Its all shits n giggles when they do it. But when its us, they make sure to put the kibosh on that quick.

Thanks for that I was going to go hunting for that.

The game played out the way that most of us thought it would but the outcome became more certain once the back line changed to include 3 of the biggest, slowest, gumbiest and in one case, oldest backs in the comp up against an Eels back line full of speed merchants.

All our backs should be speed tested next year and any that aren't running 100 metres under 12 seconds should be out. No other NRL team would tolerate backs that are as slow as ours.

But we got a hooker that burned off the Eels best. Maybe we should play him on the wing. Oh wait, we have. lol

I know the rule because I have seen it used properly by officials that actually know about the game they are controlling. First time I came across it was on an attacking team getting a try disallowed. What happened was an attacking player ran through on the chance of an offload and stayed offside when the player he was supporting was tackled and played the ball, the dummy half beat the markers, made a break and then passed the ball to the player that had run through the tackle before, who then went on to score. Result try disallowed and penalty to defending side as a out of play player can not be run onside. Pettybourne was the defensive version of that.

What a strange game.

After 7 or 8 minutes we're 12 - 0 up, and in the best possible way - two tries scored from the sort of pre-planned attacking plays we've been short of all season.

And then it fell apart, rest of game is 40 - 6 to the Eels, with the margin boosted by some handling errors when we had the Eels' line at our mercy. Have to make some allowance for the bad weather - don't know what it looked like on the telly, but it was raining pretty much all the time, and heavily on occasions. Good to see 11,100 diehards turned up at Mt Smart despite the bad weather - I was prepared for a very small crowd, but it held up well considering the downpour and the dead rubber game. Maybe lots of dads got tickets as Fathers' Day prezzies...

Our porous defence on the edges didn't help, and we missed Solomone Kata, but the result was not all down to our own faults, though: that Eels outfit is a class act, especially the back line, with some serious pace. They'll be a handful next year, and would have been serious contenders this year but for the pay cap rort and the points disallowed.

Sad way for Thomas Leuluai to go out, who was getting stronger and stronger as the season wound up. Full marks yet again to Simon Mannering.

And so to 2017. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck back, an off-season hire of some snarling line-bending brute of a prop, Shaun fully fit - who knows?

Shout out to everybody that made it all the way through the season. I haven't watched anything since halftime when the Rabbitohs flogged us.

Another season done and dusted. Sounds like Lolohea had another absolutely miserable game at fullback and Vatuvei needs to be pissed off ASAP. I'll let those of you that watched lead the angry mob. I'll be somewhere in the back sharpening my pitchfork and checking my phone.

Four seasons in one day. We are like 4 different performances in one game.

The Eels after being stripped of their points could have dropped their lip and just turned up. They still played like they had something to play for. Our patchy performance helped.

A performance that really summed up our season. All over the shop. Started well, fell away, steading for a bit, fell away, etc.

Their first two tries also sum us up.
  1. A rainy day, slippery surface and how do we carry the ball? Pretty loosely like there is no way it will slip out. Lack of ball control and not playing to the conditions.
  2. A few years ago we got a push over try against the Eels. So seeing as it was a tactic we have used we should be aware that a side could do it. The Eels got some nice revenge on that one.
