Titans hooker Friend signs with Vodafone Warriors
Highly-rated Gold Coast hooker Nathan Friend will link up with the Vodafone Warriors next season on a two-year contract with an option for 2014.

The Toowoomba-born Friend, who was close to playing for Queensland in last year’s State of Origin, has amassed a club record 97 appearances for the Titans since their debut season in the NRL in 2007.
After starting his NRL career with the Brisbane Broncos, he spent four seasons with the Melbourne Storm as back-up to Cameron Smith, playing in the 2006 grand final before joining Gold Coast.
Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Dean Bell said the signing represented a significant breakthrough for the Vodafone Warriors.
“We’re really pleased to be able to secure a player of the highest quality in such a key position,” he said.
“It’s not often anyone rated as one of the best in a specialist role becomes available on the market. Such players are usually well tied up, so for us to get someone as talented as Nathan is a real achievement.”
Friend made his NRL debut with the Broncos in 2002 before joining the Storm where he added a further 34 appearances before becoming one of the Titans’ foundation players.
“I’ve had a great time with the Titans. They gave me the chance to establish myself at first-grade level and I appreciate what they’ve done for me,” he said.
“While my focus is on doing well for them for the rest of this season, I’m also pleased to have my future sorted out for next year and beyond. It’s an important contract not just for me but also my family.”
Named the Titans’ 2009 player of the year, Friend’s a skilful playmaker out of dummy half – as he has proved against the Vodafone Warriors in the past – and is also renowned as one of the NRL’s leading defenders. In last Friday night’s clash against North Queensland, his first outing of the season, he made a game-high 57. Last season he totalled 1120 tackles (the most of all players), 1067 in 2009, 910 in 2008 and 783 in 2007.
Regarded as one of the game’s most durable players, he made 56 consecutive appearances for the Titans to the end of last season.
Friend is a qualified personal trainer and also a bricklayer by trade.

I'm going to give him a buzz and see if he wants to be my personal trainer.

Whatever!

When I'm making 57 tackles a game and out-running Usain Bolt you'll think again..
Pfftt. Having a personal trainer is bad enough (unless, of course, you're a professional athlete), let alone a man-on-man personal trainer. He gonna help you stretch those hammy's, yeah?

Naked saunas...

On topic. Great news! I'm stoked with this signing. I know some people are going to be annoyed by this, but to those people I will say this: Actually go watch the Titans play next weekend, rather than just seeing he makes 50 tackles a game and assuming he is nothing but a defensive player.

Well, with respect to the Warriors hooker depth, Heremaia, Berrigan, Mara and Hohaia are all off contract at the end of the year (all have club actionable options, apart from Berrigan, whose option is automatic based on whether he plays 20 first grade games this season). I reckon we'll see the arse end of at least two of those guys. My tip is that it will be Hohaia and Heremaia, with Mara to deputise under Friend and Berrigan to be an awesome fekkin' player to have in the bank in case of injuries.

Yeah Luck will be especially pissed off, Nathan will cut into his tackle stats. Jks

Yeah good signing. We need the steady, experienced Aussie guys in the mix still. He is very good out of dummy half, especially from an option taking/organisation POV. Whoever is in the halves will benefit.

I think Berrigan is surplus to requirements. I'd keep/cut Hohaia depending what Locke is up to.

I actually quite like Berrigan. He hasn't done anything spectacular, but seems to have a cool head on his shoulders.

So do I. I rate him too. However, I think Friend would be a step up in the same direction, hence no need for him.

I reckon this is great signing!! 2 years with an option for a guy his age is a good amount of time. He's in the top 5 hookers in the game, our young halves will be way better off for it. And, Heremaia will have to go, which I think is an upgrade x6. Looking forward too..

1. Fish

6. Johnson
7. Maloney

9. Friend

14. Mara/Berrigan

Now we just need a centre and we'll be going well for next season

it would not make financial sense to let hohaia go as i believe next year will be his 10th year at the club and as such qualifies for some of his salary to be salary cap exempt (100k i think).

nathan friend is a great signing for the club...the greatest thing i like about him is that desire to win, and never giving up....watch titans opponents make long breaks...the player in cover will always be friend from wherever he ran back from. im suprised his is 30 but as noted he is a health freak and i have no doubt that his 3 years here will be very valuable.

now to get a decent commanding halfback...

Im very happy with this signing. Always rated him, finally Lord we can have some direction and class coming out of number 9.
Now we just need a half back to steer the team around, I hope Johnson is ready by next year but man he seems to be injured an awful lot..
Heremia is most at risk here, but Hohaia neck is on the chopping block too, he is really going to have to perform. Maybe Seymore too is under pressure?
