TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT: Vatuvei, Fisiiahi on bench

Wingers Manu Vatuvei (pictured) and Glen Fisiiahi have been included on an extended bench for Sunday’s fifth-round NRL encounter with unbeaten South Sydney at Mount Smart Stadium (kick-off 4.00pm; match day sponsor: Canterbury of New Zealand).

Vatuvei has been sidelined with an ankle and knee complaint since lasting only 18 minutes of the season-opening loss to Parramatta on March 9 but is close to being able to make his return.
Fisiiahi was originally named to face North Queensland yesterday but remained on bereavement leave following his sister’s funeral last week.

Vodafone Warriors head coach Matthew Elliott said the winger/fullback would be available for selection again this weekend along with Bill Tupou and newcomer Ngani Laumape, who have filled the wing spots the last two weeks.
Confirmed to start in the No 9 jersey for the first time this season is veteran hooker Nathan Friend. He wore No 22 in his return from shoulder surgery in yesterday’s long-awaited victory over North Queensland. Also named in the starting line-up is second rower Feleti Mateo, initially included on the bench against the Cowboys.

Also selected are fullback Kevin Locke, centre Dane Nielsen and utility Ben Henry, who all failed to finish the match yesterday. Nielsen didn’t return after halftime after suffering a rib injury while Locke and Henry both left the field with head knocks.

“There are question marks over whether we’ll have them all against the Rabbitohs but we’re certainly hoping they are fit to play,” said Elliott.
“On the positive side we have some more players coming back from injuries.
“Nathan and Jerome (Ropati) both came through their comeback games yesterday and now Carlos (Tuimavave) and Russell (Packer) are set to play too while Manu (Vatuvei) is in contention as well. That’s really good news for us.”

Despite the imminent returns, Sione and Sam Lousi, Dominque Peyroux, Alehana Mara, Charlie Gubb and Steve Rapira remain on the injured list.

Having secured their first win of the season by hold the Cowboys off 20-18 in a thriller yesterday, the Vodafone Warriors now take on the quality-laden South Sydney Rabbitohs. With the likes of Greg Inglis, Sam Burgess, Issac Luke, Nathan Merritt, John Sutton and Adam Reynolds in their ranks they’ve made a perfect start to the season by beating the Sydney Roosters, Cronulla, Penrith and Canterbury-Bankstown.
The match will again be part of a triple header with the Auckland Vulcans playing North Sydney in the New South Wales Cup at 12.00pm, the Vodafone Junior Warriors following against the Rabbitohs at 1.45pm and the NRL fixture at 4.00pm.

A pointless announcement.

A few players added to the bench, and all injured players still named.

Can't make anything from this one. Though I realize he has to name a team.

That is the type of injury list i'd prefer to have, all reserve grade players....hoping Locke and Henry are fit to play, we're gonna need them.

Dane Neilson and Locke back? Sweet. Happy enough if that's the team that rolls out. Could do with a bit more size against the Rabbits pack but we handled them pretty well last year and Henry went all terminator on G.I and didn't let him do shit, so happy he'll be there. Ben Henry will be an awesome player, he's already pretty fckin good tbh. Game smarts, attitude, defence, his running lines are getting better and he can pass well too. Tangent over, looking forward to the game but not expecting a win, it's easier that way! GO THE FCKIN WARRIORS!!

Pretty interesting to see 4 wingers named. Manu I thought was out till next round but assuming both he and Fish are available its going to be interesting to see who gets what and where. Good to see Locke, Dane and Benry named. Might still be a question mark on Benry with the naming of Seb...

Perhaps a pointless post then.
Just expressing my disappointment. I had hoped to see something to indicate the seriousness of the injuries, but they have all been named. Its just yesterdays team with a few cover players added.

Well we can take it that there is a great chance that they all could play. I'm sure Locke especially, would be less than fifty-fifty for this week's game. But the coaches and doctor must believe that they have a chance and while they have a chance as does Manu, they get an opportunity to prepare for the first grade side.

ME said that Neilson was not looking good in the post match press conference, and Benry at least will fail the concussion test (in my totally uneducated non-doctors mind). I assume Locke is probably the only chance of starting, but as you say is probably only 50-50. My guess is that they haven't run all of the tests needed and it is only the fact the team had to be named today (the day after the game) that got all of them into the list.

OMG

OMG

Scans determine whether you play or not after the concuss, any swelling around the brain will keep you on the benches. That's why they left the scans on Harrison until game day, give any swelling and fluid around the brain time to clear.
If Neilsen has done a rib cartilage it will be a month at least - prick of an injury, that you wish you had just broke it. They wouldn't of had time for a decent diagnosis, so he has been named.

Elliot said they perform 2 cognitive tests throughout the week on concussed players, and if they fail, they miss a week...but he didn't make it completely clear, what happens if they fail the first test, but successfully complete the second? or when do they do these tests, the day before the game, or spaced out through the week? some grey area's.

I thought we had all the mod cons, doesn't sound like they get them scanned at the Warriors.

I would have Sebastine instead of Feleti, but otherwise good. And it would definitely be Ngani over Billy. If Locke is fit, I would have to think long a hard about whether to play Manu or Fish. And of course Mannering to lock, Lowrie to 2nd row.
