TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT: Vatuvei, Fisiiahi on bench
Wingers Manu Vatuvei (pictured) and Glen Fisiiahi have been included on an extended bench for Sunday’s fifth-round NRL encounter with unbeaten South Sydney at Mount Smart Stadium (kick-off 4.00pm; match day sponsor: Canterbury of New Zealand).
Vatuvei has been sidelined with an ankle and knee complaint since lasting only 18 minutes of the season-opening loss to Parramatta on March 9 but is close to being able to make his return.
Fisiiahi was originally named to face North Queensland yesterday but remained on bereavement leave following his sister’s funeral last week.
Vodafone Warriors head coach Matthew Elliott said the winger/fullback would be available for selection again this weekend along with Bill Tupou and newcomer Ngani Laumape, who have filled the wing spots the last two weeks.
Confirmed to start in the No 9 jersey for the first time this season is veteran hooker Nathan Friend. He wore No 22 in his return from shoulder surgery in yesterday’s long-awaited victory over North Queensland. Also named in the starting line-up is second rower Feleti Mateo, initially included on the bench against the Cowboys.
Also selected are fullback Kevin Locke, centre Dane Nielsen and utility Ben Henry, who all failed to finish the match yesterday. Nielsen didn’t return after halftime after suffering a rib injury while Locke and Henry both left the field with head knocks.
“There are question marks over whether we’ll have them all against the Rabbitohs but we’re certainly hoping they are fit to play,” said Elliott.
“On the positive side we have some more players coming back from injuries.
“Nathan and Jerome (Ropati) both came through their comeback games yesterday and now Carlos (Tuimavave) and Russell (Packer) are set to play too while Manu (Vatuvei) is in contention as well. That’s really good news for us.”
Despite the imminent returns, Sione and Sam Lousi, Dominque Peyroux, Alehana Mara, Charlie Gubb and Steve Rapira remain on the injured list.
Having secured their first win of the season by hold the Cowboys off 20-18 in a thriller yesterday, the Vodafone Warriors now take on the quality-laden South Sydney Rabbitohs. With the likes of Greg Inglis, Sam Burgess, Issac Luke, Nathan Merritt, John Sutton and Adam Reynolds in their ranks they’ve made a perfect start to the season by beating the Sydney Roosters, Cronulla, Penrith and Canterbury-Bankstown.
The match will again be part of a triple header with the Auckland Vulcans playing North Sydney in the New South Wales Cup at 12.00pm, the Vodafone Junior Warriors following against the Rabbitohs at 1.45pm and the NRL fixture at 4.00pm.
