Recruitment NRL Rumoured Player Movements, Re-signings and Rumour Mill 2023-2024

Swanny

The top errors for Penrith were in 2022

1) Kikau 28 errors
2) Tago 25 errors
3) crichton 21 errors

So not the highest in the team but in the worst three offenders
Overall in the NRL ranked 43rd for most errors so in the "top" ten percent of the league for most errors
Was more referencing the “championship minutes” comment as being a bit harsh.
Interesting though that all of those players are on an edge. Probably shows that Penrith were willing to attack pretty freely

I thought that might have been the miscommunication but I was afraid to clarify.

I spent 16 years in North America so some of the phrases use come from their.
Championship minutes the way the phrase is used over there is not just for finals.
You have championship minutes in regular season games as well if that makes sense and it has been in regular season game championship minutes where I have seen him not perform.
You and the other fellow are quite right his intercept try and his world cup field goal were quite the opposite and were examples of clutching up.
After I saw the field goal in particular I had to have a long hard think about whether my theories on him were incorrect. In the end I decided more data was needed before overturned my hypothesis as that Samoan world cup team was a very special team formed by brother hood of the Samoan players. They were playing for pride of their families and I think it was easier for Stephen to clutch up at that moment than for a regular professional game of rugby league, His intercept try I didn;t rate in the context of the Panthers run to the finals as he had made other unforced errors at important moments in some of the earlier playoff matches.

Clutching up, error rates, ability to hold the crucial pass when it counts can be trained into you at practice with a good coach through specific drills. Most of the time it comes down to practice reps and sheer will power. And you can't teach will power which makes makes me wary of recruiting players with high error rates as I question their mental determination.
Has he turned a corner with that field goal? Probably, maybe. Perhaps. We will see.

Actually terrible stat for Crichton considering how many times he handles the ball compared to Kikau...

Crichton is a gun & any club getting him for under 900k is getting him on a good deal.
Since he's become a regular at Penrith he's tasted defeat just 8 times out of 71 so I can't buy into the theme that he's poor in the championship minutes. Big match winning moments for both them & Samoa show the opposite.
When considering errors, on averages, he ranked 108th last year amongst all players in the competition, 95th for backs & 30th for Centres. Also according to FoxSports he had 18 possessions per game in 2022 which is 4 more than Kikau.
The bloke kicked goals at 82% last year too.

Looks like big Marty Taupau to the Broncos for this year.
Kinda surprising if true. Is this the start of the rush for the silly season, maybe we see Broncos let old mate go to Titans a year early, which triggers some more movement of front rowers

That is a surprise, it sounded a sure thing he was going to the eels. Could be a heap of transfers to multiple clubs coming.

Comparing apple’s and oranges there-
21 errors over a season isn’t bad esp for an outside back- doesn’t even put him in the top 50.
28 errors for kikau is shocking though- worst in the comp for a forward.

We all need to shift our salary workings.

With the cap rising by 22% in 2023, a $830k player next year is only the equivalent of a $680k salary last year.
Yeah agree.
I recall he wants to play fullback so $830k seems pretty reasonable for a guy like Cricton at FB.... who can also kick goals

Sharks are shrewd, sounds like Lachie Miller to the knights on a 3 year deal for under 19 prop Max Bradbury. Second or third string fullback for one of the knights best up and comers. Trades are becoming much more prominent.
One team I would never release a player too under any circumstances unless we get a player twice as good in return.
They play hard ball which is fine but I hope every other team and ourselves make them jump through hoops for releases.

Pretty handy list of players in the top 50 of the error count list.

I’d rather game breakers with an error in them than plodders who hold it like an NFL running back.

Pretty sure there isn’t any correlation between team error counts and winning over the course of a season anyway, the key is defending your errors.in
Agreed. If we gonna talk about Championship minutes you’d have to include clutch intercepts which I can think of 2-3 that turned games including grand finals and a World Cup semi final.
