Those contracts would of been signed under Gould. When the $800,000 for Dallin Watene-Zelezniak was leaked I was thinking if more of their contracts could be seen as over valued. Probably wouldn't of been a problem if they were winning. As they could of built any other signings or juniors around them. Now that they are losing the typical NRL club response is to release and recruit.

I know teams build around the half back, even they can be in danger if the side isn't winning. But I bet the coaches son isn't going to be shopped around.

You gotta wonder how badly the whole sex vid releases affected the team this season. Even worse is the rumours of more lurking about. Be real shit for players living with that fear. End of the day they did it to themselves so no sympathy from me.

As for Dallin Watene-Zelezniak its just Cleary restructuring HIS team. He has never been afraid to make the big calls as far as rosters go. Steve Price anyone? Also never been shy of giving 'star' players a kick up the ass and demoting them. Ruben Wiki anyone???

Don't think this fits under the naughty chair more a slap on the rest.

Interesting how he didn't speak up too much about the refs when he was here. He justified the bad decisions back then as they weren't a hight profile Sydney club whoose bad decisions get plastered in the papers all week creating more pressure on the referees.

Looks like he's enjoying being in a high profile Sydney club and himself having a high profile. Can speak up now.

He probably didn't speak up here because he would have been wasting his time, and he would have been doing it every week. The NRL referees make far too many obvious mistakes. There is something wrong with the system. They seem to coach their brains out of them.

Good post except the part about ‘mistakes’... they are actively managing the game.

Don't understand why you complain about reffs when you won comfortably? Save it for the semi final you loose ivan!

There is a point of difference between questioning calls in isolation and inferring that the ref is deliberately trying the manipulate the result of the game. Cleary clearly overstepped and deserves the condemnation he's getting.

Really? Some grand conspiracy to fix the games?
Manly had 4 penalties and 3 six agains plus a few 50/50 decisions go their way in the second half. We received 0 penalties and 0 six agains. Similar when we played the Titans and got 2 tries up, we were suddenly playing 14 players and were on the receiving end of a 5-0 penalty count. It’s an open secret that the Warriors regularly get shafted.

Giving the benefit of the doubt, the refs could be trying to assist the team behind to keep the results close.... maybe... 😉

In the words of one of the more outspoken coaches ‘There needs to be an investigation’

I certainly think there is bias, but i'm not sure I can see a grand conspiracy that the NRL is rigged.

I think this goes a bit beyond the Panthers discussion to be honest. I saw the transcript for this discussion from NRL 360 and the bit that got me was this quote.
" in past years referees have been graded after each game. And within that it’s regarded that a close penalty count is good refereeing, whereas a lopsided penalty count was regarded as poor refereeing "
read whole thing here https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...r/news-story/adea08e29fdc62b82532a8845030dbeb

Now my biggest issue with the refs in the NRL is not the bias its the training they do to predict the way the game will go. And this square up shit is more of the same. managing games is influencing results. This has to affect the betting market, it sure as hell affects the overall results in the for and against, so how is this not blatantly rigging the comp.

To claim that its stopped this year seems simplistic to what has been an endemic problem for years now.
"Kent: No my point is this, if it’s happening subconsciously it could still be happening. It happened for the last five years ago under a different administration.

Ikin: You can subconsciously manage a team back into the game?

Kent: No you can!

Ikin: Manage a team? You can’t award penalties on purpose to get a team back in the game by accident.

Hooper: 100 per cent

Buzz: But there have been square ups over the years and I heard you say on radio that there was a code word they use.

Hooper: That was years ago.

Buzz: How do you know it was years ago.

That ref grading system .Is so obviously flawed .
So the most disciplined team plays the worst Disciplined
Team an the penalties are not meant to be lopsided ?

Someone send an email to Brownie It's now a 5 meter gap
Headhighs are legel .Shoulder charges if you can't get a clear head shot
An as many hands in the ruck as you can .

The old saying with coaches about waiting to be fired shows its not a stable career. The best way to get job stability is to win a premiership. Second have your son as the star halfback.

If you wanted Ivan back here it would be a long time away. He'd need to fail pretty bad at the Panthers for them to move him on.

Some key points from the article. Can see Gould taming umbrage with the mess made during his era. The coaching swaps are on Gould and seem like personality clashes. The squad and systems in place Gould had a big part in creating.

Speaking exclusively to The Sydney Morning Herald, Fletcher explained that as is human nature, the side from the foot of the Blue Mountains had been far too reactive at the end of the 2015 season when Cleary was dumped in favour of Anthony Griffin.

“Everybody makes mistakes. We made a mistake by getting rid of him in the first place,” the Penrith boss said.
Though willing to admit the mistake, Fletcher also proved happy to pay credit to those that cleaned up the mess made during Phil Gould presiding era.

“At least we were smart enough under Dave’s [chairman Dave O’Neill] leadership, and Dave was the main instigator suggesting to the board that we get him back," he continued.

"It’s just magical. I’m sure we wouldn’t be in the position we are in today if it wasn’t for Ivan.

“Nobody was ever worried when we signed him. He knew what he was doing. He had a plan. He just had to assemble the right team and the right culture. That’s what he’s done.”

I think Gould can take some of the credit for the Panthers result and particularly the juniors coming through that have ‘set up’ this golden era. It all started many years ago.

What he could have done for our juniors without Covid messing up the plans!

Of course it was Gould who set the system in place. He doesn't seem to be getting much credit which may explain why he was on the Bunnies on Sunday night.
