Was reading through the skywatch yesterday and noticed that sky will not be showing the all stars game on the ninth and will not show the Charity shield and the World Club Challenge on the 22nd. Personally I find this disgusting as they have 3 sports channels to have them on and they just cant be bothered to put them on. If they treated the super 15 or stupid 15 as I like to call it like the way they treat the NRL I bet there would be a national outcry. Just wondering how many people on here would like to see these 3 games before we kick off the real game in March?

I would love to see the All Star's Game but don't overly care about the other option as I'd be more interested in watching the Broncos game in Dunedin. However, I am not too sure if Sky officially have the rights to the League this year at all.

Having said that; by kick off everything will be organised and we will most likely see all three games it's just Sky have not officially agreed to the rights just yet so they can't include these games in their schedules just yet.

As much as I'd like to see all possible League games, I'm not all that surprised tbh.

With that said I think there is still a moderate chance we will get to see the All stars match and hopefully Roosters vs Tigers

Skytv are yet to finalise the broadcast deal with the NRL, so nothing is scheduled to be played for the whole year atm!

Apparently the NRL likes the thought of free to air TV, but I hope Sky get it. I cant imagine TV3 playing all NRL matches live during the weekend...

Copied and pasted from a post I made yesterday at https://www.nzwarriorsfans.com/threads/nrl-signs-1b-broadcast-deal.5978/page-2#ixzz2JEh2Ftvr

As you may or may not have heard, the negotiations for a new broadcasting deal between Sky TV and the NRL have stalled. Sky TV had been paying $14 million a year to broadcast all NRL matches as well as all the Warriors U20 matches. Given the new billion dollar plus deal in Australia, NRL officials believe the package to Sky TV is worth considerably more. Problem is the lack of competition. One idea thats being banded about is the possible sale of NZ TV rights to a public broadcaster. Although the offer from a public broadcaster would no more or even less than what Sky TV would offer, the greater exposure would only serve to benefit the game as a whole.

Personally I hope this NEVER happens! Dont get me wrong. Im all for free TV and with the ESL on Maori and without NRL on Sky TV, I would love to tell Sky TV to go shove it. My main concern would be the coverage. I honestly dont believe that a public broadcaster would cover every game, play replays or have a weekly highlights segment that played every 4 hours. Although the Warriors themselves would have much to gain from the extra exposure, NRL fans who like to watch all games would suffer, myself included...

Prime's probably the only channel that could even try to pull it off. But since they ARE Sky TV then It's rather unlikely it'd happen...

Surely this is a bit of a false economy?

If the NRL think that the NZ rights are worth more than Sky have been paying they are clueless and this is why.

1. Sky show ALL games, therefore their $14m is worth the price as they get lots of content for the money.
2. Free-to-air TV in NZ is not going to spend more than $14m for the rights as they are very likely only going to be broadcasting Warrior games and maybe some highlights of others.

Sky will get the rights as they are the only ones who can show all the games, and if you are FTA you are paying more for way less essentially.

14 million seems about 1/2 of what it should be, they would make that through origin, the problem with the last tv deal is they sold them short and were way undervalued, which is one of the reasons it has more than doubled this time.

Ive always wanted a League channel on Sky similar to the Rugby channel. Theres enough content during the NRL/ESL season to have it running full time and I'd love to watch classic Warriors games, Origin, Kiwis games during the off season. Even if they showed the Vulcans games in the same quality as the live streams on the Vulcans website then I'd still watch it. This year would be a perfect time to do it with the World Cup coming. They would essentially be showing the same stuff as they normally do but with a more direct focus on RL. Another revenue stream would help SKY TV recoup their costs and I for one would subscribe. Just a thought...

but is it undervalued?

the price can only be what people are prepared to pay... are TV3 (for example) willing to pay the same price to effectively only get to show 1 game a week as Sky would to show all the games?

Free to air won't show all the games, they just won't. So they are effectively paying for a whole bunch of stuff they can't use.

I reckon the NRL are trying to 'add value' by mentioning a F2A deal but SKY can see right through it and are calling their bluff. If the NRL seriously believe that any of the public broadcasters are going to show a game in the NZ Masterchef, America's Got Talent, NZs Got Talent or any other BS shows timeslot then they are BSing themselves. In the mean time, we poor ugly sisters of Union will just have to suffer...

I thin kthe NRL are totally justified in putting the hard word on Sky. Sky are onto a winner. I know a lot of Rugby heads who will only tune in to 2 or 3 games a week, but will watch almost every NRL game. The timeslots and the intencity of competion in the NRL are second to none in any sport available on NZ TV. Even if people are out doing the bars on a Saturday night, the game times are good for passively watching while socialising. Sky have only received such a cheap deal through market domination and using the fact that League is the poor little brother to Yawnion to keep the visible value low, but the NRL are now seeing it as far more valuable that Sky makes out.

Perhaps the NRL is considering a multi-channel FTA deal where a few broadcasters (including TVNZ, TV3, Prime and maybe Maori TV are covering games. I think the Aussie coverage is a little like that now.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Sky were looking at increasing League coverage, and in particular televising Warriors trials where possible. Several years back, we used to gewt TV coverage of every Warriors trial, and I would like to see those days return. I would also like to see Sky play ALL Warriors U20s games, not just the home games and finals. I think it would be a total injustice to not air the All Stars game when it is supposed to be the season launch for the entire comp. I quite enjoy the Charity Shield match and would happily sit and watch it if it were on, but to be honest, I find it really hard to get into the WCC. Something about the games against Northern hemisphere teams is lacking, in my opinion.

I would be absolutely gutted if I cant watch any of the games. Will have to watch a live stream. Im really looking forward to seeing Mateo and Danger run around for the All Stars game. The other 2 are still first class league games and Im hanging out!!!

Personally I love the WCC, that's the start of the season for me! There's nothing better than getting up at 5am on a late Feb' weekend morning, kickin' back on the lazyboy in front of the tv with a few cold stubbies....... not that that differs from any other weekend morning....... but at least I get to watch a live game of footy! GO LEEDS!!

I'm wondering if TV3 maybe has made the NRL an offer to show just the Warriors H/A games live?

Sky would get to keep what they have, but will re-broadcast the Warriors games on delay either later that evening or the following day ala what Fox sports does with Channel 9. It probably means more money for the NRL too in the overall broadcast deal.
