Player Peta Hiku

Peta Hiku given release from Warrington to join Warriors
David Long 15:33, September 9 2017

  • The signing of Hiku is a great acquisition, but it also highlights a huge error the club made in 2012 when they decided not to offer him a contract, believing he wasn't good enough to play in the NRL, despite being their Under-20s player of the season that year.

But the Sea Eagles took a punt on Hiku and got themselves a bargain.

Back in 2014, Hiku told Sunday News he never stopped believing in himself, despite the Warriors dumping him.

"After the Warriors I made the Junior Kiwis and when I was in that side someone mentioned to me that 70 per cent of under-20 players don't make it through and that went through my head, " Hiku said at the time.

"But I still hoped I'd make it and there wasn't any negative stuff going through my head.

"I still thought I could make it into the NRL, so yeah, I must have done something right."

Realising their mistake, the Warriors did try to sign Hiku later that year and offered him $1m for three years, however, he chose to stay at the Sea Eagles for less money.

When he was let go by the Sea Eagles at the end of the 2015 season, the Warriors didn't have enough room left in their salary cap to make him an offer and he chose to go to the Panthers on what was supposed to be a three-year deal.

Like Gerard Beale, who was signed by the Warriors on Friday, one of Hiku's great strengths is his versatility.

While he's been recruited predominantly as a centre, he can play on the wing and is even able to fill in at fullback, while for the Kiwis on their 2015 tour of England, he played five-eighth. For the first test he partnered Tuimoala Lolohea and for the next two with Kodi Nikorima.

The Warriors squad for next year will look remarkably similar to that Kiwis squad from two years ago as eighy players from it will have signed, or are expected to sign, for the club since then.

Those players are Kieran Foran, Hiku, Adam Blair, Manaia Cherrington, Issac Luke, Beale, Tohu Harris and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

Five players in that squad were Warriors players, while they have looked as signing at least a further six more players from that squad.

The Gisborne born Hiku has been a revelation at Warrington, with one knowledgeable league source in the UK telling Stuff that if it wasn't for him the club would be looking at relegation this season.

He surprisingly fell out of favour with Anthony Griffin at the Panthers this season and was allowed to move to Warrington, but at his age he was arguably too talented and too young to end up in the Super League.

At the Warriors he'll increase the competition for starting spots at centre and wing.

Given he's coming from the other side of the world to join the Warriors he'll be all but guaranteed of a place in the starting team, most likely at centre.

Where Beale slots in will determine who else gets to start in the backs, but David Fusitua showed enough this year he should play every week, but Ken Maumalo, Blake Ayshford, Solomone Kata and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad will all be fighting for the one remaining spot.

    Stuff

Haha Sorry, I tried moving on but you want on to keep going to prove you are as stupid as I first thought so here we go.
So I mentioned Hiku's defensive short comings you took offensive but I'm sensitive?
I'm good too, I'm having a great old time laughing at you.
Gummon Pet, you got your new contact today. Get off a fan forum and work on that D brother
Don't be throwing the "As stupid as you are" when typing words like "Importanter".....Stupid? Lol...When you start with insults like that it tells me you are walking around the house punching the walls out of frustration as you can't articulate yourself. Such a angry bloomers fulla hey?

My feelings aren't hurt by your comments on Hiku. Go finish colouring in your Flintstone book , Breetha. You might feel better later 😘

Glad they resigned him. He deserved another year. He was/is one of the few who appeared to actually want to be with the club in the dark days.

His defence is legendary, we all know it and I'm sure the coaching staff do as well. Will it improve? At this stage of his career I doubt it but as a coach you can live with it by utilising the players inside and out of him.

His football nous is superb and he is a rare attacking player with the ability to make a little space for his winger or squeeze out the unpassable pass. does his fair share share of the hard yards as well.

Good move Warriors

I tried to work with you but it's just become all too hard now. You can't even work out when I'm taking the piss out of you. Thanks for the laughs though. Punching walls over a poor man's troll like you? I wouldn't think so. You came at me for stating facts and now you're having a cry so no punching walls or anger here, just laughter.

For comparison, the last 4 years tackle success for our outside backs:

Hiku - 79, 83, 81, 78 average: 80%
Maumalo - 85, 75, 71, 77 ave: 77%
Fusitua - 86, 72, 73, 85 ave: 78%
Beale - 87, 90, 81, 89 ave: 87%
Herbert - 85, 86, -, - ave: 85%
Aitken - 95, 92, 89, 92 ave: 92%

Hiku is better than both our wingers but slightly below our other centres. They all look average in comparison to our new superstar defender Euan Aitken.

Geez champ, for a guy that was taking a week off this forum and wasn't worked up you've had a lot to say and are still extremely sensitive.
I don't think anyone would cry over what some clown had to say on an anonymous forum though. Especially from someone who only likes positive stuff and backs down on his original points.
Anyways the adults have real work to do so I'll let you carry on with your keyboard crusade. Just try and bear in mind in the future that not everybody will agree with you all the time, especially when you back down on your original points. Have an awesome day looking through those rose tinted glasses and enjoy thinking the lottery defence as you put it which you think is worthy of NRL standard.
I'll keep discussing things with an open mind and looking at the good and bad because that's how life is so no point engaging with you anymore. Actually, there was no point at the start! My bad

Amazing in the opposition red zone, not so much every other part of the field.

With the balance of the side in mind, we need an excellent defensive centre to match Aitken.

Our stand offf and fullback are not strong defenders, nor are our Wingers on the whole, although Montoya is an improvement.

The Warriors need to take this opportunity to finally tighten their edges. they have plenty of fire power.

A defensive centre with some speed, a standard pass and excellent tackling would fit well with what we have.-

That seems to fit Rocco, but no rush to get him starting every week, next year after another pre season he should be good to go.

Always enjoyed watching Hiku. At centre he provided more finesse compared to the power a lot of guys use. The try stats for our wingers pretty much followed the side of the field Hiku played on.

His versatility was also nice to have in the squad.

All the best and thanks for your service Peta.

Geez I like the guy, a genuine tackler, just like the old days...confucious said every try saved is one you don't have to score

I think Hiku has always been deceptive to the eye because of his style of play.

For example if he had been inside big Ken instead of Fusitua my mind boggles. Although it has to be admitted he had Shaun Johnson inside him which gave him a slight amount of space...and Peta didn't need much space.

He will be difficult to replace but as Dean Bell (one of our best ever... no arguments please!!!) once said, everybody has a use by date and Wigan had worked his out.

The Cowboys obviously offered him more cash, I go with POS on his decision.
