Skytv are yet to finalise the broadcast deal with the NRL, so nothing is scheduled to be played for the whole year atm!
Apparently the NRL likes the thought of free to air TV, but I hope Sky get it. I cant imagine TV3 playing all NRL matches live during the weekend...
I'd love to see them all! The trials arent realistic really but I would be happy to watch the Warriors TV footage or ME review tape. Wont be high NRL quality but worth a watch on youtube. Not like I can afford to fly to GC and Dunners...couldnt give a toss about those 3 games....id rather see the Warriors trial games on tv
Surely this is a bit of a false economy?
If the NRL think that the NZ rights are worth more than Sky have been paying they are clueless and this is why.
1. Sky show ALL games, therefore their $14m is worth the price as they get lots of content for the money.
2. Free-to-air TV in NZ is not going to spend more than $14m for the rights as they are very likely only going to be broadcasting Warrior games and maybe some highlights of others.
Sky will get the rights as they are the only ones who can show all the games, and if you are FTA you are paying more for way less essentially.
14 million seems about 1/2 of what it should be, they would make that through origin, the problem with the last tv deal is they sold them short and were way undervalued, which is one of the reasons it has more than doubled this time.
I reckon the NRL are trying to 'add value' by mentioning a F2A deal but SKY can see right through it and are calling their bluff. If the NRL seriously believe that any of the public broadcasters are going to show a game in the NZ Masterchef, America's Got Talent, NZs Got Talent or any other BS shows timeslot then they are BSing themselves. In the mean time, we poor ugly sisters of Union will just have to suffer...but is it undervalued?
the price can only be what people are prepared to pay... are TV3 (for example) willing to pay the same price to effectively only get to show 1 game a week as Sky would to show all the games?
Free to air won't show all the games, they just won't. So they are effectively paying for a whole bunch of stuff they can't use.
