Pearce to the Knights has got me pretty keen to see how Newcastle go.
I'm finding their rebuild exciting. I see them being around 10th-12th on the ladder in 2018 and possibly in the finals the following year.

Hasn't worked for the Warriors

lol that's probably because we've never tried it

this entire time we've been a development club, even now 21 of our 39 man squad is made up of home-grown talent... and that doesn't even include the 7 players who were developed by us but moved to other clubs before coming back again

imo if the warriors adopted a recruitment strategy like that of the roosters we'd be a top 8 side no worries and a top 4 side frequently

Recruiting big names like Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Luke and Foran didn't make a lick of difference.

I doubt Cam Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk could fix this rabble we're stuck with. I rekon one big clean out would set us straight (so long as we had a solid coach to go with it).

It would be hard for any club to adopt a recruitment strategy like the roosters, (apart from the broncos and storm) as

a) They have always generally been a very successful club, that makes them a attractive option as at the end of the day, ALL players want to win premierships, and the roosters, broncos and storm are clubs that is always there or there abouts come the business end of the season, we unfortunately are not. That hurts our recruitment.

And

b) Roosters and Broncos can afford to rely on TPA's to help boost the players salaries, and add a bit of extra incentive as they have very business "savy" people within the club, and use all those to thier advantage, whether fair or not...

Now I cant say I know too much about our TPA's,maybe we have a similar set up being a one country club, and my assumptions are completely wrong!! Haha

Yeah I don't know a lot about tpa's either but with our situation you'd think we'd be at least a little more well off than most clubs, that's if the team's facilities, jersey marketing and media promotion costs are anything to go by.

Destination would also be an issue but I think 2-3 seasons in auckland wouldn't be a big hurdle if a player knew he had a high chance of playing top 4/GF footy and improving/promoting himself into rep honours while he was there.

Obviously we need to build a winning reputation first, I think swapping out our under-achievers for average players would be a good place to start (could very well include the coach).

No they haven't, they had a bloody long drought after the Jack Gibson era.
Recent history they have done well. Weird club in that they have a good stab, clear out, get the spoon then get up there again. Great recruiters and know when to clear the dead weight. Except for SKD. Dont know why they held onto him for another round after their last Premiership...

Yea but our drought is still ongoing....... 22 years and counting....
good point that, a drought indicates you have had something in the past but have now without for an extended period of time.

So we are not really in a drought are we!

We are what I would call Grand Final Winner virgins...we've come close a few times, but just not found the final thrust to break that duck!

In our short history we have had periods at the top of the comp where we've made a reputation for ourselves as a formidable club, but have never overcome our Achilles heel - mental frailty. We're at the bottom of a huge crash & burn but I see better times ahead. We now have the bones of a top 4 squad assembled in the short time SK's had, and I fully expect another shot at a premiership in a year or two. Wouldn't be surprised if Shaun Johnson scores the winning try against the Knights in that GF.

For all the money and influence Nick Politis has used they haven't been that successful, especially compared with Melbourne and Brisbane.

For the record they didn't win anything between WWII and 1974, and then again in 1975. Then nothing until 2002 and then again in 2013.

Good points raised, but apart from the odd bad year, they are always competitive....something we cannot claim to be.

Had to laugh at Politis saying they manage their salary cap better than other clubs. If he didn't need to pretend they were complying he would need to do the hand signals to put the speech marks around "manage" and give a wink.

According to him they don't use TPA's well much............yeah right.

After signing Tedesco and Cronk they have enough for someone else especially now after Nikorima has gone cause he was on $400k. Even says Cronk was paid for pretty much as Pearce decided to move, but at one stage they could have afforded both of them. He sounds like a politician before and after an election.

It will be interesting to see how much pressures goes on Souths to release Crighton and if they stick to their guns and make him play out his contract. Releasing him they would ideally need a replacement.
