Support/Announcement Previews and reviews

My local paper has given me the job of doing the reviews and previews of our local league comp. Ive written a few but im a bit nervous about doing them fulltime in case they arent good enough.
I know there are some people on here that write them for this website and LU or maybe someone does them for their newspaper - id appreciate any advice you guys can give me!
Just a question for everyone: what makes a good preview/review?

Thanks heaps guys :D

accuracy and benefit to the reader.

How is your article benefiting them more that just hopping on somewhere and looking up the stats? Thats what you need to think about when writing.

Thats my advice.

Hey im really happy for you.

When I did stuff for the school news paper a few years back the articles that got rejected were the ones that I listed to many names, you have to use them obvioulsy though.
Don't get long winded either.

Im sure you will do well.

If you are writing opinion make sure you have plenty of facts and good generalisations to back that up or otherwise people will not always see it your way.

Previews should be insightful, analytical and provide full details of team makeup and match details.

Reviews should focus on highlights such as best players, best plays, crucial incidents, coaches/captain's comments if available, injuries,
and full match details.

Controversy and humour doesn't go astray

I once recieved advice on publis speaking. If you say what people expect to here no one will listen to you.
Its alittle different but close enough to be relevant I think.

Also don't have any bias in your previews or reviews. Having a bias towards a particular team because you like/support them is easily picked up on and people don't really like it (unless you are biased towards the team they support).

Congrats!

Personally from my own writing experiences. You write something that your audience can relate to, it's fair, appropriate and makes for interesting reading. Even if it's a review. Also, don't over do it with too much or too little information.
That's just my two cents worth

One more thing Jonesy:

Make the heading catchy, the intro grab them, and the final comment gasping for more and you'll be half way there son.
