Vodafone Warriors head coach Matthew Elliott (pictured) has tweaked his familiar line-up only slightly by naming 18 players for Sunday’s 23rd-round NRL encounter with the Penrith Panthers at Mount Smart Stadium (NRL: 4.00pm kick-off; NYC: 1.45pm kick-off). Photo: Photosport

He has retained the same 17 used in the last three matches while adding centre Jerome Ropati to create a five-man bench.

The 28-year-old 140-game NRL veteran wasn’t originally named but was used as 18th man for each of the Vodafone Warriors’ last two matches against Cronulla and Manly.

In recent weeks Ropati has been turning out for the Vulcans in the New South
Wales Cup as he has built his way back from injury. He missed the Vulcans’ big win over Canterbury-Bankstown last weekend, travelling to Gosford instead to provide cover in the outside backs for the NRL side.

His only two NRL appearances so far this season were against Melbourne and Gold Coast in round seven and eight.

Other than his inclusion, Elliott has the same line-up used against Melbourne, the Sharks and the Sea Eagles over the past three weeks.

With losses in the last two outings after a run of seven wins from eight games, the Vodafone Warriors take on Penrith on Heroes’ Day, the club’s annual celebration of the contribution the emergency services make to the community.

They go into their fourth to last match of the regular season in 10th spot on 22 points, just two behind eight-placed Gold Coast and ninth-placed Canberra, two sides they face in the next two rounds after the Penrith fixture.

The Panthers have remained on 20 points for four weeks having dropped their last four games to Newcastle (14-32), Cronulla (10-38), the Sydney Roosters (6-42) and North Queensland (4-36).

“While they may not have good recent form we, of all teams, know what they’re capable of,” said Elliott.

“We’ll undoubtedly be reminded about what happened the last time we met but a lot has changed since then. We’ve shown plenty of improvement generally but had a tough day against a very, very good Manly side on Sunday.

“This is a game of major significance for us. Every game, every week is. What we need to do is to strive for the type of performance we know we’re capable of.
“Our members and fans have been brilliant supporting the team this season and we’ll certainly need everything they can provide this Sunday. This will certainly be another major test for us.”

It will be captain Simon Mannering’s 185th career appearance, drawing him level with Lance Hohaia in third spot on the Vodafone Warriors’ all-time list behind only Logan Swann (195) and Stacey Jones (261). Still only 26, Mannering will lead the side for the 85th time leaving him only six games short of equalling Steve Price’s club record of 91 games in charge from 2005-2009.

Prop Sam Rapira will edge closer to his 150-game milestone with his 148th match for the club while fellow front rower Jacob Lillyman plays his 97th game since joining the club in 2009.

Unusual move to include the Ro Bro on the extended bench. One can only assume there is an injury cloud over one of our outside backs?
Though I'd have thought Peyroux would be next in line.
*shrug* no real surprises.

I was starting to like Elliot few weeks back.. now he seems like a wet drip.. feels like win as many games to get a bonus or something.. whats the point of making the 8 if you crash and burn.. its about winning the comp... anything less is failure! Changes are needed.. Mateo not on teh park.. Lowrie a joke.. We need some more people with a winning attitude at the club.. I'm feeling it starts with Scurrah and seeps below.. last 2 games the white flag was out the bus window on the way to the game.. oh to have the warriors play a gutsy do or die game like manly.. one day....

If we dont pump the Panthers at home, we have no right to harbour dreams of being in the top 8.

With or without Ropati we should win by 13+. I want to see a ruthless performance by the team showcasing why they deserve to be in the finals series.

Well hey it's either that or a third consecutive limp-dick performance showcasing why we won't be in the finals series!

JBro has been the 18th man the last 2 games, so I assume things will be as per usual and he won't see any game time.

Other than that...Did anyone actually expect any changes?

No point making any craaazeh changes at this stage. If Ropo comes in, it had better be a forced change through injury. I don't want to see any BS gambles from Elliot, banking on experience, attitude, etc etc. This side was being hailed as a certainty for the top 8 a couple of weeks ago, and a J-Ro addition certainly isn't going to be the difference between making the 8 or not.

I think it's a bit of a piss in the face of other Vulcans players, J-ro has been very average at that level whenever I have seen him. His defence is as always very average (how does an apparent "intelligent player, great leader" time and time again make the same fuck up reads in defence??), and doesnt look to have much zip left. He is off contract next year and will very unlikely improve to a high NRL standard after all his injuries and time out of the game (when in the past he has only been average in NRL imo anyhow).

If they want him there for experience and leadership, make him the bloody ballboy.

JRO... no no no no no

I would start Matagi this week. We have been flat in the opening stages of the last few weeks. Plus it doesn't hurt to give the established props a rocket after being dominated by the manly pack

just when i thought it couldnt get any worse than having lowrie on the bench, we now have slopati.. DAMMIT!!! lets hope hes just there for moral support and doesnt make the field.

you guys might shit on Jerome but Id like to see the guy get some game time, hes been a soldier for the club. Everything is on this game so I want to see some passion in that forward pack, Taylor needs a rocket up his arse as does Mateo

I have always liked J-Ro when he is up to full speed and match fitness. The only problem is that it normally takes between 7-8 weeks to get there....makes it mid October!!!

Hard. If we lose this game and he's fit to play, Ropati should return for the rest of the season as it's likely to be his last.[DOUBLEPOST=1376370109][/DOUBLEPOST]
Left field but hasn't Ropati some experience at Hooker?

HOW ABOUT.... standoff :D

1 Locke
6 ROPO
7 Johnson
9 Leuluai
