Jami-Lee Ross raises issues of foreign interference at select committee
11 Apr, 2019

Former National MP Jami-Lee Ross has used a briefing to MPs by spy agencies to imply the Chinese community sought to have a Chinese minister installed in a future government during an event attended by Simon Bridges.

Government Communications Security Bureau director-general Andrew Hampton and Security Intelligence Service director-general Rebecca Kitteridge appeared before the justice select committee this morning to speak during its inquiry into the 2017 general election.

Such an inquiry is usual following an election. The focus of the inquiry this time is on foreign influence on elections.

Ross asked Kitteridge whether the SIS had ever raised concerns in briefings to ministers or the leader of the opposition over "specific individuals" posing a threat to New Zealand's interests in an election or political environment.

"You're asking a kind of hypothetical question, but what I can say is that in this area we've provided briefings, as we're required to do, to both ministers and the leader of the opposition across this area of concern," Kitteridge responded.

Ross then asked if the leader of the opposition (Simon Bridges) was basing comments he made on May 14 last year following an event where discussions centred on a desire by the Chinese community to have a Member of Parliament appointed as a minister in a future government on intelligence he received.

"He said to me 'I can't do it because basically the spooks are telling me he's a Chinese spy'," Ross said.

Kitteridge said she didn't comment on intelligence provided.

A spokeswoman for Bridges today declined to comment on Ross' claim.

bruce bruce while you may be a National voter there is no need to promote fake news. Please provide a link to the above statement
It’s not fake news, there was an article today in the Herald related to this where the author of the upper north island supply chain study was quoted calling Twyford an idiot. In saying that, anyone suggesting Northport as the best short to medium term option to shift Auckland port volume to is just as stupid.

It looks to me as though the Marsden Point rail link is an expensive option so Auckland have sold Manukau to Twyford knowing they can't get it to work and the council can still make money from the Auckland Port. I cannot see any insurance company covering a ship coming through the Manukau Heads

Wasn't the Northland port a Winnie objective?
Makes sense it would be on the table as part of forming the coalition government.
It's good they got a report done instead! haha :)
Northland is the best option but very expensive. The Auckland Council and those who profit from the Auckland port want the status quo, so suggesting Manukau is their idea. Bloody laughable.

Maybe they should do a third "independent"' report on the tax payer as a tie breaker! haha

Northland only becomes the best option once Tauranga is at capacity - and they’re only just over a third of the way there at 1.2m TEU containers.

Yes Nationals CCP links will loose the election for them
Lots of anti-China feeling out in the public at the moment what with Hong Kong & Covid 19

National’s deep links to the CCP are going to be exposed in court eventually, all with cute little SFO diagrams that show the flood of money originating out of CCP connected accounts through to the National Party’s coffers, where it all still rests. And its been resting there for a good long time.

Interestingly, that article is written by Cameron Slater (I don't think you could get a more apt last name). How the worm has turned.

Bear in mind that Onehunga was once the major port of Auckland. Only got shifted to the Waitemata side due to the majority of the local sea traffic in NZ coming from the East Coast ala Whakatane, Tauranga, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. For shipping coming internationally and especially Australia back in the day, the West coast was a much quicker and cheaper option.

Muller has missed an opportunity here.
He should have offered Walker two options, either resign or be sacked.
Now the National leadership look like hypocrites for grandstanding over Ardern for not sacking Clark.

Or the fact both Woodhouse and Muller were giving it to the Govt for letting the leak happen. When in actual fact, one of their insiders in a privileged position has used her authority to leak the goods. What a shambles.

Sorry just jumping on post as it was the last one on this topic.

Wayne Brown, head of UNISCS, criticised the council’s continued lobbying for an assessment of Manukau Harbour and Firth of Thames as their report found that Manukau has unfavourable entry conditions – pushing maritime insurers to decide that they “would not support any ongoing large container shipping through that harbour.”

“One phone call to the marine insurance industry and they won’t even think about insuring any boats coming in there. We’re looking at what is best for the upper North Island, not necessarily what is the best for Auckland,” he said.

Don't think it would ever happen, the cost to continually dredge that harbour to a safe spec not really viable.
