Rugby League Nines to feature at 2019 Pacific Games

Rugby League Nines will once again feature at the 16th Pacific Games, which will take place in Nukuʻalofa in 2019.

Following the successful bid win, the Tonga Association of Sport and National Olympic Committee confirmed that Rugby League will be one of two optional sports for men offered at the tournament. The 2019 Pacific Games will feature 28 sports all up.

Rugby League Nines has been played at two previous Pacific Games, the first being in 2007 at Apia in Samoa, and the most recent in the 2015 Pacific Games at Port Moresby.

The 2007 tournament saw Fiji win the Gold Medal, with the Cook Islands and hosts Samoa collecting the other medals. Other participants in the 2007 Pacific Games included Tonga, Tokelau and Niue.

The 2015 tournament saw hosts Papua New Guinea win the Gold Medal, defeating Samoa in the final. Tonga finished third to collect Bronze. Other participants in the 2015 Pacific Games included Fiji, Cook Islands and the Solomon Islands.

The code is hoping to see an increase in the number of nations taking part in Rugby League Nines in the 2019 Pacific Games.

RLWC buildup

source: https://www.fijitimes.com/story.aspx?id=382802

THE Lions from England could be coming in to play one match with the Vodafone Fiji Bati before next year's Rugby League World Cup in Australia.

Fiji National Rugby League CEO Timoci Naleba confirmed the plan was to have the English side in Fiji, seven days before the Bati leave for Australia to be part of the RLWC.

"We have requested a game against them to serve as a pre-world cup match before we leave for Australia," Naleba said.

"Apart from the Lions, there are also plans to have international tours next year for the local players as a form of buildup towards the RLWC in October."

Naleba said local players currently on an off-season program would have another tour of Canada after the FNRL office received an invitation from the Canadian Rugby League. The team would also travel to Hawaii to be part of the Ohana Cup which they were a part of earlier this year and a tour to France to play against the French Rugby League team.

"These tours are for local players and if their fitness is up to the standard we want, which I'm sure the local boys will achieve," Naleba said.

"There are also talks to request the Australian A team for a game against them."

Naleba said they were now looking at players with a holistic approach to allow them to be represented at the RLWC which would encourage more upcoming local players.

The Vodafone Fiji Bati will face USA in their first game on October 28 in Townsville on November 5 against Wales and their last pool game would be against Italy.

FNRL announce tours for Residents team

Following the success of an expanded Representative program in 2016, the Fiji National Rugby League has confirmed that the Fiji Residents will take part in a series of representative tours in the lead up to this year’s World Cup.

The Fiji Residents is a representative side made up of the best players from Fiji National Rugby League competitions.

Fiji National Rugby League CEO Timoci Naleba confirmed the planned representative program in an interview with the Fiji Times.

“There are plans to have international tours next year for the local players as a form of buildup towards the RLWC in October” Naleba said.

Naleba said local players would have the opportunity to tour Canada after the FNRL office received an invitation from the Canadian Rugby League plus the FNRL already had commitments to tour France.

The Fiji Residents will also travel to Hawaii to again take part in the Ohana Cup.

“These tours are for local players and if their fitness is up to the standard we want, which I’m sure the local boys will achieve,” Naleba said.

“There are also talks to request the Australian A team for a game against them.”

Naleba said that the FNRL were now looking at players in a holistic approach to allow more domestic based players to have the opportunity to represent Fiji at the upcoming Rugby League World Cup.

The approach was designed to improve the standards of the domestic competitions, as well help the FNRL attract and retain players.

The Residents fixtures will be in addition to the confirmed ‘Battle of the Bati’ match.

Pretty impressive stuff from Fiji looks like they will have quite a few fixtures to help in their build up to the world cup. Games against Canada and France. Possible games against England and an Australian 'A' side. Plus the 'Battle of the Bati' locals vs overseas players. Also the mid year test against PNG. Fiji rugby league is going from strength to strength they have a competitive domestic competition, once they get a side admitted to NSW Cup I think they will become the clear cut number four ranked side in the World.

Turns out this tweet is incorrect. Its actually Fiji vs Tonga and Cook Islands vs PNG.

With the new eligibility rules, gonna be interesting to see the sides picked for Samoa, Tonga and Fiji especially being a World Cup year too.

Wonder if Bennett will allow Milford to play for Samoa against England, remembering he blocked Milford from plating for Samoa last year. Probably not, can't have Samoa beating Bennett's England side.
