I don't disagree with that and for what it's worth if I was forced to pick the team I would have to pick him reluctantly on the wing (contradicting what I said earlier) because he's the best of what we have. My recruitment/development high priority for
2020 would be a decent winger.
But doesn't that sum up the Warriors management and coaching mentality? We lose Manu so rather than adapting the team we just find a guy who is big and fast for his size so we don't have to adapt.
It's like when we were light on experience so we get Lowrie and Neilsen. Never mind they were both average, but we were happy to create a new hole to try and cover up the old one.
Maumalo was never a winger, he was dragged into the role because of his physical attributes and what frustrates me in a way is how well he has done the things we've asked him to do.
He's done remarkable to reach the level he has, and has shown the grit, determination and desire of a true Warrior. The guy is one person who IMO legit never gives up.
But that's also what frustrates me. If that same mentality
Maumalo had could have been developed for the second row we could have had our genuine edge breaking, halfback terrorizing, impact making forward that our team sorely lacks.
Add to that a winger who can still make metres, has the extra pace to finish plays and provide support play and has those extra skills where he makes a break and can kick inside to support players.
Right now we've got
Maumalo and Papali'i/
Blair on the edges and wing. That is a limited combo no matter how you approach it.
Wouldn't you much prefer a true game changing edge threat with a winger outside who can benefit from the carnage he provides?
My issue with
Maumalo isn't
Maumalo himself. He's a true Warrior who has done incredibly well with what he was asked to do.
My issue is with the management and coaching who IMO were short sighted in filling a hole in the short term that could have been turned into a game changer long term.
Now, of course it's no guarantee that
Maumalo would have become that player if kept in the second row, but considering the work ethic, desire, and all around determination he's shown to get to where he is, it's hard not to sit back and wonder "what if".
So yeah, I will continue to be frustrated with
Maumalo on the wing, but that shouldn't be confused with me disliking him as a player because it's quite the opposite. I feel like no matter how much he does his job on the wing he could have done so much more for us if we hadn't insisted on a quick fix fill of the hole Manu left behind.
PS - Sorry about the novel sized post.
