17 - Jordan McLean

The standard is set.

This team is unapologetically built around two future Immortals and arguably the two best players available in the game: Jonathan Thurston and Cameron Smith. Games are won on winning key moments and can anyone honestly claim their team will win more key moments than these two? I don’t think so.

Built on the Storm model, the rest of the squad is money-balled (although still 11 Dally M’s in the starting side), stacked with flair and talent, carefully constructed to provide a platform for our superstars to dominate and win games. Sorry, props don’t win games as the Storm consistently shows.

The spine is what excites me most. Smith. Mam and Thurston together are simply electric. Name a more exciting halves pairing in this competition?

Where possible, priority has been given to Indigenous, Māori and Polynesian players, proudly creating the most culturally diverse team in the competition. We’re channeling Tonga supporter vibes here!

Best captain, best kicker (highly important in this game evidently), a combined six Dally M Player of the Year awards (highest in the game) and 27 positional Dally M, this is statistically the strongest team assembled.

Case closed.

Warriors Strikeforce

1. Brett Stewart
2. Anthony Minnichello
3. Casey Mclean
4. Brent Tate
5. Ronaldo Mulitalo
6. Todd Carney (gk)
7. Stacey Jones
8. Shane Webcke
9. Isaac Luke
10. Ruben Wiki (c)
11. Luke Lewis
12. David Fifita
13. Jason Taumalolo

14. Ben Hunt
15. Liam Martin
16. Terrell May
17. Cameron Murray

This side is built to dominate - balanced, tough, and stacked with genuine game‑breakers. There are no weaknesses anywhere.

The forward pack is where this team buries opponents. The front row of Webcke and Wiki are immovable objects. You won't find any tougher players than those two. Luke brings brings spark out of dummy‑half and the back‑row of Lewis, Fifita, and Taumalolo gives me explosiveness, and the best metre‑eater in the modern era. Good luck getting any quality ball or field position against my pack! Big games are won up front and my team has the others covered. When you are voting have a look at the other teams forwards and you will know what to do.

Brett Stewart leads a backline that is fast, dangerous and skillful. Mulitalo brings power and a high work rate and Minnichello brings silky skills, acceleration and finishing ability. In Mclean I have the one of the best young players in the NRL (remember the Pacific Championships) and a future great at centre. Tate brings a mix of pace, power, defence, and reliability that you need in those important games.

In the halves, Stacey Jones and Todd Carney complement each other perfectly. The little general controls the tempo and gets the side around the park, while Carney adds spark, ball‑playing, and a great kicking game.

The bench rounds it out perfectly: Hunt is a super sub who covers the spine positions with composure, class and a kicking game, Martin brings aggression and powerful defence, May adds punch through the middle, and Murray gives me ball playing skills and defensive control when the game tightens up.

Overall, it’s a complete, ruthless side built to win big games and break teams apart.

Write Up

I tried to win this competition by having the most well-rounded team. This is evidenced by the consistent dollar spends for most players in the starting 13 around $1M.

Please consider:
  • The spine is In the top 3
  • Forward pack is in the top 2
  • An elite hooker in the top three for his position in the NRL era.
  • The Hardest and Meanest forwards. I drafted a theme of hard men up front. JWH, Mason, Thorn, Carrol, McInnes, Lodge and Hetherington.
  • The fastest wings in the comp, Hamiso and the Fox, who are also potentially the best pair of wings; and in my view, the best back three of Hayne, Hamiso and the Fox
  • Best Leadership. My two Vice Captains are both multiple time winners of the Dally M captain of the year award
Vote for my team not because it has the best players, but because it is the best all round team.

14.990 million spent.

Big fast wingers, speedy outside backs, combined with a hard nosed forward pack who will be hard to stop. Budurus’s cunning will help that forward pack go forward.

With the platform laid, Cleary and SJ can go to work. Two elite halves with complementing styles. A dream pairing.

Wightons versatility means we are well covered if injuries strike and Taupau and Paulo off the bench will torment some tired legs.

THE TERRITORIAL MONSTERS:

1. Tom Trbojevic - Turbo charged.
2. Brian To'o - GOAT yardage Winger.
3. Ryan Girdler - Intercept King. Solid all-round.
4. Justin Hodges - big, skillful & resilient. Legendary dummy half runner.
5. Xavier Coates - all-time finisher before he's even turned 25.
6. Trent Barrett - powerful & creative.
7. Adam Reynolds (GK @ 83%) - 181 career Try Assists, 2nd most 40/20s in NRL history.
8. Payne Haas - setting new standards.
9. Harry Grant - current Golden Boot.
10. Sam Burgess - tough as they come.
11. Viliame Kikau - 195cm, 116kg with skills of an outside back.
12. Gordon Tallis (c) - The Raging Bull!
13. Ben Kennedy - defensive workhouse with 78 career Tries.

14. Craig Gower - Kangaroos #9 & #7.
15. Josh Papalii - 377 career games to date & still faster than Jamal Fogarty.
16. Scott Sorensen - x4 Premierships. Equally at home in middle or edge.
17. Simon Mannering - 45 Test vet. Versatile & dependable.

As the name suggests, this team would dominate field position regardless of it's opposition due to the metre eaters on attack & it's sting in defense. Balanced roster with leadership across the park, clutch performers in big games and some very, very aggressive players blended in with some composed decision makers.

14. Tom Dearden

17. Kalyn Ponga

THE LOWDOWN

THE BACKS

Mr Toilet water himself headlines an all star back 5 that should see plenty of early ball with the elite creativity and ball playing inside them. Superstar centres in Joseph Manu and Mark Gasnier both are blessed with all world ability to break the line and create for their wingers. As for the wingers both elite finishers give them an inch and they will take a mile speed to burn.
The halves game plan is simple DCE the game manager Benji the game breaker.

THE FORWARDS
Our blue collar middle forwards will apply a Penrith like system no nonsense no fuss and make your tackles. Front loading their energy on defence with Fitzgibbon Bromwich and Radley leading the line speed they will dominate the ruck and on attack they will base their game around low risk high percentage footy with finding their front and quick play the balls top priority creating momentum and front foot ball and space for the superstars in the team to excel. Craig Wing will create havoc through the middle with his speed fitness and agility give him any opportunity and he will run.
The back row will see Victor Radley ball playing through the middle of the field creating space for the Ferraris out wide. Angus Crichton and SBW will terrorise opposition edges with their aggressive running games with SBW also given a license to roam. Sonny Bills offloads with Reece Walsh and Benji sniffing around… Good luck with that

THE BENCH
Tom Dearden will cover halves and hooker and will also be an option as ball playing lock if needed.
Regan Campbell Gillard and Lindsay Collins will maintain the intensity of starting middles with aggression making their tackles and line speed their job is simple.
Kalyn Ponga the trump card and potential match winner will cover every backline position if needed and will also be an option as ball playing lock late in either half targeting fatigued middles in the opposition much like he did in his origin debut.

Jayden Su'a

Team Summary

Spine

Campbell - Foran - Johns - Koroisau

Andrew Johns, the Immortal and greatest player of the modern era, is the centrepiece of this side. Johns the master game manager, controls tempo and territory. Keiran Foran complements him as a strong secondary organiser who can play either side of the ruck and defend at a high level.

Preston Campbell, a Dally M Player of the Year, provides attackling flair from fullback, linking both edges and playing instinctive, eyes-up football. Api Koroisau adds speed and deception out of dummy half, keeping the ruck alive and allowing the halves to dictate play.

Right Edge
Gallen - Menzies - Folau

This is the more defensively minded edge, built around experience and discipline. Paul Gallen brings aggression and leadership on the inside, while Steve Menzies provides and all round game and defensive stability. Israel Folau adds a devastating running game and aerial presence, especially off Andrew Johns short kicking game. Watch out for the banana kick!

Left Edge
Lauatiti - Inglis - Gagai

This is the strike edge. Ali Lauiti’iti’s strength, speed and offloading ability create defensive nightmares for opposition teams, generating space for Greg Inglis to be at his destructive best. Dane Gagai completes the edge with toughness, finishing and strong yardage carries.

Forward Pack rotation
Fifita - Fa'asuamaleaui - Trbojevic - Leota - Whyte

Andrew Fifita and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui start the match, providing early go-forward, size and intimidation through the middle. Jake Trbojevic is the defensive organiser and link player, while Moses Leota and Naufahu Whyte come off the bench to maintain intensity, tighten ruck defence, and lift the tempo as fatigue sets in.

Bench
Strange - Su'a
A practical and versatile bench. Ethan Strange offers utility value across the backline, while Jaydn Su’a adds impact on the edge.

That poll is awesome. Perfect for this type of thing.

There were two clear top teams and a close 3rd for me. They were both very balanced, strong teams right through the 1-17 and currently sit first and second. I don't want to say much more than that so everyone else can vote with a clean view for themselves.

NZWarriors.com

Early days yet but with 5 votes, 4 unique teams have been given first place votes.

Shows how close the teams are and to be honest you can make a case for most teams with all having strengths and weaknesses.

The salary cap has worked well spreading the talent (except for someone who unbelievably managed to pool 2 of the top 3 players). Every team has areas of improvement which is good for the game.

Thanks to Wrighty and his sidekick Hodges for another fun game!

Gus has retired from managing teams. Game face off!

My quick view on each team:

Brownstone - another solid outing for the defending champion. Strength: spine. an elite player or two short in the forwards. Typical Brownstone team with a few old school favourites.

Warrior 55 - very balanced team without the elites level superstars. Solid halves, solid spine, solid backs, solid forwards but without a clear strength. 1 elite superstar in the spine could have topped the team off (acknowledge someone else was greedy…)

Wrighty - solid without any real weaknesses but could have benefitted from an absolute superstar in the halves.

Muddogz - amongst th best spines and solid all round. With flare everywhere. Only weakness in an otherwise outstanding team is the edge forwards.

Cces - old school team with the greatest collection of Hodges players? Strong across the board but could have done with a superstar in the halves.

Naumaifooty - most attacking and x- factor team led by a strong halves that suit your style (respect!). Criminal Pomgas on the bench! Strong across the board but props could have used a superstar

Ryno - really strong all round. loved The balance of the forwards and backs. Johns could have used another real superstar in the spine.

Well done everyone. I can make a case for every team being top 3.

NZWarriors.com

My 1 cents worth…

Cces that’s a really good team you’ve put together there. The weakest halves combination by some margin however you’ve compensated for that with the strongest middle forward rotation, great outside backs & a solid bench although probably 1 prop short.

Naumai really strong edge forwards but middles & bench are a bit weak. Spine is quality outside of Wing at hooker -Walsh & Marshall a very scary ceiling that could beat anyone on their day! Great centre combo!

Wrighty you’ve got some really strong players & then some real head scratchers. I don’t understand buying Hetherington & Lodge, neither make most first grade sides. Timoko also doesn’t make sense to me & I feel the these selections have taken away your potential to win. Spine is better than average - Moses is so underrated & Hayne is elite. Scary scary forward pack!

Wizard obviously it’s all about Smith & Thurston who are so elite that they more than compensate for the balance of your spine. However that overspend does start to impact across the rest of your squad - you middles probably don’t measure up to some other sides. Let’s hope Thurston can link well to the attacking threats out wide like Lomax & Crichton!

Ryno I think you did incredibly well given the time zone you were operating in. I thought you had blown it spending that much on Joey, however your team is littered with quality - Inglis & Folau are number 1 in the positions you’ve selected them in… but Menzies at centre is a problem & I don’t like Gallen on the edge either - I’ve marked you down for both these selections. However overall a competitive team!

Muddogz that’s a strong overall spine although I don’t feel Pappy measures up vs the majority of the other fullbacks… but geez you’ve made up for it in the halves & hooker! Surely the scariest wing combo in the history of the game. Great props but I’m not a fan of the Barnett selection at lock & your edge forwards are a way off some of the other sides.

Warriors55 I rate your middles & bench very highly. Solid spine although I feel a lot will rest on Stacey to unlock the potential of your outside backs. However it’s a really good team you’ve put together & I think you’re a contender!
