Player Shaun Johnson

Great story, aint no secret I think so..

https://rugbyleagueweek.com.au/he-can-become-a-great/

WE all know he has an abundance of flair. But Warriors half Shaun Johnson is now proving he has the toughness and level head to go with it as he strives to be the leading halfback in the NRL.

And he has received the backing of the best Kiwi No.7 of them all, with Stacey Jones insisting the 23-year-old is now the complete package. Jones says toughness was the final piece of the Johnson puzzle and he now has all the tools to enter the realm of greats.
Johnson played with a groin strain in the Warriors’ 24-16 win against the Titans last Saturday and then battled through an ankle injury to steer his side to victory.
“He is definitely showing a new toughness and that completes the package,” Jones says.
“He has the ability to read the play, the speed, the flair. . . he could become one of the great halves.
“Let’s not forget he is still only 23 and his best footy is still ahead of him.
“I spoke to him last week and he was filthy on himself for not winning us the game against the Bulldogs in round 10. That shows the hard edge he has developed to his game.”
Johnson reveals how new coach Andrew McFadden, a former halfback himself in his NRL playing days, laid it on the line to him about what he expects from  his chief playmaker.
“‘Cappy’ (McFadden) is straight to the point and he really gives it to me, which is what I need,” Johnson says.
“He understands that I am a different style of player to what he was, but he is getting the best out of me every week. He said he doesn’t expect me to score the flashy 100 metre tries or take intercepts. But he does expect me to be in every play in every game, and to play tough.
“You get a good indicator of how every NRL side is going by how the halfback is performing.
“I am getting there, and the team is really starting to find its feet.”
McFadden hails Johnson’s toughness and says the Kiwi Test half has taken his advice on board.
“Shaun didn’t have any training sessions until our last captain’s run, and for young players that can sometimes really put them off,” he says. “So to go out and perform like that against the Titans under duress was really special.
“Sometimes you have to play hurt, and it is good to see him doing that.
“Shaun gets judged on whether he scores tries and makes breaks. But we really focused on the simple things that make him a good player, which is getting his hands on the ball and finding ways to get into the game through basic things like support play . . . and just running when the team needs him to.
“On the back of that comes all the things that people love to see, but we just want a consistent effort from him each week.”
Johnson has made no secret of the fact he wants to be one of the great halfbacks and McFadden is backing him every step of the way.
“Shaun wants to be the best. He is determined to do that, and I want to help him get there,” McFadden says.
“He is a real student. He likes talking about halfback play and how to develop that. He is very skilful and talented, but he still needs that direction.”
Johnson insists playing through injury is a necessity for him if the Warriors are to reach their potential.
“I want to be out there every week with the boys, and be part of something that I think can be pretty special,” Johnson says. “No NRL player takes the field 100 per cent. It is just the nature of what is a really tough comp.
I didn’t have any needles. That probably would have made it worse.”

He could have rightly claimed a job for the boys courtesy of the Warriors for life had he played the game....

Yep. He is one of he best Warriors ever. Yes he was a princess. But I wonder how his agent put it all acrosss. Because to our CEO spitting rubbish on twitter, and SJ was right, the Warriors gave him his salary. At that stage I thought some management and he might agree to lowering his salary, but nope they got Georgie in and he made a meal of it.

Given the Warriors are a 6 and a 9 short of being a great team. One would think $800k for a 5/8th of SJs skill (not his individual brilliance, that was just silly how much Magic he produced, but he always did this specific HB role brilliantly every week.

We will not get another 5/8th of his again of SJ's quality again for $800k. Love him or hate him. It means we have a player X at 6 which we desperately need and we can still afford a marquee 9 and still how have more X factor at 1 with Walsh.

We could have some sensational spine.

They could keep Kodi but I suspect they just bought themselves time not to rush into decisions as they are in an excellent position.

Another CNK imo. His intensity was so high, as was his consistency. I love seeing him at 9, with his pace out of dummy half, exactly who we need Walsh backing up. We have to focus on finding a broken line in the middle of the field. I just cant see Egan ever being that person, as good as he is on feeding the ball and defense, he just doesnt run the dummy half when we got them offside running back etc.

One thing we will never know...is this claim that SJ was toxic to the teams culture.

If it turned out to be true, that he said he wasn’t gonna try for the rest of his last season without a renewal on his terms.....then he would go down as the worst Warrior in our history in terms of his attitude towards the team.

If we assume that it was poorly handled by the club, it is not a stretch to accept that the Warriors version, where he was a complete prick about it all....is also true.

Because lets all be honest....all we are left with....is a personal choice....to choose who we believe.

Given that the Warriors seem to not want Shaun even if the price was a dollar....I have serious doubts about Shauns side of the story.

Bottom line, if Shaun was the good guy....and offers himself again, for a fair deal.....I do not for a second believe that the Warriors are being run by an unforgiving vindictive bunch of psychopaths that Shaun would have us believe.

Look at the faith they are showing in far less talented CHT....that runs against any Warriors are bad back story that SJ was treated unfairly.

You can go through our roster and see Kosi, Berry, Pompey, and Bunty,....to know that this club is sympathetic to its prospects.

Lawton was injured with an Achilles .Egan was here well before Lawton left
Yeah I know, but when they would put Lawton on at 9, our X factor increased. Egan is sluggish and not intense enough, nearly no dummy half runnng.

They have the salary for 6 and 9, but lawton would have given us a chance at a marquee winger. Keep one big man and nab someone like Regan Greece from super league, one of the few players that has the talent to make it in the NRL. Hes about RTS height and quite tough, but his speed would be one of the quickest in the NRL for sure.

I just hope they are wise with the money and no more trying to buy the spine players at some wishful thinking, AK, Egan, Kodi etc.

Speaking of, Lawton just scores a dummy half run try.

What is wrong with the player management at the Warriors.

It was clear Lawton was the go to choice with his speed and intent, but we went egan. We just have no concept on how to build and retain a team.
Lawton was supposed to be out injured for the entire season... what happened there?

I think we backed Egan as a smart player that filled the skill set for a 9 when we signed him. Since then the games changed and the skill set has moved towards explosiveness. Still think Egans a smart player that will do the job but the game is moving away from him.

Same as wingers and Maumalo. To keep on thread, halves are also getting faster. SJ value has plummeting post Achilles and with age. Prime SJ was before his time and was a perfect fit for the modern game.

Its all about having the opposition continously being offside and just rolling 60m and over the line. We could do that with this team. I just dont see Egan running offten enough or fast enough.

Id be happy with just SJ sgning or another marquee 6. Clearly we are trying to replace Kodi. I just dont know who else we could possibly attract/ SJ is as good as it will get. Saves good money for 1-2 players. Solve the obvious problem first and worry about 9 and a wing after we fix the firs key to the spine. SJ I think would enjoy somebody like Walsh who is a lot like a younger SJ (without the princess part)

‘Karl Lawton set to miss entire 2021 season’

Quick recovery. I understood we offloaded him, even though we didn’t really want to, to free up the cap space for a playing member and hopefully another hooker. Next minute he’s back half way through the season and we don’t have a backup hooker!

Yes I understand but injuries are very hard to quantify. AFB was supposed to be out for most of the rest of the year but back on Sunday apparently

This plus the fact that you cannot have three small forwards as NRL starters unless you are Stephen Kearney.

Sironens arrival.....and Lawtons injury...meant that this triad of Sironen, Jazz and Lawton had to let one of them go.

Actually four small forwards to weigh up when you throw in Egan.

Someone had to go, Jazz offers way more minutes than lawton....so it was not surprising, that when lawton got hurt, that the Warriors agreed to his release.

Lets see how long he stays fit for Manly.

Make that 5 if he was still around as Kodi is being replaced, he knows it, hes already been made to play 9, as soon as a quality 6 is found, Kodi will become the 9. possibly sharing with Egan. Then end of next year I think if I was Kodi Id be shopping for a Super League club now.

Would love to see Otukolo get a crack. Just off the bench for a start. Would answer a few questions if he went okay
