Warriors 34 Tigers 12
TEEN Tigers fullback Shannon McDonnell returned to the field with a cracked rib last night - and then accused the Warriors of "head hunting" him.
"He certainly didn't miss me - it was in the head somewhere," McDonnell said of a hit from stand-in Warriors captain Ruben Wiki which could come under scrutiny tomorrow.
"I get that in every game. Big guys don't like it when little guys step them. They head hunt you when they get you.
"It dazed me for a few seconds. I'm not actually sure what it was. It would be good to see on the replay."
The Tigers' title defence took another blow as McDonnell and winger Daniel Fitzhenry (collarbone) joined a lengthy casualty list after the 22-point loss.
But the Tigers were fuming about the incident which led to Fitzhenry's injury - which forced them to send McDonnell back into the game - and Wiki's 55th-minute hit on the 18-year-old.
McDonnell will miss out on playing in Wednesday night's under-19s Origin curtain-raiser because of the cracked rib.
"I had a needle so I didn't feel it at all. It's starting to wear off now," he said.
"I'm sick of injuries. I've had a broken hand this year, a hamstring and now a cracked rib."
The Aucklanders put the Tigers to the sword following the two incidents.
After Fitzhenry was backslammed into his own in-goal (51st minute), interchange forward Louis Anderson scored.
And after the ball was jolted free from McDonnell by Wiki's hit, prop Evarn Tiumavave crossed a few plays later to make it 34-6.
"They picked (Fitzhenry) up off the ground and we had someone behind him," Tigers coach Tim Sheens said. "I thought the interpretation was in that instance, he's supposed to be held.
"He was put in a dangerous position. They'll change it next week (but it's) a bit late for Fitzy."
Sheens was also critical of Wiki's tackle on McDonnell.
"It looked to me like the arm's come in contact with the kid's nose. He was bleeding from it as well. There's no doubt that will be looked at," he said.
Wiki described it as "a good tackle".
Anderson is on report for a high challenge on Scott Prince that sparked a melee late in the game.
The highlight for the Tigers were rookie Taniela Tuiaki's two tries and Benji Marshall's amazing flick pass for the first of those in the 31st minute.
But Sheens was unimpressed with his five-eighth, saying: "Add to that a few of the poor passes. Benji's got a long way to go with his game. I've said that for some time."
