NRL referee Paul Simpkins has been handed the biggest game of his life, his first ever NRL Grand Final.
Simpkins was shown a vote of confidence by the NRL with his appointment to the penultimate week of the NRL calendar with Steven Clark, putting him in the Top 2 referees in the game. Both Simpkins and Clark had good games over the weekend, although their styles are contrasting.
However, it was generally expected that Steven Clark would get the nod, having been behind Tim Mander and along-side the man who's fallen from grace, Sean Hampstead, for the most part of 2005. Most fans felt Clark would get the nod, despite there being a number of controversies during the season involving Clark as the man in the middle. Simpkins was generally considered an outsider.
It hasn't turned out that way, and Simpkins rise to #1 NRL referee is now complete.
