocco win it from here.

In the spirit of predictions that won’t last five minutes. I think England have the best chance of winning this since 1966. Good players, strong squad and not knackered after a long domestic season.

Prepare for disappointment!
