General Ruben Wiki: Appalling Loss Led To Team Vow

From www.nzherald.co.nz:

Although we've won our last four games, we're not yet satisfied with what we've achieved. That's one of the great things about this side, we always want more.

The Cronulla game five weeks ago was the turning point for us this season. We were appalling that day.

We were complacent going into the game and did everything opposite to the way we'd played against the Tigers the week before, when we had one of our best performances of the season.

It was torture watching the video of the game and we made a pact as a team that we wouldn't let it happen again.

I can accept a loss if we play well and get beaten by a better side but I can't accept playing poorly. There are standards required in the NRL and we were woefully short that day.

Since then, we've been training the way we have been playing and been doing all the "one per centers" I like to talk about. Even the forwards have been doing extra training and coming up with some plays we use in games, depending on the opposition.

It's all built up an incredible togetherness at the club. We have always had it this season because, from day one, Ivan Cleary and John Ackland put in place a structure we believed in.

We lost a few close ones at the start of the season but we never lost faith in what we were trying to do and things seem to be falling into place now.

It's certainly the most enjoyable time I've experienced in 18 months at the Warriors. I always love playing footy, especially in front of Kiwi fans, and dread the day I will have to retire but you can see the enjoyment in the faces of the guys when they come in each day.

There are also no egos at the club and not every club can say that. If someone did start getting too big for their boots, they would soon be cut him down to size.

It means that the younger boys feel comfortable speaking up and, even though I'm a bit long in the tooth, I'm learning things from them. I think all of the older guys feel the same way and it means every player takes ownership for their role.

Everyone is asking us if we can make the playoffs and while this means we must be doing something right, for me it's about improving each week. If it happens, it happens, but the only thing we can worry about is the next game and that's the Bulldogs in Sydney today.

One thing's for sure, we're a very tight unit and the guys would run through brick walls for their mate, their brother, beside them. Even if someone stuffs up, we're always there to support him, not criticise him.

I'm sure it will continue and, if it does, who knows where this side can go?

I really like the set-up in the team this year, they seem to be very close and the coaching staff and management is really helping the players reach their potential. Good stuff!
