General Secret Auction Draft - Bonus Round Underway

Hi

Here we go! This kicks off this Wednesday Night Dec 9th! (provided tajhay is ok with that)

Here are the agreed upon rules

If you have any questions please ask. No question is a lame question. If you are wondering it then somebody else will be as well.

As long a you understand 80% of the concept going in you will be fine as it will become very straight forward once you start playing and I will give reminder instructions for the first few rounds.

GAME CONCEPT

There are 14 contestants. Each contestant tries to compile the best rugby league team they can by acquiring/successfully bidding on players I will offer up each day. A rugby league team will be 13 dudes as opposed to 17.

Will offer 30 players each day for bidding. They will be randomly chosen. You can expect a real mix. Some Kak, some star players, and some hidden gems that only a good contestant will spot.

The players will be from GB / Aus/ NZ and have played at least one test matches and appeared between 1980 – 2020.

Will manually scan each list of 30 to ensure at least one or two marquee players are on offer each day.

Each contestant will have a war chest of $10M to acquire a minimum of 13 players and maximum of 17 players. If you acquire more than 13 you will name your starting 13. You will not name a bench or get credit for having a strong bench.

We will use a silent auction process as the default by secretly submitting your bids for the players you want out of the 30 offered each day. We are presently working through the process of how you will secretly submit your silent auction bids (Thanks for your help tajhay)

Contestants will look at the daily list of 30 players and bid on a minimum of one player each round. The highest bidder wins each player.

We will have 4 super rounds. These will be open auction rounds where you bid openly in the game thread instead of secretly. These will be exciting rounds with counter bidding.

The super rounds will be: Round 3, round 6, round 9, and round 12

According to my rugby league project query here are the player pool counts
GB 226
Aus 300
NZ 196

Total 722

If all 14 contestants manage to acquire 17 each then this will be 238 players taken or just over 32% of the available pool.

The time deadlines

All bids in by 4pm NZ time *

That same evening by 11pm at latest I will post the results of the silent auction or open auction. And the 28 player list for the next round be it an open auction or a super round.
People may then starting playing immediately once the new list is posted and have until 4pm the next day to get bids in.

*Note have edited the deadline time to 4pm to give me more time to do my calculations each day

The first list will be posted and the Game will start Wednesday December 9th

Suggest you spend your time before that making a strategy. Those with a strategy will do better in this game.

DETAILED RULES

  • Wrighty will be the administrator/owner/adjudicator and rule maker of this game. I will post the rules in advance but also potentially invent and even change rules as required during the game and decide disputes by making a judgement call.
  • If a tie on bids no one gets that player. Contestants encouraged to give granular bids rather than round bids e.g $56,537 reduces chance of tie vs $100,000 on the nose.
  • If you after sending in your secret auction bids (methods to be determined) and have a change of heart. You may send ONE edit/revision before the 7am deadline.
  • Minimum bid is $1
  • Must bid in dollar units ie can’t go down to cents to bid.
  • No bid or total bids you make in any round can be more than the balance of your war chest.
  • If you run out of money. Wrighty will allocate you some fillin players to make up your 13. They won’t be great players.
  • You may acquire up to 17 players and name your top 13. This rule is there in case you acquire someone you don't really want that much upon review.
  • If you go inactive and don't bid on at least one player in a given day you get a strike. Two strikes and you are eliminated.
  • You can not bid in one round on more players than you have capacity for in your 17 should you win all the bids. If you bid on too many people or more than your war chest allows you get a strike and have all your bids for that round voided, And as mentioned two strikes and you are eliminated.
  • No colluding allowed. No discussions outside off this thread or any other officially sanctioned thread. Ie do not PM another contestant.
  • No deliberate non bids - have allowed a two strike process in case someone genuinely forgets. If Wrighty decides a contestant has deliberately avoided bidding out of gamesmanship, or deliberately broken any other rule out of gamesmanship they will be disqualified immediately. Accidentally breaking rules will result in the strike process or another ruling as deemed appropriate.
  • We will have as many rounds as necessary for 13 out of the 14 contestants to get at least 13 players. The last dude/contestant will have fillin players assigned be for the remaining spots. The end of the game will happen quickly as no one will want to be the last dude who gets the fill ins. The fillins won't be guys who have played tests - they will be:
    • Forwards fillin including hooker - Jazz
    • Centres fillin - Brad Takairangi
    • Wings and Full back fillin - Jamayne Isaako
    • Utility fillin - Kurt Capewell
    • Halves Fillin - Blake Green

The game must end by Jan 31st at latest. We will also break over Christmas day. I expect this to wrap up somewhere around Dec 27 at latest. Probably sooner. On the odd day, which I will notify you in advance, the game will be on hold if I have plans that day. That shouldn’t happen too often.

STRATEGY ADVICE
Make a strategy.
Decide in advance how much you are prepare to spend on a marquee immortal. You may need to fool around with a calculator or spreadsheet to do that.
And how much you will bid for a regular Joe player.

This should be a blast.

Final Note I will be updating this opening post with spreadsheet cut and pasts of warchest balances so keep an eye on the opening post as the game advances.

This will be the only game am running this off season as have a course for work to take in February and March. Hope you enjoy. This should be a cracker and a lot of fun for all :)

I’d consider it if I can understand the rules. The last one was completely impenetrable to me.

If I’m in you might have to chat amongst yourselves while you wait for my answer, I’m night to your day
I was in the same boat as you, reading the rules was like WTF, but they became basic to understand once the game started.
Just remember, no question is a dumb question.

You're marked down as in. You can graciously withdraw if the rules make no sense to you. I will not be posting the rules until after the sign up deadline. The rules of the last one scared off lots of people so I simply won't be sharing them until dudes have signed up.
I promise you two things
1) One you start playing everything will seem intuitive and common sense
2) The rules will be significantly shorter this time as this game although fascinating is easier to administer,

Tentatively yes
I will mark you down as yes and you can withdraw any day before the start day. Cheers. You will enjoy this TajHay and with your strong player knowledge and strategy skills would put you as an early favourite to win. Thanks.

I’m in, great fun and highly recommend
This post is most meant light heartedly and to pull your leg so please laugh along with me.
I do not have you as an early favourite in this game Wizards as the game will involve shrewd management of a budget/war chest. Given the fact you spent $500K on TRex of all people in the last game - well yeah... you are at long odds to win at this stage. LOL. Just jokes.

Hey Wrighty,

Ahead of the curve... look at the Warriors going for size with our recruitment this year 💪. It’s not about the individual players, it’s about the overall team strategy 🤓.

Anyway, hows the the underarm cricket ball Ricky donated to you? I hear it’s a real feature in your Warriors trophy cabinet, seen as its so bare!

Ricky seems to think the argument that erupted over it last year between your Kiwi and Aussie players has resulted in the Warriors recruiting all non Kiwis for next year mate, so some good came out of it 😉.

Just an update on my team. As you will remember we went for the most marketable team in world sport, with grand plans to quit the NRL and tour the world. With Covid, our strategy was exposed but in the finest tradition of our good US supporter, Mr Trump, we’re taking the view that it was everyone else’s fault! We’re been in touch with the Wolfpack management for advice on coming back bigger and stronger this season and have tentatively make enquires with SBW about throwing all out cap at him...
