A few things that I have been thinking about recently in response to the large amounts of spam threads that are cropping up on our site :
1. Have we been added to some sort of spam network?
2. Alot of this seems to happen when mods are not on the board, usually somewhere between the hours of 9am - 4pm. So do we have enough mods and if we do, do we have enough mods on at that the right time of the day ?
3. Is the signup process here enough to stop Bots ?
4. Are we banning the ips these posters are posting from ?

Indeed the spammer pick timings. Sadly not all us staff members can be here 24/7 to prevent it but we handle them when we are here.
As for the question if there are enough mods, well some would say we have too many.
Generally I'm one of the rare few that's here alot in a day; but I can only really get rid of the spam either in 'The Pub' or the 'Vodafone Warriors' threads that's about it.

I can get rid of the spam, regardless of where it is. However, I work 7:30am to midday. I usually get online by 12:30, although today was an exception. I generally roam the forums in the afternoons, and sometimes the evenings.

Admittedly, very few staff members are online in the early hours, but very few members in general are, either. Various spammers have come and gone - deleting their threads and accounts generally keeps them at bay, but I've no doubt that there is more that can be done.

Well look i dont want anybody taking these types of things personally (not saying anyone is but arguments have erupted on here over less).

I just feel that if there is more that can be done lets think about what it is and how it can be achieved.

Personaly I believe the mods do a pretty good job on here. There are a few things I personaly disagree with (thats a whole diff conversation) but I think that maybe there needs to be some additions of daytime regulars or abit of a review by the staff on preventative measures.

This spam is getting me rather frustrated at the moment to be frank. And in addition if i was a newbie jumping on the board I would probably think "oh great another forum bloody ravaged by spam" and not bother coming back.

It's a bad enough look when you pop on the site sometimes to see the 3 of the last 5 threads are wrestling related without having to see "Mutant d1cks" "Fun with Animals" and "Meat Curtains"

Thats my 2 cents.

2) spams are annoying...but there are more annoying things on a forum than that...
3) measures can be taken, and have no doubt jessbass and his team will be looking into it
4) i dont think a noob will look at spam threads and say to themselves ' im never gonna go there again...unless i want to get an enlargement recommendation...'.
5) i think you are making a big deal about not much mix ...infact i think u want to be on the mods....

Feel free to add suggestions here, guys. The staff are working on this, but your ideas may prove helpful.

2. Perhaps, but it is one of many annoying things
3. Possibly, Possibly not
4. Youd be surprised mate, I do it with many forums
5. I am not making a big deal of it, its f#cking buggin me. Mate I certainly am not asking to be a mod, its not on my wish list, but there are a couple of candidates who i feel could do a good job. But to be honest im not 100% certain if more mods is the definitive answer (or the silver bullet if you may)

It has been said that if you search the net all your threads are shown. This is because mostsearch engines use a "spider crawler" to search all sites. This in turn allows others to logon or post spam. The only way to stop this wholesale spamming is to filter out the "spider". This I would say from the spam I have seen is what is happening.

yeah pretty much could be bots or whatever just coming in and posting away. I think maybe looking at security could be one thing to stop the spam.

I make no effort to hide my ignorance with these sorts of things, Sinbad. How would we go about filtering the spider crawler? Is there software specifically designed for it?
