Why is it his fault?
He provided the NRL with all of the necessary documentation and THEY made the decision, not HIM !!!

I have maintained that the only thing I think Fien was guilty of was ignorance. This article seems to confirm it for me, as he gave all the necessary documentation, and told the NZRL that his great-grandmother was born in New Zealand. The NZRL clearly told him that was enough to qualify, so he can hardly be blamed.

He, like us, foolishly expected the NZRL to be capable of doing the job they were paid to do.

Fien isn't stupid. He knew full well what was happening. He's done enough damage already, and don't say he "didn't know" or was "deceived", a 12-year old would have been able to figure it out.

Fien is a liar, and he made a mockery of the tournament. Of course the NZRL had a big part to play, but I doubt Fien is that incredibly stupid. Besides, he's not even remotely a Kiwi. If there is any in there it's so small it wouldn't even count.

An idea - play a KIWI in the KIWI team, and don't let a fool who played a part in ruining this eyar's competition back in.

Gosh you can't help but feel sorry for the guy!!

Listening to the interview he did on radiosport a couple of days before he made his Kiwis debut. Man, that was a pretty cool interview tbh, and put any doubt I had aside about him being committed to NZ, esp when asked next year if Ricky Stuart asked him to play for Australia, and he hadnt played for NZ, he was like "I'd tell Ricky where to shove it" :lol:

I don't think God's sake is even remotely related to this debate, but I defend Nathan Fien because I think he was largely unaware of the situation. The NZRL have also come out and backed up this view in an official manner.

Of course he doesn't. I never said that. Only Selwyn Bennett has said that, and it's a rediculous view to hold. I'm saying that Fien made it clear to the NZRL that it was his great-grandmother who was born in Wanganui, and not his grandmother, and that the NZRL said that was fine, and that he was still eligible.

The damage caused to the game can be laid squarely at the feet of the NZRL. This is like blaming Steve Price for the Warriors' salary cap scandal. He isn't privy to all the information - his employers tell him what the situation is, and he has to take them at his word. His responsibility is what he does at training and on the field, not the rules and regulations of international football.

The precedent has been set with Brent Webb. Fien as 1/8 Kiwi, whereas Brent Webb has no Kiwi blood in him whatsoever.

It's a reference to the Watergate scandal that ended up with the resignation of American President Richard Nixon in 1974. That scandal was called Watergate, because it involved a burglary that occurred in the Watergate Hotel in Washington.

Since then, scandals have often had the term 'gate' added on the end for effect. So there was Corngate in New Zealand not too long ago - another political scandal - and now we have Grannygate.

I'm sure there have been dozens of variants over the years.
