General NRL General Manager Game - Wheel and Deal to the best team

I think with the pool C players (tino for example) the club who has already signed them (titans in this case) should get the opportunity to either honor that deal (with a value that Moses agrees to which will then come off their cap) or they can renege in which case the player goes back into pool A with the rest of the uncontracted players.
Probably pay to get the pool C players out of the way before the comp starts proper so there’s less confusion.
That way you’re either a pool A player who is uncontracted and u can make an offer on or a pool B who is contracted but can be traded for.
Interesting idea of dealing with Pool C players in advance.
What's everyone's view on the Storm being allowed to make a counter offer to keep Tino.

An argument in favour of it is that in Pool A - the incumbent team can counter offer to keep and re-sign their guy.

An argument against is that I would feel aggrieved if I were the titans.

I feel storm should have some mitigation but I don't know what? Thoughts...I mean could the Isaac Moses pick a slightly lesser but comparable player from the Titans roster as compensation. In the NHL that is exactly what happens in some cases.

Edit or the Titans could have to pay the storm $'s compensation.

Just trying to understand.

Storm has a 30 man squad now. Less Tino who has already signed with the Titans. They therefore have a 29 man squad to start the game but the same salary cap to spend.

The Titans have a 30 man squad but have signed Tino. They therefore have 31 players to start our game (2 more than the storm) but the same cap figure.

The Titans would have more assets and a valuable squad to start the game due to extra players at the start with still an equal cap? The Titans can effectively sell 2 players for half a million, now have an equal size squad to the Storm and start with that significant financial advantage.

Josh Ado-Carr is a similar situation and there will be other teams the same situation having more or less players to start.

Is this how it works or am I looking at it wrong?

Maybe I will just play the game and see how it all unfolds
1) "The Titans can effectively sell 2 players for half a million, now have an equal size squad to the Storm and start with that significant financial advantage."

No they can't sell two players for half a million. You can only get people of your roster by
a) If they are Pool A and someone signs them up and recruits them. There is no impact to your cap in this case. There would be in real life - but not in this game.
b) If they are Pool B and someone trades 3 of your guys for two of theirs so you end up with one spot less. As explained already all trades confirmed as fair trades will have no impact on caps and available funds even if there is an uneven number of dudes floating in each direction.
c) You get Isaac Moses to agree to sign your player up to a club in the super league. You get no cap relief for this in the game - instead you just free up a thirty man roster spot. Which could be a valuable thing worth doing.
d) You use some of your salary cap to compensate some other team to take a player from your roster on to theirs sort of like how the bulldogs would have to subsidise Foran to get someone to take him in real life. Again you might want to do this to free up a top thirty spot.

2) "The Titans have a 30 man squad but have signed Tino. They therefore have 31 players to start our game (2 more than the storm) but the same cap figure."

Your beginning position is the 17 players who took the field in round one 2020. I will provide a link for this and all teams on opening day will need to post
a) their game day 17 based on who actually was named
b) their top 30 based on the link I provded

At the end of the game you post your new and improved best 17 dudes who aren't on the injury list as of 4 weeks from now (I also provided this link)

There are two prizes

1) Who has the best 17 at the end in absolute terms
2) Whose 17 has improved the most compared to their original 17

The 30 man squad is only relevant in that your 17 must come from it.
We will use a simple version of a 30 man list in this game as I know it gets complex in the NRL.
Your list will the official 30 guys on the url I gave at day one plus any additons or deletions. Last guys added go to the bottom of the pile and become the 31st or 32nd guy etc and can't be part of your top 30 or your potential 17 unless you get rid off some of the incumbents on the list.

Boy the rules for this will be long!

Mr Brownstone

wrighty have you seen this game or similar work before? Have to admit I’m struggling a bit to work out how it all comes together, particularly given there will be big mismatches between clubs in the number of players coming off contract at the end of this season, discretion of one individual in the Isaac Moses role, requirement for 16 teams, etc.

I have played a version like it twice on a cricket forum. That version was more simple though just with trades. I am confident it will all work.
Just need to iron out a few issues with Pool C. Nearly there. Keep the faith. It will make sense once you start playing and appear a lot more simple than it all sounds for me to describe in writing.
I originally got the concept from a Vancouver Canucks NHL forum. They play general manager all the time. I then took it to my cricket forum and played it there. It gets really interesting to see trades work and what a player is worth in terms of trade value.

You will love it. Bear with while the final few rules are debated.

Sorry just noticed the comment about mismatches between teams with guys coming off contract. Pick your team carefully and although it won't be even between the teams there will be swings and round abouts if you are familiar with that expression.

Oh and last thing - and sorry for three posts mr Brownstone. We have ten teams signed up now, you will only be able to trade with teams that have a general manager. Hopefully we end up with 12 or 13 contestants.

Another unresolved issue is lets say St George doesn't get taken. Can we have open season bidding on their free agents just thinking that through. Certainly you couldn't trade with St George though.
Hence at the start I said we needed as many contestants as possible for this game.

We have the minimum number of contestants now with ten.
Next need an Isaac Moses volunteer and a bonus would be another two general managers.

I think a fair outcome for the clubs losing a pool C player would be to get what they are currently paying that player added to their available cap- guesstimating $200,000 to the storm for tino? (Issac mosses could set the figure).
Wouldn’t be many pool C players anyway would there?

OK I like that rule let's go with that. I like it for a number of reasons.

I think Tino signed for 700K with the Titans in 2021 but is currently on maybe $200K tops.
Titans would forgo $700K of their salary cap to acquire him early.
Storm would get $200K added to their war chest.,

This is what you meant right Defence ...it seems a good solution.

Thanks for understanding this complex issue!

I like the idea of any leftover teams (Dragons for example) player rosters being thrown into a draft perhaps and the GM’s all get to pick in reverse order of where their team finished 2019. Alternatively run an auction for each player, IPL style, and the player goes to the highest bidder. Possibly prefer the second option come to think of it.

Noted. I will have a think about it. My knee jerk reaction is it might make it too easy to acquire players and get a good team.

On the other hand I have the warriors and we have 6 or 7 off contract dudes In need to resign or replace with acquistions.

Glad you are getting into the swing of it Mr Brownstone and thinking of ideas. Cheers.

In a perfect world yes but might be better off keeping it simple- if u lose a player tough luck- if u want to keep them then re-sign them with the cap that your clubs been allocated.
Cant really have that allocated cap plus more money for players who leave- it would distort the market.- there would be more money than players and we’d end up paying big overs.
It’s one or the other and I quite like your idea of lower finishing clubs having more money to spend- makes it more interesting.
Just my opinion....

Can some players manage 2 teams (not me) with the rule they cannot trade with themselves.

I’m sure we have some potential Fale’s out there that are up to it.

Could be a way to bump up numbers?

wrighty needed to sell it better...

“Ok, we’re playing a managers game. We swap players. Pick your team cu**s. I will tell you the rules when a situation demands it...”

Im sure it will all come together once we start

Thanks for doing this Dave. Wrighty did ask me but I think you’d be far less open to being bribed than I would.
